Subject: Win7 64bit and Poser

pappy411 ( ) posted Thu, 12 November 2009 at 10:07 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 10:27 AM

Is anyone running Windows 7 64bit and able to install and run either Poser 5-6-7-or 8 on the 64bit version?

I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 (64 bit) and Poser 8 runs fine without having to set the compatibility to WinXP.  I just checked the Windows 7 compatibility website and searched for Poser.  It lists that Poser 8 will run, which it does for me, but they are working with Smith Micro on Poser 7.  I didn't try P7, but thought about installing it until I saw that it supposedly isn't compatible.

The W7 website didn't mention P5 or 6.

Thanks whbos.  That sounds promising.

Posers 5,6,7 and Pro all running no problems at all here, out of the box.... tho not installed on the Program Files or Program Files(86) Folders.

no adjustments made to their compatibility modes at all.

I really don't understand what the difference is between 32 and 64 bit other than you can run with more memory in 64 bit than you can in 32 bit.

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Fri, 13 November 2009 at 2:55 AM

64bit can support more processors with more cores than 32bit as well as the extra memory. Also from what I've seen myself in the last week or so the 64bit version of 7 is more stable than the 32bit version.

The only setting I changed for Poser was to have it always run with Administrator access, it's even installed to the Program Files folder, I know I probably shouldn't but I wanted to prove to myself that it can be done.

I'm running 64bit Windows 7 Pro (6gb ram, quad core i7, 1gb dedicated graphics physics memory) with Poser 7, and have found that I can't import/export anything. No other bugs, just can't import/export. Weird...

Renders like lightning tho!

project nemesis I can't seem to find it right now, but I saw a thread somewhere in the last couple of days that mentioned a problem with certain programs not being able to see files in Windows 7, it had something to do with them being exported to a special folder & only being visible when you click on a "compatability files button" in explorer, sorry if that doesn't make much sense I'm typing this from memory & don't have the original thread in front of me.

Shot in the dark here, but how did you new Windows 7 people install Poser?  Cuz I reinstalled Poser Pro after installing Win 7, and now renders take 4x longer in the Render Queue than on Vista.  Multiple threads is set at 4, "Separate Processes" checked, but still nothing.  I moved my Runtime folder to the other HD during install, then just moved it back into Poser after I reinstalled everything.  PP is installed to Program Files (x86)...am I missing something?

hborre ( ) posted Thu, 03 December 2009 at 3:27 PM

As posted in other threads before, unless you have given yourself proper authorization or turn off UAC, you may encounter problems with Poser residing in the Program Files folder under Vista or Window 7.  Best solutions, so far, be the sole Administrator, turn off UAC, or relocate your Poser to your primary drive.  No reinstallation is necessary if you move the app and content.

Silke ( ) posted Thu, 03 December 2009 at 4:41 PM

I put Poser on a different drive (I don't install any apps to the OS partition) and it works just fine.
Runtimes are on yet another drive, since I frequently have to move the darn thing to a bigger one lol.

Win7 64bit is much (MUCH) faster for me than my old Vista 32 bit Ultimate, and P8 works a treat.
Renders real quick, too, even with IDL on.
Of course, it helps to have oodles of RAM and I run 2 1gb NVidia cards slaved together...

Man...UAC's still here?  I thought they got rid of all that nonsense with Windows 7...  Ok I'll give that a try.

Aanascent ( ) posted Thu, 03 December 2009 at 6:27 PM

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and have both Poser 6 and 8 installed.  Both run without incident.

I may have set up Poser 6 to run in compatibility mode to be on the safe side, but don't remember offhand.

Installing anything into the program files folders in Vista & 7 can cause problems, especially if you have UAC running or if you fail to run the installer with admin rights.

I have found that switching off UAC (although potentially dangerous to the system) takes away most of the problems, I haven't had to run any of the Posers in compatibility mode either, but that might just be luck on my part.

My first attempt at installing into Program Files with UAC running caused the entire system to grind to a halt needing the power to be switched off to get it running again, so don't do it. ;)

I've had no problems installing Poser 8 in the Program Files folder, but the RUNTIME is installed in the Public Documents folder as suggested for Vista installs with UAC active.

Comparing Win 7 x64 to Vista x64? Seems miles quicker. Everything seems to come up much more spritely than Vista, Poser included.

My current machine started life with Vista 32 & it was a pain in the rump to get anything done, I swapped to Windows 7 x64 & even with only 2Gb of ram it's a much better behaved animal. :D

Didn't think Poser took any advantage of SLI...?

(Yet. there is provision for using GPU's for extra calculation capability in DX11 and above, but poser certainly does not use this at this time. )

I finally installed Poser 7 in Win7 64-bit and no problems at all.

Yep. Meant to put a smiley after my question mark...

Slight problem after finishing animation (to AVI) and Poser trying to open Media Player.  Able to fix by downloading amovie.ocx (older ActiveX component) and placing it in the C:WindowsSystem -- NOT System32 -- folder.

Poser 6 and Poser 7 working fine on Intel Duo P8700, Win 7 Ultimate 64

I did install both version to the root directory, C:Poser 6 etc, and DID turn UAC completely off.

I've tried to get used to UAC, and maybe I'll try again, but for now it's just a pain.

Best Wishes,
Rªnce

I bought a new 64 bit PC this week running Windows 7. First programs I installed Photoshop and Poser 8 without problems. Poser 8 worked right off the mark and no problems yet.
