Subject: Can this be done with Carrara?

Ravi_s ( ) posted Sat, 05 December 2009 at 7:58 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 6:49 AM

This is a bit of an odd question but is it actually possible to model something that accurately mimics the physical object?
Let me explain!
I'd like to model a paper bag but I'd like to to behave like a real bag with specific reference to deforming. In a real bag, if you pull the open end apart, the edges towards the top will get closer together. If I put a large object into the bag, the edges will crease inwards.
Is it possible in any 3D prod (including Carrara) to create non-strechable material or mesh to accurately simulate the behaviour and subsequent deformation of a non-stretchable object surface?
In other words, is it possible to deform the mesh and NOT stretch the surface but to deform it.

I hope I've made myself clear!!

You can create a bone rig for this, its the best way since Carrara dont have softbody animation.

I can't even begin toimagine how this can be done! are there any tutorials etc?

Also, this is not for anaimation - I just need to know if it's possible to deform naturally for objects that dont have stretchable skin eg, adding realistic creases to a bag with a label on it, for example, without stretching the label when deforming.

I don't know if this answers your question, but you can create a paper bag in Carrara and in the Vertex Room, using soft sellection, manipulate it.

Thanks Brian
This is how I created the bag but if you pull and push the surface as in your pic above, all you are doing is stretching the surface. If you pull the surface using soft select (as you've shown) the edges of the bag are not pulled inwards because I cant make Carrara understand that the surface is not stretchable!
If you have a label mapped to the surface,, every time you distort the surface, you stretch the label and this can be seen clearly in the text and pics on the label.

I just wondered if I could crease the surface realistically and NOT stretch it!

Check out the potentials for using the many Modifiers in the Carrara 7 User Guide perhaps. Brian

Ah well, I guess Carrara can't do it...

Hi Ravi, what you want to do no 3D software can do. When modeling its up to the modeler that need to keep the mesh like he imagine. The only way to do what you want without modeling is creating a flat bag and add softbody in animation. Theres a free plugin from SparrowHawk that cna do this in Carrara, but when modeling you need to keep what you want when pushing and pulling polygons, other control her ein the modeler side is about UV maps, they control how the texture look and is applyed to the mesh too.
Look a lot of models here in RO, no one use softbody to create, just control everything by hand. I think that the frst thing you need to do is find a reference, so you can model what you really want, dont try to do only by mind until you are a expert in model.

OK, I understand that!
So what would you say that the best way to add a label to a surface and then add creases and dents etc without stretching the label?
Is it just not possible at all, because every time I've tried this, all I do is to distort the mesh and therefore distort the label!!
As for Softbody, I thought that was just for animation (which I have no interest in!)

Are UV maps not affected by the underlying mesh? I always thought they were, but I could be wrong, of course!!

Everytime you change, strech, move the mesh the coordenates points in UV will change. So what you need to do is: model the basic mesh first, UV the mesh, model the distortion in mesh, them adjust the UVMap again. This is the only way to do what you want...and is what everyone do too. Do you have some reference??

yup, I have the manuals. I just need to read some more to understand how to do it but it really hard to understand!
UV mapping is just sooo confusing!!

Yes UVmap is a really strange thing... you need to imagine your mesh this way: think that your object is the prey, you will need to cut and stretch its skin! There are some softwares only for this but for a simple bag you can easily do in Carrara.

There is a crease edge command which can help keep edges sharp when smoothing. You might also want to play with magnets. Only a very sophisticated simulation could account for all the variables you are describing for both materials and physics. If you put a label like a decal on a bag, shouldn't get messed up too bad. Actual uv mapping is more accurate for most things tho compared to trying to use a projection. However, if you post a pic I think you can get more specific help to what specific issues you maybe having.

No need to think outside the box....

doing what ravi wants (applying an undistorted label map to a morphed, wrinkled paper surface) is easy in poser anyway.  just morph and wrinkle it as desired, then load as background image the label in question and line up the bag surface so that the label is correctly aligned with respect to the bag in front of it.  then "create perspective UVs", which changes the bag's mapping to match the label.  in other apps it's called "camera mapping".  i dunno how to do it in carrara, but it must be at least as easy as poser.

But paper is different from cloth. Bags, sacks, I guess could be considered cloth.  Depends on if you drink soft drinks or pop.  East coast thing.

Its a softbody plugin, you can simulate cloth, paper, rubber, flesh and other softbody.

A paper bag has a spring behavior along its folded edges.  I'll look for some sample movies on the site for paper.

There may be some solutions with the free Sparowhawke Cloth plugin?

Play in the free version of QuickTime.

You CAN access (Copy/paste) the YouTube files imediately after you play them from your "Temp Internet Files" folder.

Thanks guys.

bwtr I cannot find my temp internet folder.  I have looked everywhere in the Windows and Windows System folders for it.

GKDantas,  I ended up using the file converter to convert to avi after it was downloaded and that worked this time, although I could not get it to work earlier.
