COPY a tree 500 times into your scene and you will have 500 individual trees in your scene, which may make your computer ram will most likely start smoking, and your scenefile size could become massive, making it take forever to load back up, or not at all, getting the  "Bryce out of memory" error (if you can even save the scenefile in the first place)

INSTANCE 5,000 trees into your scene, and Bryce will "see" only ONE tree, but not only remembers the placement of the other 4,999, it will render as if they are actually there. So when you save your scenefile, there is actually only ONE tree in it.

That's kinda oversimplification, but that's the basic idea.

Of course scenefile sizes will increase somewhat when using Instancing, because of Bryce needing to "write down" where all those Instanced objects are, but it will be nothing in size compared to saving a scene with a ton of regular copied objects.

Hey, btw, has anyone noticed that Bryce now drops trees onto Terrains CORRECTLY??
(and keeps doing so while following the Terrains hills/valley's)

No more trees roots hovering above your mountain!!!

Its just a way of STUFFING scenes with multiple objects without killing your computer.

Mountains absolutely covered in trees.

I'm overjoyed, to say the least. And, like I said, its not all in there yet.  :o)

Happy news indeed! I started way back when with Bryce2, but I migrated to Carrara for just such features as "instancing". I don't know if the DAZ development team was able to borrow some code from Carrara or is implementing entirely new code, but this looks very promising. Being able to use Bryce skies as HDRIs is a great feature too.

Well out of respect for TheBryster I've held off on saying this but whew...finally Bryce is attempting to catch up at least with Terragen2 and Vue...way t go DAZ team is all I can say...can't wait to get the time to install and play a bit.. ...

 

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound

Bryce is finally all grown up. :) This is fantastic.

I'll render some Sphere over water tomorrow. :)

PS: I just realized, the improvements must be huge in Bryce 7 because, Bryce 6.3 and earlier version would have crashed and burnt with the abuse that people are throwing at 7 now with the instancing which is copying objects rather than true instancing.

Oh the instancing does work on any object - like my little boxes, here:
Instances

But it needs some work - like a "Put On",  or "Land On" - and an option to choose what to land it on... so you could put the boxes on the egg rather than only on the ground.  Otherwise I've got a lot of work ahead carefully placing the boxes so they are flush with the egg rather than poking into it, and so they are not poking into the other boxes...

Bryce still has a long way to catch up with the likes of Terragen2 and vue. Installed the beta, played for an hour, uninstalled it and decided to wait till something interesting happens with the beta.

Boekenwuurm over in the DAZ forum just posted this tip:

When instancing (inside the lab when brushing) hold down the Alt or Control-Alt  keys.  [May depend on whether you have Mac or PC...]

When the instancing is done, the copied items will orient to the normals of the base item.  (Can we say HAIR anybody???)

4000 clumps of grass....(base sphere set to 'hidden') sphere rotated 90 degrees between each brush hit. Camera and object rotation starting to be slower, but the render only took ~3 minutes, of which 2/3 was the AA run.

Well, I figured I would try a portrait shot with the new Sky based HDRI. It looks pretty goog, other than the fact the AA quit at 23%. The render to that point took about 12 hours .... 1.5 hours was the actual render, the rest was the AA. I went to bed, so no telling how long it all took.

anyway, its not too bad.

there are a couple folks from the Bryce Beta Team here. Did you guys notice all the crashes?
For instance, if I click on an object in the working window, it crashes. Quite a few other instances as well, but that one I can reproduce every time.

There are reports of this in the DAZ thread as well.

**LOL...well all I can say is it's about time. I started with Bryce as soon as it was ported to the  Windows platform...Bryce 2. I'm using 5.5 and really can't wait until all the beta testing is done and the bugs ironed out to try it. I'm glad they decided to stick with it and make it a viable and competetive software again. My hat's off to Daz and the programers.

I think the number of crashes depends on the computer you are using. I have found it fairly stable :) But please do report any problems

I've been having a lot of crashes, mainly relating to clicking on objects, in the regular working window or in the IL.

The other cool thing so far is that you can use the scene sky to create HDRI . This is really cool.

Yes.

Found the Alt key allows alignment to the egg's surface - which is nice but the 'avoid other objects when positioning' by holding down Ctrl - does not work.

When?  Did anyone say when it will time out?

Also I got the impression that there would be another Beta with more new features to beta test after that, but no one said when - or how long after this one times out.

I still think the B6.1 is better, the shadows look better as well as the materials, but it's not really a fair test as the camera angles are different - to be a fair test you need the same angles, same sky, same everything, to really tell.

I think B7 is better of renders shown.  I think ambiance of reflections is too high in the first image.  Real world would never have a refection brighter that the original object.  My opinion.

Well I  decided to try the ibl on a scene that without the ibl takes about 40 minutes (fairly complicated with a lot of larger models in it etc.) on an i7 with asus ultimate board and 6 gigs of ram. The estimated time in AA is 2 days, 5 hours ,58 minutes. Thats a real lot of time difference.  Plus when I tried to stop the render it just froze Bryce abd that was that. Will try different settings and see what happens.

  • Again, HDRI/IBL Lighting - Start with a quality value of 16. In fact, I NEVER take it any higher than 16. When Bryce loads your HDRI, its default is a value of 256. (so, take it all the way down)

Also; this version of Bryce does not turn your sun off automatically when applying an HDRI, so that will be another light in addition to your IBL it has to calculate.

And, if you have any other lights in your scene, well that will also comlicate matters. As will any light that has soft shadows activated.

Nope, haven't had that happen to me at all. Like, never, ever.
What's your specs?

  • Just to make sure everyone understands, this is very, VERY beta (very early). Do not think you are about  to install "Vue 9.0", lol.

Heh.  
Now, I on the other hand, see distinct banding in the rendered shadows if I use anything at 256 or less, so I crank it UP as high as my machine will take.  
Sorry, AS, I will have to agree to disagree on this point.  
On the other hand, for me, the Intensity settings go WAY down.... sometimes as far as .5, depending on the IBL image used.

I've got the click on anything in a scene and it crashes problem so I can't try any of the shiny new features yet.  , I see other people have it too so hopefully the next beta will sort that. I've filed a bug report.

Oh, I agree absolutely. That intensity slider is really almost too powerful, lol. I would say most HDRI's I use will have an Intensity value of 5 or less.

  • Not really disagreeing. Yes, on a value Quality value of 16, the "banding" is more noticeable, I just always mention that HDRI users (especially first time users), go with 16 as it will be faster when they are setting up their scene. No reason for test renders to take 5 times longer, as they can when the Quality setting is at the default of 256 versus using 16.

But, yeah as you would make a final render, a user might want to increase that Quality to change the shadows. Of course render times go up, but with all things 3D, its usually a tradeoff, lol.  ;o)

i've filed a few so far...getting click crashes in both the main window and IL.

I do have a very old computer. XP ... 1.5gig ram... AMD64 3200+  that's 6 years old.

Its a Known issue thats being worked on..

I loaded some of my BR6 files and found the IBL settings for BR7 are more sensitive...   I could get a lot of hdr from smaller settings....

Have ya tried Instancing 2D tree's yet..If ya havent try...Put several of them in the scene first and then ya can add them to the BrushEditor...Whats so cool if ya go into the at]tgributes of the 2d tree's first and point at camers ya can actually do a n animation and they will always look at the camera...

*Yes I have tried the instance and it rocks.....  the 2D tress pointing at the moving camera is a great Idea.. 

BTW...   I textured my Sub obj saved it and imported again...   Came in all textured.. I'm really thrilled about this function....
