Subject: Advice on purchase, please

Snarlygribbly ( ) posted Wed, 20 January 2010 at 4:58 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 8:42 AM

I'm considering purchasing this product from DAZ:
http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/-/aged-for-v4?item=9799&_m=a

It is a DAZ Studio specific product, and I only user Poser.

I am prepared to apply texture maps etc. manually, or using VSS, and I assume the morph injections will work too?

Are there any problems that you can foresee that would make it imprudent for me to invest in this product?

Is there an easier way to get this product to work in Poser?

"DAZ Material Presets to Apply Options (.DSB) " - this means you will have to do all your own material setups (which you said you're OK with doing, so fine).

Read the file listing here:
http://artzone.daz3d.com/wiki/doku.php/azproduct/9799

99% certain you can adapt all this into Poser.  You'll have a lot of junk to sort through, but the morphs are given in PZ2 format at least (plaintext) so once you extract it into your runtime, then run the updater for V4/M4 (both), the morphs ought to work.  There are even INJ/REM poses in PZ2 format to go and load the morphs for you.  If you want to pick out the garbage, you could safely delete everything with a *.dsb extension (or just not install it in the first place).

The textures are just jpegs, displacement maps are TIF, nothing tricky there.

Works just fine in Poser for me.  You just have to plug the textures in yourself (There's a texture, bump, displacement, and specular map for each body part), but once you do that, you're golden :)  The INJ/REM's work in Poser, too.  This render is Poser 8.

Thanks pjz99, that's very helpful.

Are the .dsb files in plain text and is there any useful information I can extract from them to make the process easier?

I'm thinking of the values that will need to be entered into the PoserSurface node (Displacement value, Transparency value etc.)

I should be able to work out appropriate values of course, but if they were available somewhere it would be easier.

@JenX

Did you simply plug the maps in, or did you adjust any values in the PoserSurface node too?

This is looking quite promising - thank you!

The "Values" of the settings in DS aren't going to translate at all to Poser, so the only thing you really can do is place them yourself, find what you like and what you think looks best, and go from there. For some reason (and, no, I don't know why or how to explain it, lol), displacement, bump, specularity, ambient, and most other settings don't match up at all in the programs.   So, I'd start from the default numbers and fiddle around from there.

That is mostly just plugging the textures in.  The only one I changed was the specular node, and that was because it's black and set to 0 by default.  So, I changed it to white, and slowly turned the dial until I found a suitable spot.
Also, remember to turn Displacement on in your render settings, or it won't render the displacement.  I had about 1/2 hour worth of "WTF???" moments trying to render that image, lol, and then realized that I hadn't turned displacement on in the render settings.

Perhaps Jenx would save an mc6 file for the material setup and make it available for Poser users ?

If you give me a bit, let me tweak it past just the basics, and sure ;)

The other alternative to plugging values into your PoserSurface would be to use BagginsBill's VSSProp to assign them.  You just need to connect the appropriate maps to their designated plugins.  But I may be opening a whole can of worms introducing this to a newbie.  However, if you are interested in how this process works, conduct a forum search for VSS.

Wow, thanks JenX, you're a star!

I've bought the DAZ package so I'll give it a try later.

Cheers,

No problem :)  I think it took me more effort to get the durn thing linked than to tweak and save ;)

I don't see that this got answered, so: DSB stands for "DAZ Studio Binary" - not plaintext, and really not of any use even if they were (if you've ever examined a plaintext file that D|S spat out).
