Subject: PPro2010 64bit Renderer - i'm confused

I guess I'm kind of a dolt about this - how do you use it? I expected my renders to zoom now vs 32bit but it seems the same ?

Its still using the same amount of memory as P8... no more than 1.5gb of 8gb.

Come on ! What's the secret to unleash the beast I paid too much money for? LOL 

on a side note - i just realized i can still edit my scene while rendering in background. That's flipping awesome!

as I recall you have to use the background render feature(or whatever they call it) to access the 64 bit renderer.

If you installed the 64bit version of Pro 2010 on a 64bit Windows, then everything except the library runs in 64bit, automatically.

It's probably using not more than 1.5GB RAM because the scene you're rendering isn't bigger than 1.5GB RAM.

PP2010 has both 32bit and 64bit files, so that it can run on 32bit machines.  To ensure that you are rendering with FFrender64, go to the title bar on screen and follow **edit:general preferences**, select the **render** tab, then check the *separate process* box.

When installing to a 64bit system, you can un-check the box for install 32bit files.

A scene of 80Mb in preview can pull 8Gb during rendering.

For those who may not have thought of this, make usre you are using all of your cores on a multi-core processor.

Hmmm, I'm using Vista 64bit and I'm having problems with rendering.  If I have separate process box checked or if use the background renderer I get the "FFRender Application has stopped working" message.  How can I see which renderer Poser is using?

Vestmann, FFRender is the 32bit FireFly.  If you open the Task Manager during a render, it should show FFRender64 as a process.

I'm assuming I should have mine set at 4? I think its currently set at 8 and that was default when I opened the dialog.

I'm rendering V4 + Fable Hair + Angel Lights, its still rendering in the background and has taken about an hour and a half so far.

That's the odd thing. I don't see FFRender as a process at all.    I see Render Status under Applications but nothing under Processes...

Mac OS users will have 64 bit rendering, but the main application is still 32-bit. I have no idea when and if the Poser application will be available in 64-bit. Maybe a SM/CP/Poser developer can speak to that.

also - this is using Queue Manager to render. ( just wanted to test it out )

I know you don't need a truck to move 1 can but seriously - Shouldn't it be WAY faster to deliver 1 can than 5,000 ?

... If I have separate process checked, FFRender64 shows up under Processes and then it dies just before it starts rendering.  Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Vex, the core i7 is a hyperthreaded quad, and 8 threads will probably be best.  While the main core threads are fetching, the hyperthreads can run so as to get the most total use from your processor.  Galadriel has a core i7 and during a render all four cores hover near 100%, which means I'm getting maximum benefit of the processor's capacity.  The pics below pulled over 10Gb each for a full screen render (2560x1600).

Vestmann, your issue has me puzzled;  let's hope someone who knows more will pick it up.

One P8 flaw which has been fixed is the OBJ import failure for certain meshes.  P8 choked on my Nasmyth catadioptric telescope, great mallorn tree, and spiral stairway.  PP2010 imported all of them.  That's better.   These two freebies will be packaged and released within a few days...

Vestmann, when you opened PP2010, did you get a security popup notifying you that "_____________" wants access to the internet?  Parts of Poser talk to each other via the LAN, so blocking them would cause problems.

Just a possibility;  I'm just trying to think of anything to try.

A Windows user myself, but indeed, that should be FFrender64.exe running there....
Try rendering in que, try rendering in background, try rendering in main window.

Collect data and report to SM.

strange...

A sugestion   . . . .  Check firewall....

Perhaps FFRender64.exe is still being blocked?

And Poser and its FFRender not?

You want the threads equal to the number of Cores, to twice the number of Cores. Separate Process is best.

Those with a Crash using FFRender64, make sure your user name does not contain any non ASCII characters.

OK, now you have confused me.  Do I want them equal, or twice?  I have a 4 core system.  Should I set threads to 4, or 8?

Try a few test scenes at final render settings, and compare render times, using 4 threads, then using 8 threads.

In most scenes, my Core i7 did about the same, whether it was 4 or 8 threads, but on other scenes (which I would guess involved more fetching), 4 threads let cores go idle periodically, whereas rendering with 8 threads kept the cores busy (and thus rendered more quickly).

I did do that; and I found that setting it at 8 sped everything up considerably across the board no matter how complex the scene was.

So, i am leaving it at 8.

Queue Manager is rendering 2 single-frames on 1 computer right now. I have QM setup on 2 other computers .

just as im typing this my 4th render terminated early and cut off ( jumped straight to 100% completed )

my 5th jumped up super high too and I think it's going to be broken too ;/

I dunno if you meant for your analogy to be that bad but a truck delivering can's has to go the same distance for 1 can or 5000 cans. It'll use less GAS for 1 can, but not less time.

Fantastic looking Freebies! I can't wait! Now, where exactly is the "Render in Background" setting? I know where separate process is and have it checked by default.

I have found that rendering the same scene on poser8 and in poserpro 2010 64bit seperate process has absolutly no difference in render times, i can only assume the 64bit helps with larger scenes due to the access to more ram.

im running pro2010 on:-
i7 860 running on 8 threads
8gb ram
2.3Tb hd
1.8gb nVidia geforce 260

and i have done 10 seperate renderers in both 2010 and p8 and the times remain the same...

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

  That's what I've found, also.  PP2010 is faster than PPro or P7, and when compared to P8, PP2010 is about equal in speed at modest render loads but greatly extends capacity.  PP2010 also adds gamma correction and network rendering, plus offers some more options for export/fusion with other studios .  I've been toying with the idea of getting a 3D "printer" (newer/cheaper than the rapid prototyper).

LostInSpaceman:  I'll be getting off duty and going home in an hour, and will probably get those two elvish treehouse/observatory models packaged sometime today.  :D

it takes a lot longer to pack up and ship and deliver 5000 cans than 1 is what it means

Make sure the FFRenderer hasn't got Run this program as administrator box ticked in the properties.  Once I un-ticked seemed to start working without a problem.

The truck/can analogy is not correct.  A truck delivering 1 can vs 5000 is like a quad processor rendering a simple scene, compared to rendering a scene with a lot of objects and textures and nodes etc. in it.

A truck should deliver 1 can faster than a hand cart.  With a quad core the expectation is that it would render a simple scene faster than a dual core.

Oh, this has changed since Poser Pro and I hadn't noticed.  So I just tried  clicking the camera-shaped render button and yep, it engages FFRender64.  A good change.  ^^

I don't understand why the 32bit engine (FFRender) would be attempting to run.  Open the Task Manager (hold CTRL-Shift-Esc simultaneously)* and look in the processes tab for either FFRender or FFRender64.
  Anyone have an idea about Vestmann's situation?

*  Or mouse down to the task bar at the bottom of the screen, right-click to get a pop-up menu, and select Task Manager.

 My situation was fixed by changing my Windows user name.   For some reason you can't have special characters in your user name when using the background rendering.

 I have no preference list when I go there.  It just closes poserpro 2010 down, saying it can't find the .xml file.   I'd like to try my latest render and try it bigger if this works.  

Do I just make a dummy preferences.xml and stick in the folder?  I had to delete mine a week or so ago because I closed the program minimized and then it never would maximize again.   I thought it would build one on it's own the next time I ran Poserpro but I guess not.

I installed both the 32 and 64 bit versions and ended up with two desktop icons, "Poser Pro 2010" and "Poser Pro 2010 (x86)". I've never used the second one. Make sure you don't either, it's the 32 bit version.
