Quote - Sometimes the security updates can be more trouble than good, flibbits if it's any consolation Windows 7 doesn't see XP or Vista on my network.
Hmmm...mine does. Odd...
Windows 7 64 sees the other Vista 32 machines in the house and the other machines see it. Granted, it was no picnic getting the network to play nice, but obviously it can be done :o).

Yeah, I see the expiration dates any time I go to Windows update. Granted, Macs are 'officially' cooler, but some people may not know this, that need to.

The company my Wife works for still uses Windows 2000. They are not a little place-their sales are about $100 billion a year. Apparently is cheaper to pay MS for updates than to maintain XP or Vista, as even the new machines they purchase are wiped and have Win2k installed in-house.
I can't say I blame them, as I think 2k is by far the best version of Windows I've used.....

I must be doing something wrong then, not that it really matters, the last non Windows 7 machine in the house is being retired shortly, it's so old it struggles to run XP.

To be honest, I've never had more trouble with the network than I've had with Windows 7. Isn't Win7 supposed to be easier? lol Too bad I'm better with the network than the hub, or I'd have HIM wrestle with it ;o)

As oppose to wrestling with you? :woot: I'm off before I get myself in trouble. :tt2:

I haven't updated my windows XP in ages now, automatic updates are off. I haven't had any security problems for ages either. Whenever I did have my machine up to date and automatic updates on, I only had security troubles, even to the point where I had to reformat due to a nasty virus. That happened to me twice and I figured to not update instead. Haven't had any problems after that.
As far as I'm concerned, these security updates are far from being secure at all. Seems like the people who attack windows, focus on the newest version, leaving the older ones alone.
Having said that, I make sure my firewall, anti-virus and anti-mallware apps are up to date. That is far more helpful then a lot of these updates that MS produces, which often leaves me wondering what they actually did update and why my machine is now suddenly trying to connect to the internet like crazy and why my machine is getting slower and slower update after update.
MS can update as much as they like, they can stop support if the please, I'm not to bothered about all of that.

I don't do automatic updates, either, for the same reason. I got one last week to update the WMP and it fragged my OS. I had to reinstall from the backup (which was nice since I didn't have to reinstall any programs) but I turned the auto updates off.

It's nothing but a little script that shows what you're broadcasting. No-one else can see it unless you post it like this. It isn't meant to mine data and I'm really getting tired of people jumping all over me for something that means no harm and can't possibly do any harm.

I've changed my tagline because so many people don't understand how that one works.
It's a small script that reads back what your IP is broadcasting, even if it's being relayed, but nobody else can see what your information is. The only one I could see was mine, which was correct.
I went through a huge flame war over this about two months ago and I'm just not up to a repeat so I decided to dump it in favor of a simple text tag.

Once I was reassured that it was safe I dropped the Issue... I really hope it is not starting over..!

Responding to the original post, things aren't so dire. Microsoft has not yet stopped supporting XP and Vista. Microsoft is no longer supporting versions of those OSs that have not been updated to the latest service pack (which is a free update). If anybody is concerned about losing such support, all they have to do is update their systems to the latest service pack. Anybody who hasn't done that already probably isn't too worried about not getting updates since the service packs represent cumulative security updates and other fixes to the operating system. Microsoft simply isn't supporting versions of those systems that are out of date to begin with.Microsoft does eventually stop updating old operating systems and XP is currently supposed to end in Apr 2014.

Support is ending for some versions of Windows
Support for Windows Vista without any service packs will end on April 13, 2010
Support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) will end on July 13, 2010
If you're running one of these versions after support ends, you won't get any further security updates.
