Hi, I'm still a bit new to Renderosity, I joined a couple of weeks ago and can just about find my way around. Anyway, I didn't come here to chat. I was just fiddling around with a texture I've been trying to do on Poser. Could anyone give any comments on how it looks? I have drawn in the eyebrows and I know they need to be neatened up but do they look real enough to pass the test? I'm hoping to sell this, so if you think it should be improved in any way *please* post a reply. Thanks. Victoria

shadowcat ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 12:33 PM

use anti-aliasing, in all honesty the eyebrows look nowhere near real.

Clissold ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 12:40 PM

OK, I'll use anti alias, thanks shadowcat. About the eyebrows, I can sort that out, just use different tones, tidy them up a bit etc.

PilotHigh ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 12:41 PM

Change your camera focal length to at least 100 (I use 300) for close-ups like this and under render options enable anti-aliasing to get rid of the jaggies. Your picture is too small to judge the texture properly - maybe make it twice the size.

Clissold ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 12:45 PM

OK, I'll put a new one on in a minute

Is this OK? There's a few tiny bits I have accidently missed out as you can see.

PilotHigh ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:24 PM

To tell you the truth I think you will have a very hard time selling any textures now that aren't photorealistic, unless you are a very talented artist. As an example download Symphany's free painted 'Tesoro' in freestuff http://www.renderosity.com/freestuff.ez and take a close look at it. I used it exclusively until the photorealistic ones showed up. Check out SteffyZZ's Asia in the store and the gallery and you'll see what I mean. If you have a digital camera you can photograph one of your friends or yourself and make a texture with that. They are getting cheaper now - some are as low as $30. Sorry to burst your bubble here - of course you don't have to listen to me. ;-) But better to be forwarned.

Clissold ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:33 PM

I know the eyebrows are absolutely rubbish but I didn't just ask specifically on that. Why don't you take a look at the other features???

Eowyn ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:44 PM

Personally I have to agree with PilotHigh. There are so many textures for sale these days that only the best of the best will actually sell... The ultra-photorealistic textures are THE thing now, check out StefyZZ's Noa and Asia and you'll get the point. Your texture seems to be coming all right, but it's not something I would pay for - sorry if the truth hurts. But, don't give up, keep on doing your thing. I find all this really rewarding even though I've never earned one single dollar with this.

Clissold ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:49 PM

Thanks Eowyn. I know what you mean. I wouldn't even buy it myself actually! I will keep trying though. I've just got to adjust it here and there. But, because it's in the making, it looks like a weirdo but I WILL KEEP TRYING!!!!!

Clissold ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:50 PM

By the way, has anyone bothered to look at the other bits? It's not just the eyebrows you know.

PilotHigh ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:53 PM

I'm sorry you misunderstood me. I did not coment on the eyebrows, but on what I could see in the second image which is really only the eye area and part of the nose. If you made the eyeball and lashes from scratch - congratulations, but there are many free ones around. And if they are free ones you won't be able to sell them. That's about all I have to offer, sorry.

Styxx ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 1:58 PM

on a positive note, the trans map for the eyelash is great and the eye itself looks fantastic! Perhaps a wee but of color variation in the skin would help? Not sure though as I am a terrible texture maker! lol..

Swannie ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 4:39 PM

Well, comparing the eyelashes and eye textures with the eyebrows and skin texture I don't think that Victoria made these ones herself. Not insulting you, Victoria, but you have to give the texture makers some credit. Cos you can't just make a texture like that. It's a hell of a job and it needs a lot of skills and time to do it. Just keep on practising and I'm sure we've gained another texture maker here. I just see it, because eventhough you've recently started this (I'm guessing this, cos you haven't made a single image before. Correct me if I'm wrong though) you're already interested in making textures. And don't we all start with the easy stuff and become better after every attempt? I know I still have a lot to learn. Lots of succes to you, Victoria! Finest regards, Johnnie...

Clissold ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 4:47 PM

Hang on! Hang on!!!! I have made the eyes etc. (Honest!!!) And as for the skin I got any old colour and slapped it on, I must admit it looks terrible!!! All I did for the eyes by the way was scan an advert in, blahdy blahdy blah. I'll show you the advert if I have to. It was a Revlon lipstick ad!!! lol

cliss ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 5:18 PM

Thanks to you guys for all your input and helpful comments on the texture. the member who is trying to achieve a respectable looking render is my 10 year old daughter who is facinated in CGI, poser in particular. She has scoured old photos of her Mum and myself to achieve the lips and eyes, the lashes come in the form of a scanned in cheap pair of false eye lashes from clairs accessaries,(live UK you will know the place) and from the messages she has sent to cake 1, iron bear, syyd,Destiny,Tammy, to name a few she made her own trans map. she probably will hate me for posting this as it gives out her age and she is afraid that she will be treated as "just another kid". Hey i read recently that most of the artists here are like myself on the good side of 40 hey life bigins at 40 does`nt it. she will im sure be sending in many postings in the future which i hope will be better and better, But hey is she the youngest member? Watch this space a proud Dad may be posting how renderosity encouraged a young lady to rise to be art director of final fantasy 3? and beyond thanks guys for your input cliss

PilotHigh ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 5:53 PM

10 YEARS OLD!!!!!!! WOW! And she made the eyes and eyelashes herself. ;-) I'm humbled now. I worked in Poser for weeks before I even had the courage to make changes to the free skin textures I downloaded - and I'm in my 50s!! Way to go Victoria... Aren't the kids of this generation amazing!

chrisjol ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 6:36 PM

Here's another 50+ year old who's amazed by her technical ability. On my first computer you could only play pingpong or tetris. Keep it up Vicky, you have talent.

Tammy ( ) posted Mon, 30 July 2001 at 10:27 PM

Wow 10, that is amazing :) If she needs any help have her IM me, Id be happy to help. She is doing a great job and has allot of talent, in a few years watch out!

Clissold ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 3:42 AM

Thanks you guys! Oh god I'm blushing now!!! I'm uploading another image now so you can see the rest of the face...

file_196505.jpg

Is there any changes I could make?

PilotHigh ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 8:47 AM

Victoria, just wanted to remind you about your camera focal length. Try 150 and the face won't be so tall and skinny looking and we'll be able to see the texture better. You're doin great, hon. Aeriol

SkoolDaze ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 10:24 AM

You did a very nice job on the eyes and the eyelash transmaps... In addition, the input you received on the camera focal length is very good too; it will help you see the detail of the face better with close up renders... I would concentrate on the skin of her face a little more and as was said in earlier posts, look at how some others have accomplished good skin textures. If you have access to a digital camera or a regular camera and a scanner, check out Cake1's tutorial on mapping face photos onto Victoria, you can find it in the tutorial section. She shows you everything from taking the images to mapping them onto Vicki's head... It is a great tutorial and very easy to follow. You have a good start here, so just keep working on it! Be sure to ask a lot of questions and good luck! John

igohigh ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 10:47 AM

Not being a texture maker or even an "artist" I do definatly see more of an atraction to the newer "photo-realistic" skin textures, both 'scan created' and 'hand-painted' ones. Throw in a few mild skin imperfections like pours, moles, freckles, or whathaveya and it transforms the model from a "painted maniquin" to an almost touchable image of perfection.

Clissold ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 12:45 PM

I am using cake1's tut at the mo but I thought, well I don't really know what I thought. I just slapped together a few photos and that's what I came up with. A tip to everyone : Don't do what I did! I'm going to start a new one, by doing my Mum. I'll keep working on this one and I think I'll just use it as a gallery image. Thanks for the tips everyone. Vic NOTE: I do have access to a digital camera, well, I did. Someone nicked it so one of Mum's friends has lent us his.

Hiya Clissold, Nice work for starting. I won't even post some of my very first poser efforts. ;] A lot of people like photoreal textures, some of us like painted textures. It depends a lot on what effect your trying to create, and what renderer you're using. Since I do my rendering in Bryce 4, I tend to go for a painted look in my images that Bryce does nicely. Open up and examine some of the better hand done free textures: Bebop's, Tim Laubauch's, and the Shari texture by [can't remember the maker]. Your dad should have links for some of those sites... if not, I'll try and hunt them up for you. All of the people I mentioned do excellent work on range of skin tones in texturing. Studying them, and then taking them into poser and rendering them under different lights will give you a lot of input on how the various skin shadings show up on a model. Also... don't give up. Some of us have been doing this for a while. We did NOT get good overnight - I'm sure I'm not the only one with a LOt of practice attempts on my harddrive. Best of luck and I'll look forward to seeing your work as you progress. ;]

** I'm sure I'm not the only one with a LOt of practice attempts on my harddrive. ** hehe... too true... I have almost 4 gig of practice and unfinished textures/images on my harddrive...

Clissold ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 2:21 PM

lol I never thought that all you excellent artists (Yes, that's all of you, apart from me of course. I've still got a long way to go) still have heaps of unfinished textures! I won't give up, thank you for you encouragement Ironbear :) By the way, I just want to say that I never lied to anyone about my age, I'm very honest! lol It's just that people assumed I was older.

Ironbear ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 2:58 PM

You write and talk like someone much older. I know college grads that don't have as good a grasp of english and sentence structure. [Heh. I'm one of them. ;)] We've just been doing this longer... and we all started out as beginners also. I've been doing poser 4 for 10 months, longer if you count poser2. I've been doing bryce for 5 years or more. You get good when you play with anything that long.

Thank you for the compliment :) I went out to Tasmania because my family lives out there. I went to high school with my Aunt (13yrs old) for some reason. We had a spelling test. Everyone except me had learnt them. My Aunt got 6/20 and I had 19/20. The only word I got wrong was something I didn't know what the heck was!!!

archetype ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 6:27 PM

I'm glad you posted your work and I hope to get a chance to see you develop as an artist. Your interest in getting the details right will help you become a very good artist I think.

elgeneralisimo ( ) posted Tue, 31 July 2001 at 6:34 PM

Suggestions: It's been said before, but, set your camara Focal to 150 or better. And change the default lighting. If you use the default lights; change the color to white(RBG = 1). Turn off shadows on light 2 and 3, set 1 to 1(if it isn't allready). Turn map size up to 1024. And vary the intensity to taste. http://www.fortunecity.com/rivendell/lucky/472/happyworldlanduncut/index.htm Has all of the HappyWonderLand tex maps.

OK, it still needs a little bit of work but what do you think of this?

That's getting there. ;]

Wow Vic - I am really impressed with your texture work. I'm going to have to introduce you to my son Matthew who is also 10. He makes models - and you make textures. You two could be the next Steve and Rena! LOL Not sure if you've heard of them but they run Poserworld. Steve makes the models and Rena makes the textures and they are a great team. Looking forward to seeing more of your work! Jade
