Subject: Exporting for Photoshop Extended

inquire ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2010 at 1:56 PM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 10:03 PM

I have PoserPro2010. I'm about to buy, when it's released, Photoshop CS 5. If I wish to export a figure from Poser so that it can be imported in Photoshop, how do I go about that? Does PoserPro2010 have that ability already built in?

cs4e apparently don't recog. poser obz files, hence:

  • export wavefront.obj from poser or
  • expand obz file in geom. folder

then import smart obj to cs4e

I'm going to get CS5 Ex. I hope it does a better job. But, assuming it's cs4e, and I export as a wavefront.obj, can I import into Photoshop so that the textures, materials, colors, lighting, all look as they did in the Poser render? In other words, will I get a uni-colored plastic-looking thing, or will it look as the figure did in the render?

cs4e does various render styles, incl. ray-trace.  I found the lighting seems brighter in poser (directional lites only), but otherwise it looks like the smooth-shaded preview. for some reason this one failed to import the tiff file - may not have found it.  no, wait, I forgot to load 'em.  once loaded, it looks like texture-shaded preview.

I dunno if cs5e supports IBL/IDL/GI, but at least cs4e will import the three default infinite lites.
ask in photoshop forum about automating the process whereby it applies the tiff file to all mtls.
for me it doesn't load the tiff file by itself, even tho in same folder level as obj file.

Thank you for your help and the screen shot illustration. You say it looks like the texture-shaded preview. Does it ever look as good as the  render?

No.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

cs4e renders as good as, but much slower than, poser 4 IMVHO. no shader trees, no IDL/GI. I would advise them not to try to add those to cs5e. it has GC and exposure control, but that's not enuff.

I did manage to find this, after posting my question here:

Look at Chapter 19 »3d Basics« in
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/photoshop_cs4_help.pdf

»Photoshop supports the following 3D file formats: U3D, 3DS, OBJ, KMZ, and DAE.«

if the tutorial only needs to involve how to export poser figure from poser, very simple (OS X).
opening the obj file in cs4e just requires using the "open" cmd. the downside is how slow it
manipulates and renders in cs4e IMVHO, but at least one can paint directly on the obj.

  1. select figure in poser
  2. file/export/wavefront obj
  3. single frame
  4. uncheck ground in hierarchy
  5. leave export options at default
  6. save to new obj folder, which will have obj and mtl files
  7. then the tedious part:
  8. get list of all texture files (scripts/printinfo/listFiles)
  9. manually put copies of all texture files in new obj folder
  10. there is an util script to do step 9 by machine, but it doesn't work well for me
  11. open obj file in cs4e like any image file (doesn't have to be smart object)
  12. if the texture names are all identical to the ones in mtl file, cs4e will load all of them

Where is that utility script -- the one to do step 9 by machine? I'd like to try it. Here's hoping.
