Subject: O/T .temp files
By all means, delete them!

Actually, it's a good idea to delete .tmp files as well, particularly those left by rogue programmes like MSN Messenger - never cleans up after itself :cursing:. I use a script that cleans them up for me at startup... just pop this in your Startup folder and the next time you boot, it will invoke the script (you might need to give it permission - in WinXP, it just runs) and then you sit and wait a bit as it cleans them all up. I've cleaned off gigabytes of rubbish left behind that way.

where "User Name" is your name. I have no idea where it might be in Win 7 or if Win 7 will allow something to run at start-up... I can't afford Win 7 atm so I'm sorry I can't help you.

What extension should I put on that script. Right now, I saved it as a .txt file in my Startup folder.

The extension should be .vbs - it is a visual basic script... Windows Scripting will read and execute it when it sees it in your Startup folder.
If it's the first time running on your system, be prepared for a long boot session: it will look everywhere and clean up anything ending with .tmp and then tell you hold many megabytes it's found and deleted. Sometimes your AV sees it as something bad: tell AV it's okay. Hey, you have the source code: you can easily see it's not sending back details of your personal life to the mother ship. :biggrin:

You can also use CCleaner, which in addition to clearing out the temp folder cleans a host of other detritus including (at your option) log files, chkdsk fragments, browser caches, and application specific temporary files like Photoshop, Flash, media players etc. You can also set it to run at startup and optionally do a secure wipe of deleted files. Highly recommended.N.B. A number of security folks recommend disabling the association for .vbs files to prevent malicious scripts from running. Your AV or other security software may block execution of .vbs files also. If your system is set up to 'hide file extensions for known file types' (I think the default through XP at least), files like the infamous AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs can appear to be innocent images or text files but in reality be malicious script code.
If you don't write or run script files often, it's not a bad idea to change the association so that .vbs files open in Notepad. You can still run them from a command line ex:
Wscript DeleteTempFiles.vbs
e.g Wscript "C:MyApps DeleteTempFiles.vbs"
Put that command in a text file on your desktop and rename it to DeleteTempFiles.bat and you're still set with a convenient way to run it - or put the .bat file in your startup folder. I'm not sure if Vista/Win7 place any new restrictions on this stuff, as I too still run XP.
Just to clarify, the file Robyn posted is safe since she checked the code. Actually, safer than the stuff I write but I have only my own computer to destroy :-)

One thing I have noticed is that when I searched for .tmp or.temp files it found templates and textures everywhere.Are these temp files or the actual templates and textures connected with Poser etc? Cheers

They might be textures... as long as there is a .tmp or .temp after the name, they were generated by an untidy programme who doesn't believe in cleaning up after itself and are safe to get rid of.

Does anyone know if it is safe to delete .temp files stored on my computer? My machine is having a heart attack at the moment and while I was searching for files to delete I came across 3.26gigs of temp files mainly made by Poser! Cheers
