Subject: What is EASIEST architectural modeling software for Poser?

TheOwl ( ) posted Fri, 17 September 2010 at 6:59 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 6:29 AM

I want to make houses, rooms., furniture and other hard props.

I have seen Curvy3d and it looks promising.

It is primarily used for organic modeling.

Is it also good in hard modeling? And most importantly, how difficult is the learning curve for using it and does it help to model stuff much faster than the current pricey modeling software right now?

Or maybe you guys have other software suggestions?

Passion is anger and love combined. So if it looks angry, give it some love!

Why not something free?

Sketchup is supposed to be pretty good - and it's free.  I haven't used it in ages though so I don't know what the latest version is like

I make a vote for Sketchup. The free version doesn't have .obj export, but there are free "rubies" (Sketchup's word for plugins) that will export to .obj.

Haven't tried it either, but I kept seeing Sketchup stuff in Kerkythea when I was having a play in that renderer and the models looked pretty awesome.
Ease-of-use is so subjective: a lot depends on what you're accustomed to. Even "learning-curve" is based on how much you can leverage skills learned in other apps to the new one you're trying to learn. Perhaps that's what makes Blender3D such a bear to learn: it ain't nothing like anything else under the sun. 😄

How about Carrara 7 Pro in the September  3DWorld Magazine Issue 133?    It's learning curve isn't that bad and you can put all your textures on the house etc in that program and export it into Poser as an .obj.  It can do automobiles, homes, walls, doors, light fixtures, cabinets, stereos, turntables, etc.

Wings is free, dead easy to learn and you'll be able to model just about anything with it.

i  cannot see what  W3D cannot do    except the one thing I would like is a  "mirror verticy  selection" function.
W3D  will  mirror a whole chunk of mesh - but this can become problematic .
oh  yeah  also  you  cannot weld  2 verticies together  in  the basic sense -  you  need to  export/ import  to  a program  like poser  for single verticy  welds.

but this is a post for a different forum

W3D  is  awesome
try it

its  free and its  stable -

I favor in SketchUp, it's free and all, but it does have it's architectural tools down pat.  Never tried Wings 3d and all.  Never limit yourself to just one program, try and see what works best for you.

In case anyone's interested, here's a building I done -- in SketchUp 7.1

I personally like Carrara Pro from DAZ. But I've been using it since 1998 when it was known as Ray Dream Studio. Its a great all in one program.

If your looking for free I agree with the others Wings 3D is pretty cool. I tried it but went back to Carrara I guess because I'm comfortable with its tools.

Dont forget Blender. Its also a free all in one type 3D application.

Architectural work such as rooms etc?

can't do much better than Sketchup for this....since that's exactly what it's made for. the bulk of the Ruby addons are made by Architects for Architects.

there's a huge Ruby addon base at places such as forums.sketchucation.com/ with a friendly user base that do love to help users.

moving from Sketchup Free to Poser is not to hard. the Free edition saves to Collada (DAE) Format which Pro/2010 reads or you can convert it readily enough.

it's easy to use, plus there's a growing number of videos on Youtube for instruction and a growing number of books.

Sketchup Free and Pro are quite good and have a very "free flowing" build style.  The Pro is $500.00 and the Free version has a proprietary  file format -( a quick google search and I found a few "obj" exporter plugins). - excellent for architecture

Wings3D sorta looks like a toy but underneath is a very powerful modeler that promotes good 3D discipline.  There are a number of plugins available including one that allows you to load in vector graphics and covert them to 3D objects -  excellent for architecture and box-modeling

Silo 2 is my modeler of choice - when using Silo I feel very "connected" to what I'm working on.  However, development has dwindled and that can be discouraging.  Good for architecture and excellent for character creation.

Take care

Okay I have downloaded a sample building and imported it to poser. I see that the mesh has some ugly streaks and if rendered much worse.

This is the render

I was getting into Rhino a while back.  It's not free but the learning curve wasn't too bad.

from the warehouse yes?
ok you've got coplanar faces - thats the streaking. add in the bad technique.

ok you need to remember here - most of the warehouse models are not modeled that well. this is not Sketchup but the modeler... that needs to be tidied up a lot.

So it is possible to model without these faces then? Great!

What is the best technique to apply in order to avoid these streaks?

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 1:38 PM

yup. on the faces with squares, you need, in Sketchup, to select that face and hit Delete. and keep doing it until the face Disappears then press Crtl-Z. it's very easy to stack faces. that causes the squares aka CoPlanar faces. it is easy to correct tho, it's just sloppy modeling.

If you want to model rooms check out Sweet Home 3D: http://www.sweethome3d.com/index.jsp  It's free, quite easy to use and there are versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. The furniture included with it isn't the greatest, quite low poly actually, but you can always use the low poly models as a kind of "stand - in" then use a higher quality model for your final render or animation. The rooms you create can be exported in .OBJ format to use in Poser, Bryce, etc.. You can also import models in .3DS, .OBJ,  DAE (Collada) and .LWS format. As far as modelling furniture, I'd agree with the other recommendations you've been given so far. Good luck and have fun!

Anim8or is free and I have several purchased 3D modelers but I keep coming back to Anim8or because it's very easy to learn and does most of what I need.

have used Anim8tor (it's the only modeler that seems to fit on a floppy...;) It's got some things it does well (check out the lathe tool), but as stated above, don't tie yourself to one (I use WIngs mostly, with an occasional dip into Blender for some tools, even Hexagon, and Topmod (a free modeler, but mainly using topological modeling. Not super easy to learn, but it does a lot of really strange effects)
