Subject: Anybody here upgrade from nvidia geforce 8800 gt ?

ddaydreams ( ) posted Mon, 11 October 2010 at 9:38 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 10:14 PM

My current card is a nvidia geforce 8800 gt and Vue 8.4 Complete

It seems ok but i have nothing newer to compare it to,

I was wondering if some here has upgraded from an nvidia geforce 8800 gt ?

If so then what did you upgrade to? and  do think the upgrade helped much?

NOTE: I don't do games or video. I'm just interested in scene set up working well with OPEN GL 2.1 mode in Vue being able to move things around to compose a scene quickly with plenty of shaders or textures and lighting, giving me a pretty good preview of what the render will look like.

Thanks
Frank

aye I upgraded form 8800GT 512 RAM to 9600GT 1 gig RAM
it did help, not ENORMOUSLY, but very definite improvement :)

thanks for the reply.
I've been trying to think if there is some way to benchmark open gl performance of a graphics card in vue.
I can't think of a way, since everything happens so quick.
Since it's not a true render there is not a timer that tells you how long it took. So you can't time as benchmark.

It's all subjective (hmm it seems like things are dragging around quicker) or (hey this looks a little more real)

Maybe someone with more brains than me can come up with way to benchmark openGL performance in VUE so that cards can be compared for use in Vue.

I tried an app called Fir Mark which tests openGL, but the benchmark scores are all over the place in their database. the scores seems to swing wildly even on the same card,
Not only that but it may have nothing to do with the way Vue use Open GL. The numbers seem pointless.

It also just occurred to me that we can render in openGL not only preview.
So the timer can be used for something involving open GL, but all normal scenes take less than a second to render in open GL.
I don't know if rendertime popup can  be set to detect 100ths or 1000ths of a second.
If it can then that might do the trick to benchmark Open Gl perfomance in Vue
Do you know if the rendertime popup can be set to detect and shows100ths or 1000ths of a second?

Otherwise you would have to make a scene so complex or large that it would take many seconds to complete in openGL, then you have some kind basis for a bench mark.
So that might be a way to benchmark at least openGL speed.

However that would not tell you if it's better looking to not. (you would have to screen shot the old card and new card visual result)

Went from an 8600 GT to a pair of 9800GTXs in SLI and then up to GT240 with 1 GB RAM.  The 240 trumps the 9800s in SLI.

Roughly an nVidia 8800GT = 9800GT = 250GT
The 9800GT was a renamed version of the 8800GT and even some 250GT's were renamed 9800GT's.

Neither the 9600GT nor the GT 240 can really be considered as upgrades as they are both slower than the 8800GT.

Good upgrades would be...

GTX 260 which has a big increase in pixel fill rate, bandwidth and processing power but is limited to OpenGL 3.3 and DirectX 10.0

GTX 460 (1024MB)  which is not only insanely fast but also supports OpenGL 4.1 and DirectX 11. The cheaper 768MB version is not as powerful as it has a narrower memory bus which affects the pixel rate and bandwidth, though you can make big savings if you shop around.

I am still using a 9800GT but if I could afford one I would get the GTX 460.

Yes, I just ordered a GTX 460 1Gb to go with my new i930 quadcore with 12Gb Ram. Both should arrive this week. Should hopefully be a nice step up from the core2 duo with 4Gb.

It basically means "Help yourself" to whatever it's attached to, in that case, OGL benchmarks :)

Thanks to all. I'm probably going for the GTX 460 1Gb sometime after I get V9I.

Quick heads-up after 48h: The GTX 460 works very nicely  in "fixed hardware pipeline" mode with Vue 9. Very fast and stable. In Shader 4 mode however, there are some issues with driver crashes ("... Driver has stopped and recovered..." yeah, right) when I have complex scenes. I have tried the 258.96 release drivers and the 260.89 beta drivers. Both have the same issue. Hopefully one of the next nVidia updates will fix it. I had initially similar issues with my 8800 GTS, but after a couple of driver updates it was running really nicely. So there is hope. Overall I would still recommend the GTX 460.

Thanks for mentioning that.
Please post here if they make a driver sometime that works for your 460 in Shader 4 mode.

with my 8800gt I noticed a nice improvement on there last driver update some time earlier this year I think.

What would the difference be between the 450 and the 460?
