Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 03 12:46 am)
Quote - Yes the Poser 7 library. I do not want an adobe Air or Flash dependent library. I hate it. I WANT the OPTION for the Poser 7 library back please.
I think I actually wouldn't mind having this option. I like the new library, now that it's working in P8 (for me), with the latest SR in place. But I still don't like relying on Flash for this functionality. Given the option, I would favor the old library.
Quote - Vertex editing in the morph tool - with a translate gizmo. It's very hard to tweak morphs when figures are posed (I'm looking at you, buttocks and knees).
Some kind of morph brush functionality which is more like the Wings 3D Tweak tool than Amorphium would be a real boon. Poser generally seems to avoid such precision, however.
I forgot to mention in my previous post that I would really like to see Poser formally embrace the use of ERC. In current versions, ERC can be dropped completely from a figure in a .pz3 save, and I'd like to see tendencies like this removed. ERC may be a user hack, but it's become tremendously important for most of the recent figures I've used, and I think the software should just go ahead and start making it easier to use and less buggy.
Edit: I don't like how this new forum post editor adds three lines to a post every time I hit !

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking. He apologizes for this. He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.
Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below. His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

How about an easy way to centre a camera on an object that is not at 0,0,0. You know, you click an object, press a 'centre view' button and the camera rotates around the selected item. Will the pose camera do that? Hadn't noticed. I tried dolly cameras, and that works fine - for one position.

THIS!! Exactly what I was thinking. Also, for those pointing out there's a translate gizmo, well it doesn't work with BODY, so no translate for the whole figure. It's hard to click too, it has Rotate scale and move in the same gizmo, how about a separate tool for each?

Hmm the insert link/unlink buttons are dead for in Opera & Firefox. The default font is too small... Nice additional features but... Trying to see if simply typing/pasting a link will work.

Hmmm, this is interesting. I'm typing this in html mode, so I can insert whatever characters and tags I want.
Do they work?
We'll soon see!
Edited to add: Yep, seems to work in apply-the-html-hammer mode

is that V4? That's an awesome render Robyn!!!!
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
Well, allow me to add 1 cent, and one cent only.
How about some real nice LOW and MEDIUM poly models for animators?
Very usefull for animations, cloth room, low end machines etc??
A very Simple mapping layout with one 4096x4096 map?
As few material groups as possible.
Something around 10K poly's.
OR???
A Low, a Medium, And a High Poly model that are compatible.
Take the Low Poly head, morph it, subdevide it, and the morph works on the medium poly obj.
Subdevide it again, and it works on the High poly obj.
Alyson was initially build like this, but the compatibility was lost somewhere..
How about an evolution of the hair room.
The current one is not very user friendly (and I am being very polite with this expression :-) )
A build-in UV mapper?
A build in 3D modeler => Something simple and basic like Anim8or.
Morph brush is OK, but to spawn a full body morph each and every time?
A cleaned-up installer file.
The current one spaws a mix of obj, obz, cr2 and crz, etc... on my hard disk.
Keep everything alphabetical, and use meaingfull names.
Eyes 1, Eyes 2, Eyes 3, etc....
breasts&, breasts2.....
Most of these are just some practical changes that make fife easy.
Oh, yeah, the most important: A pre-view window that pre-views what will be rendered..+/- would be fine, thanks.
Best of greetings, Tony

I like the fact that the Morph Tool can work across body parts as of P8... but hate that it generates a Custom Morph dial in every single body part, right down to the final joints in tongue, fingers and toes, as well as a Full Body Morph. How about a dial only in the body parts affected by the new morph?
This might be wishing for the moon, but some form of basic polygon editing (adding, deleting, making something either more hi-res or more lo-res, tapering, bending, beveling, etc.) I know most people use external modeling programs for serious work, but such basic tools are in free, small, simple apps and scripts so shouldn't be a challenge to include in Poser. Those who don't want them can ignore them, as I do the Hair, Cloth, Face and Content rooms.
Along the same lines, and even replacing some of the above, a more intuitive way to get the same results as creating Magnets.
If you subdivide a model (or decimate it) you are going to wreck the UV mapping. Poser isn't a modelling app and (imho) doesn't need any modelling functions really

can't remember if anyone has asked (and I believe they are working on this one) full 64 bit poser for mac.
Also I would love to be able to render to queue from any camera, keeping the same view I see in the window. It switches to some other figure usually and what you see is not what you would get unless you use main camera.

billboards that can face the camera all the time, and also a command to make a certain object face camera.
a very very important one would be hither and yon actually working in render so we don't have to cut holes in things or set up special cameras to take a shot of say a person in a car.
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
It would be nice to click a button on a headlight of a car and turn it into a spotlight as well as still being a model.

Quote - It would be nice to click a button on a headlight of a car and turn it into a spotlight as well as still being a model.
Well now how is Poser going to know if it's the headlight of a car? Why not just parent a spotlight to the headlight and turn it on or off as desired? ;-)
Speaking of headlight though, I'd like to see Poser have a headlight like alot of other apps (like Softfimage) have. It's a light that shines out from the camera so that what you're working on is always illuminated so you can see what you're doing. But it doesn't render or contribute to the scene lighting at all, it's just there so you can see and can be turned on or off as needed.
In Poser if you have a dark scene or darker areas you have to make a light just to be able to clearly see what you're doing.
If not a headlight, it could at least have some sort of overall ambient light you can turn on so you can see what you're doing - again, one that doesn't contribute to the scene lighting, just an overall "helper" light.
Yes you can make your own headlight by parenting a spotlight to your camera and have it pointing in the same direction, and I do that, but I have to remember to turn it off all the time before rendering, and it's easy to forget.
Just sayin' and all. :-)

Well, I have been out of town, but full 64 bit is the most important thing for me.
I have 22 Gigs of ram & can only use 2G. That's what, 3 fully clothed V4?

Make one. I use a point light but you could use a spot or infinite parented to the camera.
Go into the light shader (the material room for the light). Set the Diffuse_Color and Specular_Color to black. Make sure it doesn't cast shadows.
Now you have a light that only shines in preview - not in render. There is no need to ever turn it off.
Mine is part of my preferred scene, and so every time I start Poser it is there.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
How about a way to completely make materials invisible. The transparency does not work as a method of invisibility, since it still casts a slight shadow regardless of settings. At least I cannot find any setting that will make a material completely invisible with no shadow at all.

As I said, I already do use one parented to the camera, but I never would have thought to do as you say with the diffuse and spec.
Thanks man!

I was very disappointed to pay the premium for PP 2010 and discover that the "64-bit" they trumpeted was only for rendering on a Mac. Doubtless I misinterpreted the promotional material before buying. I would have waited for PP 2011 or whatever when presumably they will include full 64-bit for Mac. I sure didn't get any discount from the Windows price for the missing 64-bit.
Speaking of 64-bit rendering, I don't see much benefit unless you are using IBL or a heavy0duty scene in high resolution. For regular medium-res renders without IBL, I haven't seen a speed bump over P8.
well BB says we should be using IDL for everything and IDL definitely needs the 64 bit rendering.

Well that's not Poser, that's just the nature of 64 bit. As I understand it, there is no benefit that 64 bit offers over 32 bit when it comes to normal program operation. The benefit comes when the RAM usage exceeds that which 32 bit can deal with.
So it stands to reason that in a small-to-medium sized scene there will be no speed increase in rendering. It's only once you exceed the RAM limitations of 32 bit that 64 bit increases speed, since Poser (or any app) won't have to use the page file and can use the much faster RAM.

I'd just as soon see it gone, period. We all know where to buy stuff if we want it, and I personally am getting tired of being advertised to all the damn time, everywhere I go.
And that's all it is, really - advertisement, blatant solicitation. There is no altruistic desire to help Poser users, they just want an easy way to get people to their store and IMO, that doesn't belong in software you've paid for.
...
Except that people who paid for it asked for it to be there. There are thousands of users who use the Poser library CP Search directly in Poser, look over what they see while in the library, click one, then buy it. Happens every day. In buying it, they jump into the Content page to finish the transaction.
Even if you believe that successful capitalism is dead, contrary to your beliefs it's not going away. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that what you (and I to be honest) find offensive is offensive to the market as a whole. Every feature you see in Poser is loved by some non-trivial segment of their customer base, even if a large number of us find said feature to be offensive, stupid, useless, or poorly built.
Speaking as the guy who actually built the CP Search GUI, I have to acknowledge that I'm a whore. grin

Off topic, but sort of related ...
I'm not a tree hugger, but I'm completely offended by the amount of junk mail (i.e. wasted paper) that is sent to my home, and by the fact that I have to sift through it to find important things, wasting my time.
I wish all the stupid jerks who buy stuff in response to junk mail would just knock it off. It's so not fair.

Well I understand why it's there and believe me I have no disillusions that it will ever go away. Just felt like tossing my .02 in there about it.
Would be cool if it were an option that could be turned off though.
It's not just Poser of course, and there are a few things in life that just really set me off whenever I have cause to think about them, and the incessant advertising everywhere is one of those things. Yeah I live with it and don't let it ruin my day, but there are times when I just feel like venting. ;-)
I agree with you on the junk mail thing, although I detect a good deal of sarcasm there. ;-)

Is everyone avoiding to mention some DazStudio features who are quite an improvement over Poser? or people really don't even try DazStudio?
Well I do, and there's quite a few things I wish Poser would have too.
Preview Lights ON/OFF, Turn it off and you have an evenly lit scene from all angles, turn it on and you can see the actual lights working in the scene. No parenting, no messing with the material settings, just a button.
Make the move/scale/roate gizmo work with Body to move the figure around. DS shows the distance moved while dragging which is neat. I find it a lot easier to pose and set up a scene in DS for that alone.
Camera controls, the ability to center a figure in frame, the main camera (default camera) can rotate around the targeted object no matter where it is on the scene, Poser's Posing camera sort of work that way, but Props have no posing camera. And the main camera is usless when building a big scene. DS camera handling is really superior.
*PowerPose, I just love it.
There's probably more but I haven't used it for a while, there are as many (or more) things I hate about DazStudio, so I stay with Poser, but when I do try it once in a while, I inmediatly feel the difference in camera works and posing.

That sounds a little scary! My guess, from what you've written here, is that it's going to mimic the Vue/Cornucopia thing. Vue items that you haven't got but are available for purchase from Cornucopia show up in the Vue equivalent of the library. Click on one and you're taken to Cornucopia to hand over your money to get that item.
Is that close?

I think Magnus has a good idea. :D
How about guides for lights? Like a visual representation of spotlight cones and angles and distance start and end.
The light camera can be used easily enough to determine the view angle, but the OpenGL preview for everything else is sometimes so far off base I wonder if Poser isn't just making random changes to my light settings when I hit render just to mess with me. ;-)
Come to think of it, better OpenGL light previews and area lights too.

Yeah I love it when I delelete a figure from the scene and the hair goes flying off in one direction, shoes and clothes and whatever else scattered around.
Then I forget to get rid of some of the now obsolete attachments and 20 minutes later I notice a pair of glasses or a wig just floating in the air in a render.

I would like the scrolling in the library to either have a larger grippy part on the screen ie wider scrollbar, or at least not come off even if you come off with the mouse, because I find myself watching the content skipping past, but I constantly have to remind myself to watch the scrollbar and keep the mouse in the right place. Esther - this is not what the rest of us experience. What you describe is not how it works. Once you grab the thumb, it doesn't matter how far off you move, up-and-down still moves the thumb.
Also I already made the width of the thumb-grab area twice as big as the rest of Poser's scrollbars. The thumb image is thin, but you don't have to grab the image. Grabbing it in the slot works as well.
