Anyone knowe a site or place with vue 9 benchmark file to try with some systems specs posted.

I'd like to Check my old q6600 quad, win 7 64bit system render time results against some of newer i7 system results.

I would appreciate knowing, as well.  I've searched hi & lo for a Vue 9 benchmark test without any luck.

We could pick a couple of the sample scenes and quality levels and do our own set. I have an i7 930 with 12GB of RAM and a dual XEON 5130 with 8Gb (that's an older one).

Works for me :)

But beware because no matter which scene is picked , someone will give a reason why that scene is not the best choice:/

Of course. So, do you have any preferred wrong choices?  How about:

01_Seychelles

07_radiosityRoom

15_CloudShadow

for starters. Those are a nice mix of radiosity, clouds, reflections, etc.

All rendered in Final quality at 800*whatever the default aspect ratio for that scene is?

Just at first glance, the default size for Seychelles is 640* - I think the 800 resolution makes more sense, though.

07_radiosityRoom sounds good.

I assume the 800* is width

I'll try about 12 hours from now and post results, got to do that work thing for now.

Yes, that's why suggested 800. If the image is too small you get too easily in a situation where one core remains stuck on a slow bit. 1600 would be better but it would tie up our systems too long. 800 seemed like a good compromise.

Edit: OK. Let's start with 07_RadiosityRoom. I should eb able to post the results for my two systems tomorow. And yes, I meant 800 width.

Mari-Anne ( ) posted Tue, 14 December 2010 at 10:07 AM

ehh, hmmm - I thought I could just run renders, mark down the times, and that was it.  However, it seems there is a Python Script one is to download.  At least that's the instructions over at Cornucopia for the Vue 8 benchmark test.

Soooo - how do you run a benchmark test for Vue 9? Is there such a thing as a Vue 9 Python Script somewhere?  Or maybe just modify the Vue 8 Python Script?

thd777 ( ) posted Tue, 14 December 2010 at 10:10 AM

No, we are just talking about running the render at the agreed settings and posting the result and machine specs (At least that's what I think). The python script you mention just automates the process and sets a standard. I don't think we need to do this here to get a quick idea about performance.

OK, so this is what you mean?

Seychelles - 5'58"

Room Radiosity - 23"

Cloud Shadow - 2'38"

Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU X980 3.33 GHz - 16 GB RAM - Win 7 64-bit - NVIDIA GeForce  GTX 460

Yes, I think that's what ddaydreams asking for. I'll add my numbers tonight when I get home. Did you run all of them in Final quality ?

Nice system you got there. Mine is just an i7 930. Curious to see how it will stack up.

Yes, all in Final quality and with a width of 800. And yes, it will be interesting to see how a 930 stacks up to a 980.  I can't imagine that it'll be that much of a difference.

Mari-Anne,

Just a quick check: The Radiosity room scene in Vue 9 comes with "re-use indirect lighting" checked. Did you uncheck that for your 28 sec render or was it checked? That can make a significant difference.

I should be able to post my results tomorrow. Your processor has two more cores than mine and is quite a bit faster (Passmark score of 10443 vs. 5833). That should give you a pretty significant speed advatage in Vue (of course there are other factors, too, like RAM speed and so on...).

Hi again TD,

I left it checked.  As a matter of fact, I ran it again just to make sure, and this time the render time was 22 seconds.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Tue, 14 December 2010 at 6:49 PM

Unchecking it will tell Vue to re-calculate the scenes lighting for rendering.  If left checked, just render the scene once and note the time taken.

Doesn't really matter since only one render for a scene is needed anyway for benchmarking.

That is generally true, but not in this specific case. The scene (Radiosity Room from my Vue 9 Infinite) seems to be saved with the indirect lighting map. If you leave it checked, it will NOT perform the prepass and directly go to rendering. Even if you have not rendered it before. Hence the total render time will be faster.

Edit to add: This is actually a very useful feature. If you render an image with GR/GI and then save the scene (with reuse indirect lighting checked) the indirect lighting map will be saved, too. When you load the scene in  again you can continue where you left off without having to recalculate the IDL. I use that quite often to speed things up when wrking on complex scenes.

Mari-Anne ( ) posted Tue, 14 December 2010 at 7:04 PM

If I uncheck Reuse indirect lighting and let it run through a Prepass, the total render time on my computer is 35 seconds.

Yup, that matches my experience. My i930 is definitely a lot slower than  your monster. Seems to be about a factor of close to 2. Makes sense because the Passmark score igives a factor of 1.79. The RadiosityRoom is the worst of the three scenes (It is the fastest to render, but also the worst in direct comparison to your time). Here are my current values:

Seychelles: 10'16"

Cloudshadow: 4'35"

RadiosityRoom: 1'13" with reuse IDL and 1'29" without.

Can you please package your computer in a nice sturdy box and send it over? :thumbupboth:

I created an exact duplicate and it's on its way. 'twill arrive on your door step as a nice Christmas present for all the help you give on various forums

Boy, I am really surprised at the difference.  So is it mainly the GHz that tells you that I have two more cores or is it the X980 - or do you just know 'cause you're a genius?

thd777 ( ) posted Tue, 14 December 2010 at 9:13 PM

Thanks!

The bulk of the difference probably comes from the two extra cores. But the faster clock and potentially RAM and motherboard can also play a role. I am curious how ddaydreams numbers will fit in. The numbers we found are pretty much in line with the Passmark scores which is useful to know because they have a lot of cpu data on their website that can be useful when picking parts for a new system.

I am actually very happy with my current system (Good thing. It's only two month's old...). Much faster than my old duo core and very stable. I have not run into any limits with Vue. I also have four older computers in my mini-rendergarten that help with long renders. Plus I am the patient kind...

I'm pretty happy with my system, as well.  Except, I did run into a lot of crashes in Vue 9, it seemed.  I've been trying to become more familiar with the Function Editor via Vladimir's tutorials but find the settings he is using don't fit Vue 9.  He did indicate he'll rework the FE tutorials for Vue 9 so I'm looking forward to those. But I figured the crashes were due to my inexperience so I didn't feel complaining was justified.

I did have to pay a pretty penny for my computer this last spring but hopefully, it'll be with me for a while, so it's worth it.

Yes, I'm really curious about ddaydreams' render times and specs as well.

That was going to be my next question, if e-on saved the indirect lighting with their scene.  Don't have Vue in front of me right now.

Here are my times for my old workhorse:

Dual Xeon 5130 processors at 2.00 GHz, 8 GB of RAM

Seychelles: 24'01"

Cloudshadow: 10'53"

RadiosityRoom: 2'38" (re-use IDL)

Again, this matches up well with the Passmark scores (2656 for the dual Xeon 5130). If you are wondering what I am referring to, you ca find the processor scores here.
