Subject: Antonia - Opinions?

odf ( ) posted Tue, 04 January 2011 at 6:20 PM

@SaintFox: there is a morph called "Narrow" which should come close. You can see a bit of it in the last render I posted on page 270, but that's not the full strength yet. I suggest you download from https://github.com/odf/Antonia.Polygon/zipball/master, give it a try and if it's not satisfactory, let me know what's missing.

The idea of the system I'm using - which was developed by a very experienced professional animator, by the way - is to have a small set of morphs that can be combined into all kinds of expressions, plus so-called visemes that can be used for lip syncing. So for example, the "Smile" morph simply makes the mouth wider without affecting the eyes. That way, it can be used as an "A" shape as well as, in combination with a squint, to produce a proper smile. That system will take a little bit of experimentation and getting used to, but I believe in the end it will be much easier to use.

Anyway, see what you can do with the "Narrow" in combination with the lip morphs and opening or closing the mouth (which at the moment, you can only do by x-rotating the lower jaw, but I'll add a slider to the head actor later). If you find that the lips need to come forward more, for example, I'll consider morphs that do just that bit.

SaintFox ( ) posted Tue, 04 January 2011 at 6:58 PM

That system is what I use as well to create convincing expression on V4: Avoiding the pre-made "Happy", "Sad" and so on expressions and combining the tiny bits instead. Looks far more natural. I will try out the morphs as soon as possible (during the next days) and try to achieve a "Boo-boo-bi-doo" LOL

I'm not always right, but my mistakes are more interesting!

And I am not strange, I am Limited Edition!

Ah yes, V4 has this stuff as well. I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw that. Of course then DAZ had to muddle everything up by adding pre-made expressions as well.

Anyway, Jason Osipa's book also introduces a number of rigs for manipulating expressions without having to dial every morph individually. He uses two-dimensional sliders, though, which we don't have. But I was thinking about trying to emulate a bit of what he did, such as for example having a single slider for "Smile/Frown", where positive values would trigger the smile and negative ones the frown. That would be in addition to and separate from the low-level sliders that manipulate the morphs directly.

But I guess that can wait until version 1.1. And I'll definitely leave the making of canned expressions to the third-party vendors.

...hehe... if now someone calls volunteers to the front I will take a modest step aside so that the volunteers can flock forward LOL I am not good at all with manipulating the eyesocket and likewise things where's something behind. In most cases I end up with the figure holding one eye or it's teeth in the hand, looking at me in a reproachful way 😉

@ odf: I remember that you were working on some new JCMs for deep thigh bends.  Were these cancelled, or are they something which will be included in an update?  😕

I'm liking the expressions!  :woot:

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

@saintfox: Not every piece of clothing need to be is suitable for all purposes. MFD was selected for being well supported with textures and having a lot of morphs for the fitting. The skirt is one object, the hip, and therefore seated/laying down positions can be dealt with easily in the cloth room.

@odf: Do you have the full title of the book and ISBN number maybe?

I don't remember that. Maybe I speculated about new thigh JCMs, but I never actually worked on them. I'd love to make better JCMs at some point, but with the existing tools, I find it just too painful. So unfortunately, the answer is no to both.

It's so nice that progress is being made.

I was doing work on eyes last night and was wondering if Antonia has a correct corneal bulge? V4 doesn't, her cornea by default is flat! It's surprising what a difference adjusting that made.

Regarding clothing I guess we'll have to be patient...

@bagoas: I know and I did so but on the other hand found that, despite the fact that dynamic cloth is part of Poser since version 5, the option to tame a stubborn skirt with the cloth room is still new to a majority of users. Meanwhile I have the link to the matching tutorial posted here at Rendo ready for copy and paste 😉

That's the Ersa hair by 3Dream - I bought it especially for the use with Toni as I had the feeling that she would get a completely new look with it. And yes!! Of course I had to tweak the size and position a bit (and did it not very professional).

@SaintFox:

I think the majority of Poser users hardly scratch the surfce of what Poser can do. For all purposes and intentions: I do not exclude myself from that majority. I would never have realized this was possible if I had not, after 5 years or so of using Poser stumbled upon a piece of content with conforming bodice and dynamic skirt.

I think fewer even know you can actually 'clothify' body parts. I use that every now and then to get a realistic flexing of the breasts when the figure is leaning forward or when the breast is pressed by an arm or so. It takes some experimenting with stiffness, cloth weight and extent of constraints to get good results. I was triggerd by the 'clothify body part' option in the selection dialog.

The cloth room can be very useful for developing or tweaking content, but it is really annoying that you have no real access to control of key cloth room simulation parameters like gravity, and that the flexural properties of the dynamic cloth groups are so limited in range.

SaintFox ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2011 at 5:49 PM

I think that it's pretty normal that it takes a while to explore the possibilities of complex software like 3d-programs and high-and grafic softwares are - and my father uses to say that when a new version of Photoshop is released he did explore at most half of the features his actual version has 😉 But sometimes I am amazed how scared people are about experimenting with what they bought for lots of money as the good thing about software is that you can't destroy it by using it (at least not so much that you can't restore it by re-installing...).

And again I've learnt something - clothifying bodyparts?!?! This sounds amazing, and beside the option to maybe achieve a convincing look when a female figure wraps it's arms around the upper torso I begin to ponder over hair (I am talking about propped or figure-hair, not dynamic hair)... do you have any experience with this? Since years I long for the nice and realistic hairstyle that is able to flow over a surface (sofa, bed, ground) or follow a movement. Dynamic hair is nice but I hardly found one that looks realistic (while it gives a very fine fur on clothes).

In the right hands (operative words, and I don't claim to have those "right hands"), dynamic hair looks incomparably more realistic than anything else available.

For example of "in the right hands," be sure to check out Carodan's gallery here at Rendo. He posted some nice examples in a dynamic hair renders thread I had going a while back; look a bit more than halfway down this page: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2790278&page=2

But I'm getting us off-topic... my bad. (Although for me if you're gonna go with dynamics, go all the way, both hair and cloth.)

I had a look and say yes, you are right - and no, you're not LOL Maybe I should have been more specific: As long as you're after a pretty sleek look without updo's, tails and other things that require bands, clips or buckles the results are more than convincing, they can be perfect! But as soon as you want a ponytail, realistic soft curls, an up do with single strands that move I did not see nor achieve a believable result so far. But I am more than open for examples that show me that it can be done - and definitly willing to give it another try!

And no, it's not sooo off topic because a figure that bends as good as Antonia deserves hairstyles that fit into her active live with all those jumps, saltos and bend-forwards 😉

The interesting thing is that the cloth room has principles that I'm assuming could be incorporated by Smith Micro into the Hair Room (or maybe I'm being optimistic). I.e. in the cloth room, you can have constrained groups etc etc.

As it is though, you could make a pony tail in the hair room now, you just couldn't put a band on it. AFAIK. Hmm.

When clothifying a body part, the vertices welded to the adjacent body parts are automatically added to the _constrained group, thus ensuring that the connection remains intact.

Indeed the cloth room could be used for hair. Transmapped hair is nothing else than a veil or a hood with a hair texture instead of a cloth texture. I never tried it, but I think you could make transmapped hair realistically be 'squeezed' between a hat and the head.

By the way: strand hair can be manipulated using magnets and other deformers. Yuo an use this to generate the effect of pins and bands. In the basis it is all about moving vertices around. Whether these are used for geometric definition of splines(hair), surfaces carrying textures (clothing, props, figures) or solids (not supported by Poser) should make no difference.

The problem, and the obfuscation, comes from the way this is all packed and bundled in manipulation tools. The application designers must strike a balance between flexibility (steel learning curve, high level abstraction thinking), and conveinience of use for most common tasks. I would love to see flexibility and transparancy at the level of for example the  PovRay scene definition language, in which vertices, normals, colors, translations, rotations, scales and if you want box objects have the same definition: a tupel of 3 float numbers. I realize however that working on that level you can not make a practical application for the general public (which Poser is) and do things like dynamic clothing.  One has to make choices. Those who ever were in a jetplane and saw right below their own home which they left 4 hours before in a hurry to get to the airport in time to catch that flight will understand. It is our own fault. We do not have a main airport in our backyard.

Does Antonia's textures work with Poser 6 ... and what are the differences between texture maps and Antonia releases? I want to match them up  properly and am a bit confused.

By the way she is amazing from the images I see here.

But since I'm not quite finished with the expression morphs yet, I can't guarantee that it will happen this month. Definitely not on the 11th. It could be late January or early February, depending on progress. Once I have completed the work and am happy with it, I'll upload a "release candidate" and set a date for the official release.

BlueEcho: Shouldn't it be enough to link to the official site with the words "Pick up the most recent/actual version here"? You could ask the marketplace-staff if this is acceptable.

About dynamic hair and things: Yes, you are right - from the viewpoint of a merchant we either can create with and for high end applications and in the end work (almost) for our own pleasure or create things that are easy to learn and use but have limits. So at the moment all I can do is pushing the envelope 😉

...and about pageviews: I am blind but would like to have fun with it as well. So where may I find it?

I'd use shortish hair, like Paris65 by Fabiana. That way, you have little to mess with. Push  your hat down until it is sitting right, and don't worry about the hair-pokethrough. With your morphing tool (brush):

Click on Create tab

Set it on push

Set magnitude to .02

Twirl your camera around until you are looking squarely at the hair poking through the hat.

On my new PC, the brush acts a lot faster, so tailor your settings to your system. You might want to set magnitude higher if it's all taking too long.

Be aware that where the crown meets the brim, excess pushing of hair is going to result in visible bald spots under that hat.

Hope this all sort-of makes sense. Two things to remember: 1 start the brush action with the highlight over the mesh you want to act on and 2. hold down the shift key to keep focus on that mesh (works for the most part) 😄
