Subject: Poser2010 Runtime file names suddenly displaying vertically!

JAG ( ) posted Wed, 17 August 2011 at 1:28 AM · edited Fri, 20 December 2024 at 11:58 PM

HELP!  WTF...does anybody know what would cause this?  I'm working fine and all at once I look over and my file names in my runtime directory are randomly displaying the name vertically...one letter on each line till after four, it disappears.  This is not normal.  Haven't installed anything new recently...and no other problems on any other system or programs.  I had poser running fine...then all at once...random files doing weird things.  Nothing else wrong...just file names displaying weird.  You go in deeper and come back out...and more files corrupt.  I have shut down, rebooted, restarted, and even reinstalled Poser...and bam...right back at it...same thing again.

I'm suspecting a graphics related issue here rather than Poser...but does anybody know for sure...am I the only goob this has happened to?

I had problems with my library too. Not the same as your problem though.  However, maybe the fix is the same.  See my post towards the end where I provide the reply from Smith Micro.

Thanks for the pointer...but I think I might have figured it out...I'm hoping.  I downloaded and installed Adobe MUSE beta two days ago and in the installation, they slipped a new version of Adobe Air by me.  I had no clue that Air was what made the runtime directory work.  Anyways, when I first reinstalled Poser, it was detecting new version of Air and not rewriting it.  After a while I figured it had to have been something I installed...and so I just uninstalled Muse and Air...then my runtime wouldn't work at all.  I got a "you need adobe air" message when Poser loaded.  So I decided to reinstall Poser again.  During the process of install, I noted it installed AIR components.  Upon the reinstall completion, the runtime appears to be working normal again.  I am reassociating my Runtimes now and I'm hoping none of them still have components of the new air.  If not, I think it might fix it.  Apparently the newest Air version is having issues with P2010.  I will notify SM if this ends up being an absolute.  I'm still copying files at the moment.  Fingers crossed.

Odd that your problems revolved around Flash...another Adobe product.  Go figure.

And for those of you wondering...don't bother with Muse.  It's the lamest thing Adobe has ever done.  And certainly not worth the problems with Poser.

I'm seeing exactly the same thing since yesterday. Adobe Air updated itself sometime yesterday and maybe (i'm not sure) I saw it after that.

Windows 7, 64-bit. PoserPro2010, 8.03.11916 both the 64- and 32-bit version on the same computer.

Had this happen recently as well.  Have a fix:

Roll back from Adobe AIR 2.7.1 to 2.6 for now. (Uninstall and reinstall 2.6 AIR)

Archived Adobe AIR Versions are here:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/853/cpsid_85304.html

You can also turn off  the Adobe AIR update checker to stay on 2.6:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403175.html

Link is at 3rd "Q:" on the page.  You have to install AIR first before running the *.air application.

.

Thank you, Netherworks! That solved the problem. 😄

This is strange.  I updated and didn't have a problem.  Perhaps this is an issue if you have an older operating system?  I'm running Windows 7 and Poser Pro 2010 is running perfectly.

FYI since I saw a couple comments that indicate people are troubled by not understanding why this or that happens with Flash or AIR.

The Library is implemented in Flash or AIR. Which you have depends on what you have:

Anime Studio - Flash

Poser 8 - Flash

Poser Pro 2010 32-bit - Flash (embedded dockable version) or AIR (external window version)

Poser Pro 2010 64-bit - AIR (external window version)

Poser Debut - Flash

All libraries are the same code, just deployed differently with different parameters. Each year, more features are added to that code base.

At the time PP2010 was released, there wasn't any 64-bit Flash, so that was the only way to keep the same code base - AIR.

I wrote the new library. When you insult it, you insult me. I was very sincere when I wrote it.

A frequent question/statement is made, something like "What were they thinking using Flash" with the subtext (intentional or not) being "Ted is an idiot. Why?" This position generally assumes that a self-contained implementation was possible, could be done in time, and would be affordable. This assumption is based on incomplete knowledge of engineering and the product requirements, and a failure to understand economics, as well as the product calendar at the time.

  1. I am not an idiot. I know how to make a design choice based on trade-offs. You may not know the trade-offs and requirements, so your assessment can easily come out different than mine. All that means is you don't know what led to the decision, while I do. Doesn't mean either of us is stupid.

  2. SM wanted ONE new content management system for all its graphics products, one that could evolve and be cross-platform, and would not require a complete rewrite of Anime Studio.

  3. SM did not want to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for this.

P9 and PP 2012 use the same system, with some more improvements.

Now you know why. Spread the word. Or not - just understand I'm not going to keep defending the choice.

Note also that for those willing to pay, there are several excellent 3rd-party alternatives.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

I had this happen also, I sent in a ticket and sm forwarded all info on to adobe because it happened right after the air updated.

JAG ( ) posted Wed, 17 August 2011 at 8:54 PM

Ted is right...the problem isn't with Poser.  I fricking love my external runtime window...got it on a second monitor in fact.  It made my workflow so much better.  This current issue is with Adobe Air updater.  Air is messed up...not Poser.  And just so everyone knows, Ted also emailed me about this this very morning less than 12 hours after I mentioned it to him, and he's the coolest cat out there who had anything to do with SM at all.  He is our guru...whoever peeved on him needs to apologize.

Thanks for posting Ted.  As always, your unending efforts and advice saves us all.

Using 3rd party/off-the shelf stuff is simply a fact of life in development. Even if you have the expertise to write everything from scratch, the tradeoff in development time/cost usually isn't worth it. Trying to do it for multiple platforms is even more difficult. There's also the personnel factor. If the person who wrote the custom code disappears, someonne else has to try to figure it out - often a daunting task. Finding someone who is familiar with the 3rd party components is probably going to be easier. For some of same reasons that few people bake cakes from scratch these days, few people are going to roll their own media player etc. to put in an application unless their needs are pretty unique. The downside is that you're always vulnerable to changes in the outside components/frameworks etc. you're using. Even the code you write yourself is still subject to changes/patches to the operating system. Short of writing everything in machine code, I don't see a way around some level of dependency - and even then, you have to hope that Intel doesn't screw you :-)

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Thu, 18 August 2011 at 9:53 AM

as an experiment.. what happens if you remove an affected runtime then readd it?

JAG ( ) posted Thu, 18 August 2011 at 12:18 PM · edited Thu, 18 August 2011 at 12:26 PM

The problem isn't with your runtime.  You don't need to remove or uninstall it.  To fix this problem, all you need to do is this:

  1. Use windows ADD/REMOVE software - remove Adobe Air

  2. Reboot your system

  3. Download and install Adobe Air 2.6 version from here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/853/cpsid_85304.html

  4. Restart Poser after Air is successfully installed.

  5. Last but not least, archive this installer program in case Adobe pulls it down later as it may take a while for SM to issue a patch for this problem.  And you might also want to send them a "thank you" for issuing updates that download without your approval and for tinkering with their plugins without concern for how it might affect other dependent software...oh, and for freaking me the crap out.

And just to clarify, if this happens to your Runtime/Library - there's nothing wrong wit it.  The problem lies with the way new Adobe Air plugins [which downloaded to your system automatically without your knowledge] are working with Poser Library program.  Air is what enables the library program to operate externally or aside from Poser's main program.  In other words, to simplify it, Poser and Poser Library are two separate programs that run at the same time on your system and either can operate independent of the other...or work together.  Air is the plugin, sort of, that makes the Library program work on it's own.  Air has been altered last week, and it now causes the Library program to display file names screwy.  But the Library program and the Runtime directories and files associated with it are not damaged and there is nothing wrong with them in any way.

Just uninstall the new air...and reinstall an older version and all will work again.

If you've already uninstalled a runtime directory, it's not contaminated or damaged and you should be able to reinstall it just fine.

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Thu, 18 August 2011 at 12:51 PM

ok miss the point

I was not saying it was the runtime. I was wondering if readding it would fix it. just a simple experiment.

you know, just incase that simply fixes it instead of doing a remove, downgrade dance....

ssteph ( ) posted Mon, 05 September 2011 at 10:02 AM

I have rolled back to AIR 2.6 and have prevented updates sooo...

anyone know if there is an update/fix for this problem yet?

One more thing..... I presume if no fix/update the problem

will be the same with Posr Pro 2012?

I am experiencing the same vertical names of library items in my Poser 8 and Poser Pro 2010, but when I move the slider to change the thumbnail preview size, the filenames change to horizontal again.  I don't have a big issue with this except that sometimes its distracting.
