Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 09 3:34 pm)
Yes much improved even Poser 9 is much faster with IDL than 8 ever was.
I am doing a render with IDL and Subsurface scattering and is very cool.
You know you enjoy 3D Art when you realize that your life is a piece of 3D Art. :)

I agree. I haven't done any comparisons but I'm rendering transmapped hair that PP2010 choked on with 2 bounces. PP2012 renders it easily with 4 bounces. I´m a happy camper ;)
Ues, the render speed is great, and the library speed is also super, as if you was in a windows folder.
I'm guessing these improvements are mostly seen by folks with 64 bit and/or lots of cores (I'm still on 32 bit, and my quad core is a long-in-the-tooth Q6600).

Hm so far I'm not impressed by the render speed. Must have been too long since I last rendered anything...
Or maybe I had my settings all wrong. Not too impressed with the quality, either. I got some odd artifacts on a shadow...
But I'll try again with other settings and see if it helps :)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
the other thing that is way faster now is scrolling in the parameters dials when I have all the V4 morphs opened to view them all.
That used to be so slow previously that it was almost unusuable for me.
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
Please; when making comments state your Poser version and OS.
Please.

Both Poser9 AND PP2012 got way faster but the increase is more visible in PP2012 due to the 64 bit structure.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Any chain.
Be it CPU, RAM, OS, motherboard, or Poser version.
But both Posers got a stong health injection LOL.
When comparing render speeds between versions, be sure to use the same render settings.
Also, textures are smart catched...... reducing load times.

I mentioned this over at RDNA, but I ran some speed tests last night using unfinished scenes I'd created last year. Depending on the scene, I was getting about a third better performance in the rendering (64 bit Win 7, PP2010 and 2012), but what was interesting was one scene that took longer to render in PP2012. When you look at it, however, even with the same number of IDL samples it came out significantly better than the same scene rendered in PP2010. When I cut the number of IDL samples in half and re-rendered in PP2012, the two PP2012 renders were pretty much indistinguishable but I was back to a render that only took 2/3rds the time as in PP2010.
Along the lines Keith discusses, you can work with soft reflections and soft refractions now, which are faster than they used to be at same settings and the quality higher than it used to be at same settings.
If you decrease the quality to match what used to be produced, it is so much faster you might think you have 64 cores.
There are an extraordinary number of real life materials where some blurred reflection makes a huge difference in realism. I'm revisiting a ton of materials.
A classic is leather.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

That's great to hear - the parameter dials in PP2010 have averaged about 5-10 seconds just to change focus when moving from one to another - it's really slowed down my productivity, not to mention spoiled many a mood ;).
I decided to try a few test renders in Poser 2012. This isn't a completely fair comparison because I am comparing Poser Pro 2012 (64-bit) with Poser 7 (32 bit).
All renders were done on the same machine (Intel i7-2600 with 16GB RAM).
I set up the scene in Poser 7 and used the same render settings in Poser Pro 2012. The scene was a simple portrait shot of V4, Koz Bob Hair and the S3 "Astrid" texture.
I ran the renders three times each too see how much effect texture caching had on the render time. Each render was timed from pressing "Render" until the render progress bar disappeared.
P7 Render 1: 94 sec
P7 Render 2: 74 sec
P7 Render 3: 74 sec
Poser Pro 2012 Render 1: 40 sec
Poser Pro 2012 Render 2: 25 sec
Poser Pro 2012 Render 3: 24 sec
The quality of the renders from the two different versions were almost identical due to using the same render settings.
With the texture caching it is rendering in about 1/3 of the time, so I'm very pleased with the new version.

Quote - No? not with access to more RAM?
if you were running out of RAM before, you were running out of RAM and the render crashed, so in that sense yes, it'd be faster than "never".
and do you know you can just drag a prop from your finder folder into poser and it works?
Love esther

Did you get that fixed? I'm not too impressed by the PP2012 slow renders either (64 bit) and the forever it takes to get back to Preview mode when I click Preview after a render. It's probably down to the stock render settings, does anyone have suggestions for speeding it up?
try adjusting texture cachiing in preferences?
tick render in separate processes.

I just did a test render. M4, V4, both with transmapped hair, their clothing, and a complete parking structure loaded. Last night it took 2 1/2 hours to do an IDL render under PP2010. This morning, the same PZ3 rendered in under 10 minutes using PP2012!!!!!!!
WOW!
