Subject: Texture on refracted glass?

Hey all, I'm trying to get a texture to show up on glass in Poser (6). Any idea how I can do it? Here's a render from Daz Studio which shows what I want, and my material settings in Poser. It's slightly complicated by the inner 'contents' material also being a refractive liquid. (This is a perfume bottle). That's why I don't use the standard Poser refraction settings. I've tried the Maths and Blender nodes, but I'm no expert with them, so I was just guessing. TIA mac

Can you ship me the prop and the texture map for the "luna"? It's easier for me to just put it on there for you. Otherwise I have to ask you a bunch of questions.

In general, what you're trying to do here is modulate the Refraction. You want to have a mask for letters. Then you put that into a Blender. On the two inputs, you connect the two materials. For example, it could be glass and metal, or glass and paint.

A clear glass shader can be just one node - Fresnel. A colored glass would be more complicated.

If the letters are to be metal, we can use just reflection for that. If plastic or paint, it would need to be a bit more.

Also, if the logo is inside the glass, or on the outside, we would handle that a bit differently.

I can assemble all of these for you in minutes. Give me a link or something in a PM.

Be really keen to see the results... i.e., the shader (hint-hint) 😄

BB's going to take a look at it for me. When he's finished, (assuming it's ok with him), I'll post the setup here for anyone else who needs it. mac

I am rendering now, but I'm wondering if I've gone too far in render time.

Are you looking for fast render times? Because you have the glass and the liquid, the raytrace bounces are a minimum of 4, and you really need 6 to get all the nooks and crannies in the geometry. This is a long render. On my machine it is around 5 to 10 minutes for a medium size rendering where the bottle is the main subject.

If it's just going to be filler content and show up as a small object, it is probably not so long.

For a background object, maybe I'd go with transparency instead of refraction.

I don't know - when I post the render you can judge yourself if it is worth it.

I can promise you this, though - nobody will have a better looking perfume prop than you.

maclean,

Did I try to help you years ago with your Bar Italia set? I recall working on a set like that and the refractions were so many through all those bits of glass and mirror that the render time was impossible.

I had a bad setting somewhere. Render time was 3 minutes 38 seconds for this, with 5 bounces.

Wow! That looks terrific, BB! Exactly what I'm after. The render time should be as short as possible, but since it's a product for sale, I can't say how it would be used. I imagine a lot of people would use pieces of the pack as background objects, but some might want to do product photography-style shots, especially with these being beauty products, which tend to look good in still lifes. A result like that justifies a longer render time, but 3' 38" is more than acceptable. Re Bar Italia - I honestly can't remember. I do know that I had a lot of trouble with it, and one member (The Retired Sailor) who was beta-testing it, helped out with settings. In fact, I think he was the one who came up with the mix of Anisotropic/Refract nodes that I still use. I bet he picked your brain though. LOL. Re nodes - You mentioned Fresnel. Every time I use that, I get really long render times, even dropping the quality down, (I generally use an RT bounce of 4 - 6). That's why I've tended to avoid it. Great work! mac

Right well that's 3:38 in PP 2012. Who knows how it will behave in Poser 6.

I have to simplify the shader as I prototyped using a really big one that you don't need - has a billion options.

Cool. Don't panic over it. I'm in absolutely no hurry. Btw, I also have P9, but I mostly test in P6 so I can take into account users who may not have the latest software. mac

Well, I didn't hear back from BB, but I've figured out the settings anyway. So here they are for anyone who's interested.

Maybe not as good as BB would do, but the product's finished now and I need to upload it.

Here's a quick render. I still need to make real textures - one for each bottle, in the correct sizes and with proper text. This is still just a test texture.

Thanks for the compliment, but these are pretty simple settings. I have a feeling that BB's would be a lot more impressive than mine.

I just bash away at it till I get something close. LOL.

Simple is good -- these work a treat! Hope eventually to see these items as freebies or in the MP: I'd be getting them... they are definitely worth having, Maclean. Well done. 😄

what about a spray of mist coming out of the bottle for a character in a scene using the perfume?
