Well, that's the next conundrum: iPhone with Siri, or utter coolness of Android? Then there are the providers.... when did life get so complicated?

Here, take all my money. Must have pretty shiny toys...

Quote - I have a Nook Color. I love it. Of course I rooted that sucker about 5 minutes after it arrived...lmao. I was respectful enough to look at the software it shipped with. For about a minute...lol. Right now, it's all Android (Gingerbread). Where else was I gonna get a tablet for 129 bucks and free shipping? LOL

edit: btw, I think there's a CM7 mod for the Kindle Fire as well :P LOL

Helluva price for a tablet. Can't say as that I blame you. 😄

There are also mods for the regular Kindles. My son modded my daughter-in-law's Kindle almost the second he bought it for her. I'm not particularly interested, but then again you're talking to the person who DIDN'T root her Android phone! In the geek world (which I proudly admit to being a part of) that's considered HERESY!

You beat me too it! A popular endless argument on Photo forums! I have a CANON Digital SLR 40D with CANON lenses- but also have a Nikon CoolPix 8100S. I recently stopped talking with myself over the bitter arguments!  Having both was tearing me apart.:-)

Oooh-but the 60D does not have the mag alloy body-and cannot be used as a hammer!

Yes, Eric-but you got a sore neck lugging the heavy thing with a heavy L lens around-so the 60D would get more use if you had it! AND it has a high quality movie mode! Nuh uh! Ya huh! OH yeah? But you always carry the NIKON 8100S because it will fit in a large pocket! Sorry- had a another three way argument with myself. I'm better now- really! :-)

Could it be that it does not really matter-as long as one is satisfied with the pictures they take? Nah!

Quote - oh man, not Nikon vs Canon !!!! in the name of sweet mercy not that!! (I loves me my Canon 60D  )

Next it'll be primes vs zooms

And that, my friends, sums it all up. It's the end results that matter, not which program we get to render our digital Barbies in. Grant you, which digital Barbie we can use is now linked with which program we can use, but that works for both sides of the coin. We can either throw shit fits, or take that energy and back developers (or become developers ourselves) who will make great digital Barbies (and hopefully Kens) for our respective programs.

Wait, that wasn't about cameras!

Going for a wild-wild-wild guess, I would say Poser 10 by 2014????

I see people saying that the arguing and hostility has always been present here.

Well, maybe. But it has gotten so much worse.

I think I joined Renderosity back in 2003, but didn't actually post anything until about 2 years later. Why?  Because I had such a bad experience on other forums in another type of community that I decided I was going to watch and wait and read and see how people acted and reacted on the next forum I joined.  So I lurked for about 2 years sizing up this site and its forums before getting up the nerve to actually make a post.

The reason I decided to start posting is because from what I saw people were nice, friendly and helpful. But most of all, they were courteous and I didn't see much if any arguing going on. Trust me, had it been like it is today, I never would have started posting here.

I have enough conflict in my life, and there is so much conflict in the world, that last thing I want when I'm spending my down time is more conflict.

I still like this site a great deal and count many here friends beyond the internet. However, when I want to post in a forum, I find myself posting elsewhere and when I am here, other than posting in the odd thread to help a newbie or answer a question, I spend my time here in Chat where it's fun and relaxing.

If the chat goes away, I'm likely to too because since the forums are so tense, my enjoyment for Renderosity is purely chat room related.

I agree, the 10 inch is just too big and the 7 inch is perfect ;). And Calibre is the best darn thing since sliced bread!! I'm in it every day, converting something or other so I can read it on the tablet :P. It's awesome :).

Hubby has an iPad and while it's really beautiful and nicer for playing games, the 7 inch is what you want to read on. Perfect in one hand :).

Ok, I've heard about all the fiddling with phones, unlocking, at least, but I have no idea what you guys are talking about. What does it result in, and how easy is it to break the phone permanently by doing it? (From the School of Ma Bell, when all phones were black, and they were hard-wired into walls.)

And all these _pad things just confuse me. They play games, they download books, and what else? Sort of like a giant phone, but with no keypad, and don't make calls? I think I need one, but I don't know why!

In my Bryce days, I was actually afraid of Renderosity. If you weren't brilliant, and didn't sport elephant hide, they'd eat you alive... or so I was told.

LaurieA ( ) posted Fri, 30 December 2011 at 10:45 AM · edited Fri, 30 December 2011 at 10:51 AM

They play games, manage your finances, count calories, allow you to read, get on the internet, play movies and everything in between ;). We have a subscription to Netflix and it plays beautifully on the Nook Color, as well as hubby's phone. You can get bluetooth keyboards for them if you so desire - I will agree I do hate typing on that soft keyboard...lol. Even so I can chat on YahooMessenger or AIM if I want. It does a lot that my computer will do (within reason) but doesn't have nearly the "oomph" LOL.

The main reason for rooting a phone (which would likely be running Android anway) would be to get rid of all the software that the cell phone companies load on the phone that you can't get rid of and to enable features that the cell phone companies block. It WILL void your warranty (as it will on any device, including my Nook Color) - however some phones are very easy to "brick" (or render a useless paperweight) if you don't follow instructions for rooting to the letter. The only phone I'm aware of that's nearly impossible to brick is, strangely enough, an iPhone...lol. Just hook it up to iTunes and voila! - you have your original phone back ;).

As for Renderosity, I've never been afraid of the place. I have a thick skin and can usually give back what I get (although not as glibly..lol). But the outright pettiness and nastiness does get to me by a group that is supposed to be adults. It just shouldn't happen. Only at RO can a group fight over two programs that do essentially the same thing. I don't ever recall Wings3D users fighting with Blender users or Photoshop users fighting with Painter or GIMP users. It's stupid. It's more likely that those people use Blender AND Wings or Photoshop AND Painter. Just like a lot of ppl use Poser AND DS.

vintorix ( ) posted Fri, 30 December 2011 at 11:55 AM

There is great things ahead and both Poser and Daz users are perfectly poised for the next great leap. 2012 is going to be the year of animation and low cost motion capture (Kinetic etc). Poser and Daz begs to be bundled with programs like Marvelous Designer and the like that enables you to own your own personal film studio at your desktop with free actors. The program that does this first and best will be the winner, genesis has nothing to do with it. Daz seem to have lost the ball they have still not released the SDK for DS4.

Again though, the fights are not really over the programs themselves. The fights are always over what DAZ does in some form.

I used both Poser and Studio and enjoyed them both. I'd never say that Poser can't make art as well as Studio can. The software has never really been the issue, it's either personal issues or concerns about content support.

I just never understood so much weeping and gnashing of teeth over the fact that ppl wouldn't be able to spend their money anymore Wouldn't that just give you more incentive to use what you've already bought - that you've never used?

I've never been much for "keeping up with the Joneses"...lol. It's a losing battle :P. I can make my own stuff and ensure that my images look different than others images do. Besides, I spend more time in other programs prepping stuff for Poser than I spend IN Poser these days ;).

You'd think so, but you end up wanting to just 'collect' stuff too...I see new things and think "ooh, maybe someday I could use that in a render..."   I've probably used about 5% of what I've bought in actual renders (which seems to be pretty common among us, lol).   ;)

Thanks, Laurie, I'll remember that tip about the iPhone. It's silly, because I hate talking on the phone, and all that thumb typing makes me twitch, but I still feel the need for one of the darned things. I had an ancient one, and used it mostly as a pocket watch.

Yay! Camera shipped today, and should be here Monday or Tuesday! (If the delivery service doesn't pitch it on the roof or something.)

You know, maybe all this character and clothing slow down is a good thing. Maybe, and it's a stretch, people will be motivated to make their own. Personally, I'd rather see something not so technically perfect, but original, than the same outfits and faces over and over...

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

Phones...

I hate phones of any description.  Or rather, the intrusive nature of phones and people's assumptions that I have nothing better to do than answer the phone and chat about some trivial bollocks or other.  My phone is for my convenience, nobody else's.  I love talking with friends but I don't see the constant need to blog every aspect of my life.  So, yes I have a cell phone but the battery's flat and it's not been charged for weeks.

I also take issue with non stop texting.  I don't care if people text til their thumbs fall off but not when it intrudes into my time, conversations or other aspects of my life.  In any case, experience has taught me if you have anything important to communicate, texting is not the way to do it.  It's too vague, too back and forth.  Better to call someone and ask outright.

Cameras...

I have an Olympus E300 which is about 8 years old and man, is that ever a great camera.  Sadly, I don't get enough time to experiment with it and most of my photography these days consists of family gatherings and the children.  No bad thing, photos of the little ones, but I hope to be able to stretch out creatively again.

Internet...

You guys should see some of the musician's forums if you want to see what a real war zone is like.  Harmony Central had some of the worst fighting and trolling I have ever seen.  You should see the Gibson v Fender fights or some of the amp fights for spectacular fireworks.  Having both Gibson and Fender, I don't get drawn into 'em. :)  I left there some years ago and I don't miss it one bit.  Now I'm a member of a closed (by invitation only) musician's site and it's so much better.

Finally, I don't go to any forum looking for a fight, argument or to act like some kind of tough guy.  Seen enough internet tough guys and trolls to last me a lifetime.  Like Acadia, I come here for information and a bit of light hearted fun.  Also like Acadia, I've had more than enough conflict in my life without getting embroiled in more.

Last year, my Dad was dying of cancer and sometimes reading the forums I'd think, "You pathetic bastards, whining about x y and z.  You should see what real problems are".  Of course, I never voiced this, being the nice guy that I am. :)  And yes, my Dad dealt with his illness with courage and dignity.  Not once did he whine, cry or complain, right up to his dying day.  A fine example and one which helps me keep everything else in perspective.

Kindles, iPads, Droids, iPhones...you are all a bunch of whimps....

Now this is a real phone. Nicknamed the Motorola Brick. Add a 2800mah battery (which you needed to make the thing last a full day with a reasonable amount of calls and added like 3 more inches to the depth of the phone form factor) and the thing weighed more then a standard brick. You never left it behind in a Taxi. One, it couldn't just disappear into the seams of the seat. Two, as you stepped out of a Taxi, you instantly noticed that something was missing, since the arm you were carrying the phone with wasn't being stretched longer by the weight. You want a phone get a real one. You want a toy, well then buy a toy!

Try this with your freaking toy phone. Drop it off the top of a 5 story high building and see what happens. Your toy phone will break into a billion peices. My Brick which I still have sitting on my desk at work, will leave at least a 5 foot deep crater and still work. When you can match that, let me know.

Plus if you wanted to pack the thing away for an important meeting you had to carry it in a real hard brief case because you needed the hard handle to support the weight. Not some cheesy peice of soft luggage.

Freaking kids and their toys!

The new ones tend to stop working after you've dropped 'em in the toilet. My neice found that out real quick. The only saving grace was that she dropped it after a flush and wasn't afraid to dive in after it...lmao.

We still aren't certain if it was the water that killed it or the lovely plastic and glass hitting that nice, hard porcelain ;).

Unfortunately it's all relative. Some may actually consider the fact that their program is better than another program and need to vent that it is, a real problem.

But I do know what you mean.  I always try to keep things in perspective, that there is always someone worse off than I am. It keeps me grounded.

"Not once did he whine, cry or complain, right up to his dying day"

Sounds like a person after my heart! "Oft the sone in maners lyke wyll be unto the Father"

I don't care to be part of a heated discussion myself the old english way of pretending that it is raining ie just ignoring the guy works well. That said I enjoy reading OTHER persons heated discussions they are often very funny and I have learned a lot that way. I don't really understand this almost paranoid aversion against heated discussions. Creative people often fights! Sadly many interesting threads have been shut down by overeager forum moderators. The first, medium and last maxim of any moderator should always be like the maxim of the Connatic of Trillion, "When in doubt do nothing".

Of course, once the forumites begin flinging poo it's time to shut it down.

Of course but there is a great span between total chaos and total blandness. Renderosity has total control and decides exact where on the 1000 grade scale we belong. Fights within reason acts like spice in the food. As it is now there are no spice in the Poser forum IMO.

Quote - Hey maybe we should have an unofficial challenge to see who can use the most things they've never used before in a scene. Right after we have a race to see who can be the first to install all the content they've downloaded but left it zipped. lol

Actually, I recently spent several days installing almost everything I'd ever bought - last week. I did miss one light set, I noticed while rendering today so I need to go back and get that, as well. Left out the items for M3 and V3, still made my runtime fairly sizeable.

Now when I purchase something I extract it immediately for use. Got tired of having all that stuff and not using it

And too much spice spoils the soup.

Perhaps if you like fights you should join another forum. It might draw you and ppl like you when this crap gets ridiculous, but it drives away more than it draws.

**I found a great FREE program for OSX  called "calibre" that will convert almost any document into the various E-reader formats.
Now that I have finally finished my 13 month animation project for my last film client
I have decided to take a long sabbatical and read All of those classic sci fi novels on my convenient tablet.
such as the Dune series By Frank & Brian Herbert as well as the Isaac Asimov "Foundation" series.

yeah I am an old school Sci -fi geek.

Calibre works on Windows too. I think you'll love Dune and Foundation! I know I do!

Quote - GUILTY! ;). I probably have more stuff that I've never used than stuff I've actually used...snicker. A crying shame...lol. All that money and nothing to show for it really but a bunch of 1's and zeros.

That's precisely my reason for no longer having a dog in most of the forum fights! I have too much stuff as it is! Why cry about not buying more?!?

"And all these _pad things just confuse me. They play games, they download books, and what else? Sort of like a giant phone, but with no keypad, and don't make calls? I think I need one, but I don't know why!'

Ironicly I was a major tablet skeptic
I used to Say: "Bah!! if I cant run C4D+ Vray and photo shop etc on it what good is it??"

But now that I own one I realize its not for Full graphics production.
its more like a personal productivity device that we always saw in the sci fi movies & Tv series
I bought a Capacitive stylus for mine and have been able to create some great Digital pencil sketches
with a free drawing app.
I did not even bother with my free one month subscription  to the streaming TV& movie content
on "amazon prime"
I just convert My own Vids to HD mpeg4 movies and load them to the kindle from my mac for traveling
I have my entire personal library in my pocket,
access to the web& Email  (of course)
I have a grocery shopping app (which caused quite a few stares from  the other"low tech" patrons in my local grocer)
and it has a great Digital comic book app. and of course Games
it really makes the drudgery of sitting at my local laundry center flash by.

My mac laptop has been permanently promoted to "Home Computer"

I am having great fun with this new tech toy!!

Cheers

"And too much spice spoils the soup"

The great Swedish 19th century composer Hugo Alfvén learned orchestration this way, or rather he learned his renowned advanced orchestration technique in this way: By inviting his fellow orchestra members to lunch and getting them to talk and argue why just their instrument was superior. While Alfvén was taking notes. Of course some musicians became enemies for life after that but Alfvén had the information.
