Subject: What do you use 3D modeling for?

GaryChildress ( ) posted Sat, 17 March 2012 at 9:13 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 5:15 PM

There are a lot of products of almost every shape and form imagineable out there for Poser and its figures. I first became aquainted with 3D modeling only a couple years ago. I generally use it for creating graphics for computer games which I play. These are personal enhancements to existing computer games that I like to make. I'm not a professional game designer or anything remotely close. So Poser plays a very practical purpose in my life.

Not knowing much about the 3D industry I am curious, what do others use Poser for? Why do you use 3D software? I see a lot of really strange but interesting Poser content in the Renderosity Marketplace and I cannot for the life of me figure out what people actually do with it?

Since I am aspiring to create and sell products myself here it may help me to become a better vendor if I knew what people were doing with all this stuff. Plus I'm really curious.

Thanks for any replies. :)

All I do is play. I make cars, airplanes, props.... and use them in my scenes. I buy a lot of stuff... and use them in my scenes. I do absolutely nothing productive with any of it.

I made a "3D Mac" Character is Posers Faceroom (He's up there wearing the Batman Mask) and I have him doing nonsensical Stuff in stupid renders. It is also useless.

I amuse myself. I contribute nothing of value. For me it's just an expensive hobby.

I am with MacMyers. I just make stuff to amuze myself. I usually only create superhero costumes. I am going to make a full-blown CGI movie one day, but right now, I do stuff to learn toward that end.

And the movie will be just to amuze myself...

Gary, 3D content is used in just about everything you see on TV today, to some degree or another.

Most gadgets you see advertised - like a cell phone, or an iPad, even a coffee maker, are 3D models of that gadget, instead of the actual gadget.

Many car commercials use 3D models of the car instead of the car itself.

For the most part, unless its an actual human you're looking at in a tv show or a commercial - and especially a hollywood film - from a single item to an entire scene, there is a big chance that it is a 3D model, and even humans, in some instances, are questionable.

Why? because it's cheaper than hiring a film crew and renting location space, and you can do more with it in a much shorter time frame and much smaller budget.

Poser is a low-end program that isn't widely used by the "professionals" but it's becoming a more and more common tool, especially for freelance visual effects artists, who use Poser and similar programs for everything from web graphics to comic books to animated films. It's not yet capable of producing the same visual effects that more advanced software does, so it is mostly considered a hobbyists program, but there are professional artists in all mediums that use it in some form or another.

I treat Poser as an adult form of playing with dolls. (sorry people) It provides a poseable figure that you can dress and place into any position (scene) you can imagine , and find props for.   I have done fake book covers for romance novels,  illustrated kids stories with catsle sets, storybook dragon and of course a princess and I will admit to some bondage and other porn.

I find it fast and easy to use and have done some projects roughing out action plans (storyboarding) for long animations as a commercial contract.

Some of the artists here do commercial work using Poser as a part of their workflow.

I also use Lightwave ffor modelling things I cant buy or buy at a price I can afford.

I've made Poser illustrations for product packages and also a company logo.  I mostly use it for fun, though, in illustrating role playing characters or stories.

I've seen Poser images on most of the top stock photo sites. Judging from the downloads, some of them do quite well, though, I'd think one would have to have a decently robust machine to pump out any reasonable quantity of renders at the pixel resolutions (5k x 5k or bigger) that such sites demand.

I use poser to relieve anxiety and stress, it helps to occupy my mind on something else.

timarender ( ) posted Sun, 18 March 2012 at 5:18 AM

I use it to generate little non-commerciual animations. I recently used it to demonstrate 3d 'map' information (including a demo simulation of the effects of rising sea levels in London UK).

These days I'm only using Poser for my comics, I do think it's the most effective tool to create comics in less time. I used to draw them by hand, before realizing I could do comics with Poser also. I've been using Poser since version 2, at first for game graphics, but I retired from game creation about 2 years ago.

The 3D modeling I do also used to be for games, but the last 2 years it has only been for creating poser content. I only create toon content, since that is a section of poser that gets little attention. There are more then enough (too many) toon figures and lot's of toon animals, but little props. What good are toon figures if you can't create a world around them? These days I'm only modelling for my own needs, but I do release those models through content paradise for others to enjoy as well, asking a small amount in return for all the hard work I've put into it.

I do enjoy modeling, I like to create little worlds around the toons I'm using. Most of the time it's for some comic project I'm working on, but at times it's for fun as well.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

I do a little of everything other people have said here, from playing dress up dolly - I loved Action Man (GI Joe) when I was a kid so this is an extension of that.  I also like to make "art" now and again, illustrations for greeting cards, SF images, some funny pics and a few comic pages.  I make stuff for other people to use, do the odd commission and just generally have fun.

I haven't to date made any pornographic images with Poser but if I ever wanted to, I believe I have more than enough content.  :)

Over the years I have spent a frightening amount of money on content.  Now I tend to make a lot of the stuff I use, or rely on the stuff I already have.  If, however I had spare cash, I'd no doubt be buying like crazy again.

I use it to experiment with framing and posing since it's much cheaper than hiring a model for my photography, I also use it to try and make digital art but fail most of the time. :D

hornet3d ( ) posted Sun, 18 March 2012 at 4:30 PM

Like many have already stated I use it to try and make art, and regularly fail.  I also kid myself I an going to write a book and do renders to illustrate snippets of the story.  In truth, as I am semi-retired and getting on in years, I find things like lighting and trying to understand materials streaches me as does trying to model props and clothes.  I may not learn much but I think what mental capacity I still have is worked harder than if I sat and watched daytime TV for similar periods.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

i got Poser to use as an aid in posing of models for my sculpting, it was practically useless when i got Poser2, somewhat helpfull but left much to be desired... so i began trying to improve it to make it more usefull... well here we are many years later, Poser has come a long way but theres still room for improvement, i  dont sculpt that much anymore its tedious work that takes a lot of time, im aging fast and parkinsons has taken its toll on my physical abilities, and as hornet3d said it exersizes the mind and helps maintain mental capacity, ...it also prolongs life stregnthens the immune system and prevents authuritis and rhumatism, AND prevents the common cold and helps with flu symptoms... all for just $1.00 a bottle ... act fast , order yours today while supplies last...

:O)

Y'all have a great day.

I use Poser for book cover illustrations.
The rendering is done in MODO with Vue for backgrounds.

Still Poser is where the idea is created...

ToxicWolf ( ) posted Sun, 18 March 2012 at 11:34 PM

Considering what I spend on Poser and Poser materials, figures and props there will be a considerable loss. It's just a good way of subsidizing the cost of having fun.

Bringing digital havoc on digital politicians that if I were to do it in RL would land me in prison.  But, no other walk of life provides so much material for satire or is more perfectly suited for it.

Therefore, Poser keeps me out of jail.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Thu, 29 March 2012 at 5:22 AM

I started looking at Poser and various modelling apps as tools for making games sprites and environments... because I was learning some games development for Apple IOS (iphone / ipad) and, parallel to that Microsoft XNA.

But I didn't get very far with that before just getting hooked on Poser as a creative medium in itself ;-)

Now I guess I'm focusing on (slowly) learning to model well... and learning how to make stuff look as good as I can within Poser.

But if we're talking about uploading ourselves into cyberspace, that 360 degree scanner gizmo that Lee Perry Smith and Dimensional Imaging are using looks like the ticket...

...just needs an upgrade to capture the old brainwaves too ;-)

Might be a cheaper and more readily available option than a ticket into actual outer space...
