The lighting effect on butterfly wings has been done on higher end apps, can it be done in poser?

I suppose this is another challenge for Baggingsbill.

I saw some math in the first link, so he will know how to make a shader of it. (Or at least say it's impossible in poser)

-How can you improve things when you don't make mistakes?

I tried looking at his scale shader and the nylon2 shader, but I get lost fast. I think it's a job for matmatic for sure. The changing colours might mean caustics, which would mean no.

Butterfly scales?  Why on earth would you want to weigh a butterfly?  They're light.  Very light, in fact.  That's all you need to know.

Hm.

Those guys went about it a very hard way and got little results for it.

Here's my stab.

That is a preview render - right out of Poser preview. I didn't even actually render it.

It's just a free pair of wings with a simple color map. I could do better but I'll leave that to you guys.

Here's the shader. The numerical and color values don't matter much - it depends on your map and what colors you want.

The map I had was green. Using HSV I shifted it to blue and magenta.

You run your variations into a ColorRamp, which is driven by Edge_Blend. The Edge_Blend changes value based on viewing angle.

Specular also changes value based on viewing angle and light source angle. I did one branch with Diffuse and one branch with Specular. Mix and match to whatever goal you want.

There is no math here - you see what you're going to get in real time.
