Subject: Off topic Butter vs margarine

DreamlandModels ( ) posted Sat, 15 September 2012 at 6:23 PM · edited Sat, 21 September 2024 at 12:50 AM

Just got this from a friend and thought I would share it here.

Tom

Pass The Butter.... Please.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter... How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.....

DO YOU KNOW... The difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarinecan increaseheart diseasein women by 53%over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrientsin other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and
only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease ...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL(this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART  THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULEaway from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

  • no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
  • it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly  plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends..... (If you want to butter them up')!

Yep, read it before.  Margarine isn't sold in the UK.  According to the legal definition of "margarine" here, anyhow.  We do have a lot of "butter-like spreads", though.

I prefer butter and since I have no problems with cholesterol or such, I generally go for that, budget allowing.  If not, we buy "I can't believe people think this is butter", or similar.  :)

I haven't used either for about 20 years.

The idea of spreading fat (animal or vegetable) on bread then eating it, turns my stomach.

Each to their own I guess.

Winterclaw ( ) posted Sat, 15 September 2012 at 9:41 PM

I try to avoid trans fats (like margarine) as much as possible.  It's hard sometimes because prepackaged food makers love the stuff because it extends self time and its cheap I believe.

WARK!

Lost 52 pounds on Atkins over the last year.  Butter is the way to go.  Gotta have some fat while on Atkins.

I quit margarine 20 years ago when I realized it was not healthy.

Rape seed is a major industry in Canada, so our margine is largely made from canola oil -- not plastic. LOL. Some of our margarine is made from olive oil.

It's generally no longer hydrogenated. At least, it isn't around here. And it has about 1/10th of the fat of butter.

However, the fat is "fractionated", which is a new method used to take polyunsaturated fat into a room temperature solid.

Whether the new method is completely safe in the long term, however, is still up for debate.

Shortening is generally still hydrogenated, and should probably be avoided like the plague.

We eat a lot of weird things that are acceptable because we grew up with it or we are influenced by "normalcy" around us.  Hot dogs, sausages and such, for one, that I refer to as "lips and asses".  Why do they charge so much for "lips and asses"? And is it better to buy "premium" lips and asses or "low cost" ones?

See... Now I love hamburgers enough to eat them at least once a week.  I usually fix them at home though.  Fast food doesn't generally taste like real food to me and I feel awful an hour after eating it.  McDonalds is pretty high up on my "NO" list :D  Though some breakfast items I'm okay with.... How do you screw up an effing Hash Brown? :D

They lost me at this point: "Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods."

This is an opinion, not a fact. I prefer the taste of margarine. And nothing can ruin the taste of home-made sloe jam like butter - not even stale bread.

And since I had to experience cowsheds, the home-slaughtering of a pig and the butchering of some chickens at my grandpa's, I prefer food that was processed in food-factories, thank you very much.

Darn and I thought we were going to get a lesson on the difference between a Butter shader and a Margarine Shader!

Then Sam claiming-screaming-starting a forum flame war that drives the mods crazy; that the "I can't believe people think this is butter!" shader is a fake!

which reminds me of the time...

Little Sam and Big Sam were playing catch in the front yard when Little Sam saw a honey bee. He ran over and stomped it.
'That was a honey bee,' Big Sam said, 'one of our friends. For stomping him you will do without honey for a week.'

Later Little Sam saw a butterfly, so he ran over and stomped it.
'That was a butterfly,' Big Sam said, 'one of our friends, and for stomping him you will do without butter for a week.'

The next morning the family sat down for breakfast. Little Sam ate his plain toast with no honey or butter.

Suddenly a cockroach ran out from under the stove. Mrs. Sam stomped it.
Little Sam looked up at his father and said, 'Are you going to tell her, Dad, or should I?'

Same here! I can't stand the taste of butter or marge. Never have. As a kid I always used to have my school sandwiches made with dry bread.

Drizzling (or rather, pouring!) olive oil on everthing is much nicer! :)

Butter. Sometimes butter and olive oil blend, if my wife does the shopping... which I have to admit, she usually does 😉

I like the heels of the bread loaf, toasted and thickly buttered, with a bit of marmalade... yum 🤤

If I could buy a loaf of bread that was just all the heels from other loaves, I totally would.

Monkeycloud, jsut buy one of those unsliced loaves and the slice it long ways. Then even if you cut it to fit in your toaster you still have serious amounts of crust. Let the wife and kids (if any) have the practically crustly center pieces.

He he... yeah, good suggestion 😄

Or maybe I could just wait for a quiet moment in the supermarket bread aisle, then go to work... they'd never notice at the checkout, I'm sure, that I'd made my own loaf-of-heels
