It seems to be with only certain shaders.  Hampton hair assigns the shaders to multiple objects and every time I load Dublin I get the SSS shaders.

Have taken time off of playing around with ACSEL to focus on other areas of my rendering that need polishing.  I have both hampton hair and dublin so will re-download the shaders(everything got whacked when I rebuilt my system last month) and see if I can duplicate your issue KH.

Thanks!  I am on a total new install myself. This issue only started with 4.5.

Did you get your site mail I sent?

Edit to add:  The Hampton hair issue is intermittent.

KH.. yeah.. I got the sitemail and responded.  I haven't wanted to touch my puter all day.  Had a render baking.. just a simple nude with an ibl.  Was getting a massive 169k s/s so didn't want to touch anything.. usually the max I get with an ibl and no gpu rendering is about 50k s/s.  Been fooling around with some vehicle obj's I got off a freebie site too.  57 t-bird, ferrari enzo, gt500 shelby cobra, m/b slr mcclaren, lambo murcielago, pagani zonda,  & peterbilt 379.  all are in 3ds format, so have to open them in 3ds then save as obj then import into studio, then set up all the mats.  On the plus side, completed setting up the t-bird and saved it as a studio prop.  it renders really nice too... next up is the peterbilt.. just because I think naked wimmin on trucks are kind cool.

Still looking at that one myself....................... That time period does seem to be his favorite.    The detail is so superior compared to most, it's hard to pass up.

"just because I think naked wimmin on trucks are kind cool."  Agreed!  Trucks are just plain cool anyway. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Sharkbytes-BamaScans ( ) posted Tue, 25 September 2012 at 5:16 PM

omg.. just opened the material list for that peterbilt... nearly every material line has a raytracing map meant for rendering in 3ds.  think i'm going to re-export it as an obj with no mtl file and set the maps manually...  guy who made it was pretty in-depth.. fortunately he named everything with nice descriptive names..  all just practice for me.. not this quarter(just started) but next quarter in school I start my solidworks classes(CAD and architecture major).  I've seen the rendering that solidworks and 3DS does and it doesn't hold a candle to the D|S - Reality - Lux flow and lux just renders things so beautifully.. it's going to be my secret weapon to give me a visual foot up on the competition in school.  can't wait to start learning how to make stuff like this peterbilt.

Hello.

I though that would be fun to have a "render challenge" to inspire people on trying new approaches with Reality and Lux.

Jeremy Birn, great author of rendering techniques, publishes these challenges and he provides the models as well. I looked at what is available on his site and though that this would be a lot of fun:

Here is the link to download the OBJ files for this scene:

http://www.3drender.com/challenges/madScience/madScience_OBJ.rar

This is a great set that can lead to many great solutions.

If you like the challenge, it would be great to see what you can come up with. Go crazy and post your renders here. No prizes, not competition, just a lot of fun.

Thanks to jeremy Birn for providing the great material.

Cheers.

I forgot to mention, the challenge should be without additions, justr what is in the set so that the comparisons between approaches are fair. Add lights, change camera POV but keep the set the same.

Metals don't have much color of their own, they take on the color of whatever it is they have to reflect. So metals, esepcially shiny ones, need some care taken with their environment to really look good. For example:

Sharkbytes-BamaScans ( ) posted Tue, 25 September 2012 at 10:55 PM

thanks j.. i solved the immediate issue by changing the diffuse color.. and then adding a chrome reflection map as the diffuse texture.. then put my truck in a cube.. light on the front.. light on the side.. all my chrome is showing up.. i've got the gloss cranked tho and it's still sort of matte-ish.. but i'm liking the results so far.. will post the render in the morning when it's done baking.. only getting 32k s/s and it's a 1920x1080 render

Hey gang. Posting a recent personal fail (in my opinion) where a water plane didn't quite live up to expectations, even with a caustic alpha map on try 20 billion and 2.

Experimenting with Dreamlight's Forsaken for Urban Future 3. Mixed feelings on the addition, as it's really a simple shader material and the set was moved around. At least I didn't take the hit of full price. Should'a knew better and just made it myself

Don't think it's a fail at all SBT.  Pretty decent render actually.  Not sure of the look you were going for but it's pretty dope actually.  I've never done an underwater scene for a reason.

Okay.... here's the fully baked render of the truck I was workin on last night.  Still need to tweak the settings for the tires; the chrome could all be a bit chrome-ier and my lighting sucks; but it all still gets the point across.

You went full black! Never go full black!

(seriously, the reason it looks funny is because your paint and tires are mysteriously absorbing all light that hits them, set their color value up a just a bit)

J.. thanks for the pointer.  It stands to reason, in nature black absorbs light too.  Just never put two and two together.  For the sidewalls and tread of the tires; I didn't think I had it set to triple 0.  This truck was just a pita to set up materials for; but, I still like the way it came out.  I'd like a bit more polished chrome look out of the chrome instead of the brushed look that it came out as.

For the chrome, remove any maps you may have in the diffuse and bump channel then set the diffuse to 255,255,255 and 10,10,10, polish at 9000+. Give that a try then adjust from there.

Correction:  I'm still asleep.  Just be sure you do not have any maps in the alpha or modifiers channels

You say that we can't add anything..... The scene needs an environment to render properly.....   ???????????????

An environement? The model provides the "Mad Scientist" lab, complete with table, books, rats etc. and it's enclosed inside a "room" (a cube). Thag should provide the whole environment. Unless I'm misreading you :)

The challenge for this is to work on lighting, camera, and materials. It should provide a lot of opportunities.

Hope this helps.
