Sorry, no I didn't get that it was a joke. The web has the habit of stripping the messages of their intonation :)

I was being cheeky & sarcastic for the most part this had been a decent thread it spins out of control sometimes but thats what you get with tight nit groups. I have NP respectiing your wishes. I refrained from posting many of this type of renders but then seen others began posting them so I thought mm ok but no worries I will keep them to my site & pages. I could go into many examples prior but because the word "porn" was not mentioned it was not an issue.
Quote - Thank you Paolo, I will look forward to checking this out when I get home this evening... On the import scale, in ds3 (if I remember correctly) it allows you to import obj and you select 'from' which has an app name and then a scale such as 'daz studio 1 unit = 1cm', 'Hexagon 1 unit = 1cm', and so on... Is there a particular 'from' to select, and do we then enter our own scale to be 125%? - it may make more sense when I'm at home and can try it, but if you could clarify, it would be great!
I exported the model from modo so I thought that the modo preset would work but it didn't, everything came though huge. I tried some other presets but they were ether too big or too small. 125% seems about right. Probably not exact but, if you place a 1m cube in the scene, everything looks about right, scale-wise.
Hope this helps.

Paolo,
I love your idea for a render challenge, and have downloaded the scene in anticipation of participating, but I have no idea where to begin lol. I think my muse (as feable as she is) has abandoned me entirely.
I'll keep contemplating and if I come up with any inspiration I will give the challenge a shot.
Just to be clear you said we should not add anything to the scene, ok. What about rearranging the objects? Leaving certain things out? Are you just looking for material changes and PoV changes?
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael.
Glad that you like the idea. I often saw that constraints are a great way to inspire creativity, that's why I asked to not add anything to the scene. What that leaves you with are camera angles and lighting, which are the crucial components of every scene and the ones that often get neglected. That's why I suggested such restrictions. Re-arranging or hiding is OK, IMHO, although you will find that a bit hard to do since the scene come as as a single object. Of course you are free to load the OBJ in your 3D editor of choice (modo, Blender, etc) and split it up into different OBJs. The file itself is divided in groups but I found that Studio doesn't respect the division and loads the files as a single mesh.
Cheers.

Thanks Paolo! I have now imported it, but the tube rack and liquid + liquid surface for the tubes doesn't look quite right... I think the other items look right? I'm sure its me not being familiar with the importing... this is what I had set;- (it also renders like it, tried to set the surface to null, but then the surface was still with indents around the edges - any suggestions greatfully recieved!)

Im kind of with Reg on this one who decides what is right or wrong.....
The staff at Rendo and it's TOS along with Paolo. He is the one who started this thread and it was not for purpose of posting porn..
I personally don't think it belongs here nor is it inline with the TOS. Porn has it's place, keep it where it is appreciated.
I would like to see you two delete those post and I will explain why. My 11 year old Granddaughter has become interested in 3D and what I am doing with it. When she is over here she works on my computer and quite often reads this thread to learn and further her understanding of 3D art and the use of Reality. She understands nudity in art but does not need to be seeing porn at 11 years old..

I had not noticed the tube/liquid problem because of the angle I'm rendering from but the rack impoted that way for me also.

No problem, then we need to delete other stuff like doc's bondage renders. I have no problems complying as long as the rules are the same for everyone cheers!

I've kept quiet on this so far even though it was my image that it started it. I dug through the FAQ but somehow missed the TOS section. I put in my post that I wasn't sure if it was pushing things because of the contact.
I deleted the image from my gallery but by the time the issue was first brought up I couldn't remove the post because my time limit for editing was over. I can't see any way to remove the forum post myself unless I'm missing something. If any admin/mod wants to do it, please go ahead.
I never had any pornograhic or sexual intentions with my image. I made it in the spirit of horror and terror. She's grabbing him because she's about to chop his junk off. That's shock and terror on his face, not pleasure. That doesn't change the fact that it breaks the TOS, and I've removed what I was able to remove, but I have to agree with Bob on his point about all the bondage images recently that also violate the TOS and no one had a problem with.
I stayed out of this, but since when does bondage equals porn? Besides, except for the odd render, art has always been the main objective.
I think if we are brigning young children into it more then a few images needs to be addressed. I remember some folks came to post here due to the new more strict TOS on the Daz forum so im confused... But I will no longer be posting renders only seeking advice this will avoid futher possible pissed off fellow members. I don't need the grief. All cause I used the word porn.......

Not about whether something equals porn, or if it's regarded as art by an individual. In this case, does the image go beyond the TOS?
Like I said, the TOS are worded in such a way that many images from a significant number of posters will break a strict interpretation of the TOS. Common sense and context needs to be applied and of that doesn't work, time for the big stick.

Bob, please don't feel like you need to avoid posting here. All submissions are welcome as long as they are in respect of some simple terms. I don't want to give you the impression that I singled you out. That's not the case. There's been a large series of pictures that made me feel quite uncomfortable in the last few weeks. The bondage series was defintely a issue for me but I didn't want to make a fuss about it. Often these things come and go and I thought: "OK, this is excessive but as long as it's an isolated episode let it pass." But the trend seemed to be sustained and your last post about porn raised the alarm. I though that it was time, at long last, to speak up. Yes, a lot of your images are quite sexual in nature and I thought several times that we reached a point where there were too many of those and not enough of other kinds.
In fact I'm thinking that several people have left these pages because of that shift. Maybe it's time to close this thread and start a new one and make it clear what kind of images we're looking for. This is not to say that it's wrong to create images of sexual nature. I simply don't want to see them when discussing Reality and when we talk about how to use it to achieve best results. It's a matter of context, not judgment. You don't have a picnic in church, same rules apply here :)
But, if you or anybody else have any non-sexual images that you would like to show here they are most welcome.
Peace.

Paolo, I have found some of the defaults to give a lot of problems, with some of the glass items set to matte but with an alpha/translucency of 0.15 or so, as well as high specularity / glossyness... you definatly made this a challange! When converting items to glass and liquids, managed to get overdose of fireflies etc (proper ones!) lol... managed to get it sort of under control... did you see the issue of the tubes rack and tubes liquid? I have managed to get the rack into some proper shape by using three Dformers, but it was rather tricky! ...going to call it a night for now... but here is where a very quick change in some of the glassware and liquids have me so far... (mostly getting firefly / transparancy sorted.... )
Is anyone else having the strange material issues, or is it that its just me? (I did import the settings from the mtl file, was that the right thing to do? ...I am using the older Reality 1.25 if that is the reason? - see my import settings earlier... ?
It would certainly be more of a challange if you provided us a benchmark Paolo, hint hint! (and then be able to confirm any material / mesh issues... `¬) (mesh here... http://fav.me/d5glaax ) not too much headway yet...
I'll check back later.... `¬)
Just to chime in (not to keep the pot stirring) on the whole ToS issue. GuardianAngel is pretty friggin good and pretty timely on renders/photos that get published and how they fit in to Rendo's ToS. I once posted a render of a fully clothed woman flipping the bird. Used a no advisory tag on it. Before i went to bed that night; I got an email stating that she had put up the stock advisory thumbnail for my render as her flipping the bird is considered an obscene gesture and should have been given a language advisory. If brad's render got no such email for him from GA.. I think it's safe to assume it doesn't violate the sexual contact part of the ToS. Might put a tag on it for suggested violence since she was about to cut his junk off.
Quote - And this is no place for 11 yr olds IMO perhaps they could be steered to the DS forum..
I happen to agree with this, but then again, depending on where you live and how you were brought up, morality, laws and ethics are different. Most of my work that I post involves nudity and I try to be tasteful with the subject matter. I say post since i have a whole other body of work for other clients and places that are far removed from the TOS. I personally would not let my child view my work, most of my work unless I made it specifically for them and in saying that i wouldn't let them participate in these or DAZs forums for many reasons, nudity, horrible attitudes and language, alternative lifestyle/religion discussions, morality issues, etc. They will see enough of this at school and in the real world, no need to start them early in cyberspace. I have 2 nephews and have always encouraged their artistic abilities, there are plenty of art tools/techniques for them to learn without having Poser or DS while they are young.
I am grateful for the rendo TOS, it's the main reason I don't post in the other Reality thread at DAZ and as far as I am concerned, it is pretty self explanitory and leaves no room for "interpretation".
Thanks for the new OBJ Paolo, I was trying with the first one, but it didn't go well.
Regards, Michael
brad.. i can get that kind of speed if i network 3 desktops and have just a simple nude model w/hair and a background single light render. add another light.. some clothes.. or a complex scene and i'm at 1/2 that speed w/2 desktops running... so.. therefore.. until i get all the parts for my new pc in.. i am forced to temporarily dislike you.. :D
It was not intentional, the glass materials in modo got exported, as usual, with the alpha set to simulate transparency. I fixed than. I also fixed the tube holder. There is a new archivem with exactly the same name and same obj names but with a few things fixed. I also notedf that the glass globe behind the tube holder was intersecting the holder so I moved it a bit.
Here is the link (same as before):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3701566/3DRenderChallenge/MadScience.zip
And here is a quick and dirty test of the glass and tube holder. I only change the materials for the holder, the tubes and the liquids inside, it's a 5-minute setup just to test that everything works as expected, lot of noise still there but it does show the fixes.
Cheers.

Thanks Paolo! I did a very quick spin round the materials and left to render overnight, but still have a slight issue with noise... It is greatly appreciated that you have tweaked the items, I will download again tonight when I get home!
P.S. if my posts come over as abrupt or condescending, then I apologise, it is not my intention... I just state things in a 'matter of fact' way, again I am sorry if it comes across in a way that may upset anyone, it is not intended... `¬)
I've noticed that the set is quite noisy too, but I will partially attribute that to my material selections (mark that 'partially'!!). Here's to hoping time cures all things!

The set has a lot of objects in close proximity. If you set the materials to be very glossy then there will be a lot of reflections and bounced light from the nearby object and noise will show up. This is a set where each and every material needs to be manually adjusted, which is kinda the idea about the challenge. So, you need to tweak the glossiness/polish until, it looks good and produces low noise.

Oh yeah even though I had to remap the Armory Lights so that the wall tubes were seperate from the ceiling lights in order to get the light where I wanted it
and after a little over 19 hrs my system locked up and I've got 32 gig of ram had to crash the system with a hard reset

Sounds like my standard procedure for any scene :-) She's already cooking on the fourth adjustment and looking better. Very good info to consider for prop-heavy scenes nonetheless! Much to be learned from Paolo-san.

Ive been checking the Memory Conservative box in Reality with every scene rendered after Lux RC3. I'm running 12gb at 2000mhz, and even though I rarely max it out, I've had seemingly small scenes gobble up memory 'til it crashed my rig. The Mem Conserv seems to fix this.

Here's my trial run thus far. Might decide to texture the 'walls' to make them look a little more sinister =D And yes, it's still cookin' to scrub some of the noise within the bookshelf. Looks like more samples will even it out.
Please forgive the thin film on the glass. I got a little carried away!
(And I cheated a little, shh! More and more incarnations equated to 2 extra but entirely necessary props)

...coming on nicely SuperBoomTurbo! ;) ...I like the blueprinted worktop and the wood textures - the boiling flask is a nice touch as well! ...makes me wish I wasn't at work so I could spend a bit of time on it too! - it will take me a while to catch up after my feeble efforts last night! `¬)
Can't quite make out what the blue print is of, some sort of device - must be top secret! ...but it looks very cool!
I find it easier to work with mem conserved ticked as well I have 8G of ram but will be building a beast box next year once I sell 2 grand of projects 1/4 there already... I will be keeping my notebook as well which I will use to build and export scenes. When the time comes I will ask again how one transfers lux scenes from machine to machine. I know you have to select texture collection...

I have to get this imported so I can play with it R/L permiting
Now this really is the last image in this series (for now), but I do plan on trying to recreate this look in other settings. Think I'm going to start browsing some old black and white movie posters for inspiration.
This is the one that had 603 materials to edit in Reality. Luckily most of them were in the lower part of the building and didn't show in the scene so I didn't have to do much with them. But still a pain to go though the list in the Reality window.
