Still learning lighting.  I should look online about lighting, and where to place them.

Thank you Paolo, and Happy New Years to you.

ps, I would love to see how you would render a mermaid :)

LOL its cool happy new year man!

The thing with my is I work is alot of extreme size ratio stuff so I need to popstwork to get rid of artificats due to stretching the mesh and textures in a lot of cases.

bobvan ( ) posted Mon, 31 December 2012 at 6:58 PM

I also would suggest adding some mesh & curve lights you can always remove what you dont need once you find the right balance.

lasserine ( ) posted Mon, 31 December 2012 at 7:07 PM

Part of the problem, is my, CPU isnt super great, and it takes, some time to render.

When, are the times you use a softbox, vs mesh light?

Any good software colorbration software?  My monitor could use it.

Wish I was good at making models, there is something I need to make.

I have an i7 8G machine i can sometimes get less then 1/2 hour of close ups with a soft box. The render I pointed you at used a mesh on top and a oftbox in the front this one takes me 3 to 4 hours cause of the characters & building all the unseen parts are hidden

Much better machine than mine.  Wish I had a i7.  Might get the new AMD FX 8530 CPU, or a i7, not sure.

Poor girl.

Why did you use a softbox and a mesh light?

In my scene, each xmas light set, has their own group for a total of 5, the fireplace has one, candles has another, the mesh light on the ceiling and I put a sun with the light plane outside for moon light.

Thats another thing to keep in mind the more you convert to lights the longer it will add to render times. You have some nice stuff on your D/A. I used the mesh above otherwise the desktop would of been too dark.

On my lawyer one, I used 2 mesh lights in the front.  Think that is one of my better images.  Didnt render for a while, and now I am slowly getting back into it.

What is a good skin gloss?  It is set at 8500, which is somewhat high.

Depends on what look you're going for. i start at 6250 for a dry, even tone, and go up to 71 or 7250 for a more slickery tone (yes, I meant slickery) =D

8500 is good for sweaty, slippery/baby oil skin, for reference.

Was just checking in on Reality 3 news, ahem! I went back to catch up around page 200, not quite there yet.

I always find skin that looks somewhat moist, looks healthy.  With a slight shine to it.

Quote - What is a good skin gloss?  It is set at 8500, which is somewhat high.

The value of gloss cannot be set by itself. I cannot enohasize this enough. I see this mistake all the time. Glossiness cannot be set by itself, it depends on the specular color. More exactly the brightness of the specular color. These two values work together and they cannot be taken apart.

The beightness of Specular determines how much light is reflected by the material. The Glossiness strength sets hiw polished the surface of the material is.

On top of this, the values need to be adjusted per type of texture and lights used in the scene so it's important to understand how the work because there are no recipes.

You can get a detailed description of how this works in my "Make Your Own Reality" course.

Cheers.

The shine we try to mimic in 3D, which is essentially the oils, can be duplicated more effectively with the top coat. Strangely enough, I've found some great combonations with ethnic skin (some character's I've made promo images for are Cuban/Asian, etc.) and using a color for the top coat that one wouldn't think is even remotely like skin, gives great results.

One fellow I have with caucasion skin uses a top coat in the area of 192 (light grey) in concert with some diffuse tweaks. Utilizing a self-made exr light file for IBL, I've gotten several renders where you'd swear its a photo. Same for an african american female, and an asian female. Lickably delicious ;-)  The asian has a top coat that looks like an orange crayon...

Been using it for a while brilliant tool but I am still using a weekly build how did you get Reality to work with 2.1 I thought there was a bug to be resolved??

swordman10 ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2013 at 4:31 AM

Hi Bobvan,

The Bug is only related to displacement IIRC..???.. so I just use the current RC on scenes that don't use any displacement maps, or I strip them out.

Cheers,

So your saying one just has to remove any displacement maps? that simple?? I suppose I could have both versions of lux just in case ?

swordman10 ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2013 at 4:47 AM

Here's the link to the latest Release Candidate. http://www.luxrender.net/en_GB/standalone

I usually have two Lux program files setup.  The current stable release and another for any Dev Builds that I want to try out.

As stated this IS a release candidate so no where near fully stable yet..Though I have been using it without any great issues...Just don't replace your current stable Version of Lux with it yet.

Cheers,

S.K.

The Air That I Breathe (Hollies)

If I could make a wish
I think I'd pass
Can't think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat, no books to read

Making love with you
Has left me peaceful, warm and tired
What more could I ask
There's nothing left to be desired
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep

Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe

Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep

Interesting concept. Also in this case the noise is probably caused by the difficulty of tracing a path for the light. If you provide a bit of additional light, like a side light, you might end up with much faster rendering and less noise.

Nope, just a sun. Since the song mentions "no light", I wanted to create a render which only uses a sun. I did change the Sun Turbidity to 4 and Sky Turbidity to 2. Everything else is default. I also used 2 Reality diffusers to soften the light (ceiling and window). Sun was angled to create shadows through the windows.

And what is the set, again, and where is it available? Also, what are "Reality diffusers"? Hope you don't mind the questions.

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2013 at 6:26 PM

A diffuser is simply a plane that has been set to have the matte translucent material. You set the transmission to almost pure white and place it between the light source and the subject. The distance between those two elements changes how the diffuser affects the light. In addition you can operate on the alpha channel to make the diffures a bit transparent, which causes the light to pass through it more easily.

The diffuser is, obviously, placed out of frame and is used to diffuse the light. In photography a diffuser is often employed to soften the harsh sun light and provide a more flattering light for the subject.

Hope this helps.

The set is actually a combination of 4 products: DeLuxe House (furniture, walls and windows), House Frame (background), The Neighbour's Pools (pool and Reality Water Plane) and Furniture Set One, Bed (bed). The Diffusers are part of the Reality props.

In Reality, the initial default is Glossy. I was stumped for a minute when the scene was rendering very dark, but once I changed it to Matte Translucent, it worked beautifully. I actually used one as a ceiling :)

Specular color = coat IOR, and thus both reflection intensity and strength of the fresnel effect. The second part is important, higher spec color not only makes highlights brighter, but they will strengthen dispropotionately on surfaces directly facing the camera. It is VERY important to remember that almost nothing you encounter is going to have an IOR much higher than ~1.5, which would map to a spec color of about 55 in Reality. Going much higher tends to make things bizziarely semi-mettalic.

"top coat" in Reality = absoprtion color + absroption depth, this is the amount of light lost in the coat. Stronger absorption will be darker, especially at grazing angles.

Glossyness = microscopic surface roughness of the coat. Rougher settings will blur reflections, resulting in larger and softer highlights.

Hi J. This is true if the index parameter is set at 0, which is what Reality currently does. Isn't it? I mean, it we set the index to a different value than that will be the IOR, innit?

Cheers.
