Yeah, I've been following that thread.  Something has gone wrong in a big way, and they're not handling it well.

I'm not sure if I'm affected or not.  My account says they're charging me monthly (I have never agreed to that), but so far no actual money has been taken.

MikeMoss ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2013 at 10:44 PM · edited Fri, 04 January 2013 at 10:48 PM

Hi

I'm not registered so I can't post there, but the call they should make is to your credit card company.

They take unauthorised charges very seriously.

The will stop any further charges from that company and if they have Visa they will probably refund the charges that were made to the card themselves.

I've had this happen several times and they made it good every time.

Once I dicovered that a company that I had made a purchase from had enrolled my in some kind of buyer's club without my asking, and was charging me something like $4.95 a month.

I'd been paying it for almost a year without noticing it because I kind of gloss over the small stuff.

After calling them and trying to get them to stop with no luck, I called Visa and they not only stopped the charges, the company refunded all the money they had charged me for the whole year.  Without credit card sales they would go out of business in a week so they don't like to make Visa mad.

Personally I think it is very worrying. I no longer take notice of any mail from there or visit their site any more so I could have possibly overlooked something like this. I wonder how many other people have been charged without immediately noticing. Thanks for the heads up. I think it is wise to warn people to be vigilant.

The entire site seems to be down. When I go there, I get a root directory listing of the server. You can access bits and pieces, but the site is not navigatable.

Looks like they know something is up and are trying to fix it before it gets worse.

Delete all your cookies, clear your cache, use another browser and finally do a clean install of Windows after formatting your disk at least twice. Your PC is clearly not in working order to be able to view the new DAZ site.

Note the post that says they are not offereing a refund but doing it in vouchers.

Sorry to say, but if you ask for a full refund they should give it to you, and back into your bank account, not in vouchers.

yeah, keeping an eye on my inbox, and will check next bank statement very closely.

thankfully i used PayPal for my old PC subscription( cancelled early last year), i never did trust daz with any card details.

hornet3d ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 4:47 AM

Thanks for the warning, I will keep an eye on the email and card statements.

It also prompted me to actually return to the site and delete all of my credit cards (although, according to the thread at Daz this is no gaurantee they won't charge you even then).  I may also be lucky in the fact that I cancelled my PC membership well over a year ago, before Prime started, which I am now subscribed to.

While on the site I also stopped my subscription to the newsletter as I have been deleting them from my inbox, unread, for some months now.  Having said all that it is really sad as I have shopped at Daz3D for years and it was through Daz I got started in the hobby.  Feels a bit like loosing a friend after many years because you just driffted apart.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

I'm amazed that the way Daz are handling this latest mess is actually legal in the US.

Touch wood - I think my PC membership has been cancelled long enough not to be affected and if I remember right it was PayPal and not credit card anyway.

Daz are very lucky to have such loyal and constantly forgiving customers. Most people can run a better organised business from the corner of their bedroom....

randym77 ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 7:10 AM

I think you can get the refund in cash, but you have to ask for it. That's how DAZ typically handles refunds in all situations - unless you specify you want the refund to go to your bank account, PayPal account, or credit card, they give you store credit.

I'd guess there's nothing nefarious going on.  They are just doing what they always do.  Which is not adequate for this situation.  This isn't someone deciding they don't like a product or accidentally buying the wrong thing.  This is people having money taken from them that they never agreed to.  It requires a different response, but either the people capable of making it happen are all still on vacation, or they're clueless.  I'm guessing the former.

I really think this is a mistake.  They've been doing major work on the DAZ site the past week or so, as the repeated errors of the sort BasicWiz encountered show.  But somebody needs to come back from Aruba and fix this, pronto.

basicwiz ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 8:23 AM

The site is back up (for me) this morning. At least, enough of it that I could check to be sure my old account had not been reactivated.

Guessing Daz's motivations/reasons/problems is really not productive. We all know about the problem now. Let's leave it at that. OK?

Michael314 ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 8:41 AM · edited Sat, 05 January 2013 at 8:42 AM

Hi,

thanks a lot for the heads-up.  I also stopped my PC membership last October. So far I have not found any unjustified charge, but my next statement is only due next week. I'll keep an open eye to this.

At that time, I followed their guideline about cancelling PC subscription and it worked (apart from shutting me down from any PC advantages the moment I confirmed that, despite my membership was paid for a couple more days...  But no issue, as I also couldn't find anything useful there anymore.)

For anyone affected: If the charge was made in error, it is your right to get the cash back, not just a voucher. If anything fails, request a chargeback at your bank. (However in the past, DAZ customer service always was very good, I would try to get the mistake corrected through CS first.) Best regards,

   Michael

Don't bet on it.

Deleting your CC information doesn't appear to really delete your CC information with DAZ.  I deleted all of my CC information last August and I was still billed for a PC annual renewal in Oct.  I had to threaten to turn all of this over to the Texas Attorney General to get my money back.

The grammar in that message is appalling. I can hardly understand what is being said.

Even if they had two servers running at the same time, it doesn't explain how even one of the servers started to take money that wasn't due.

I am seriously thinking of contacting my credit card company to see if they can prevent any money going to them in the future.

Are we sure DAZ hasn't been hacked by Nigerian scammers or something?

The grammar is appalling, and so is the content of the message, if I understand it.  Which I might not, given how poorly it's written.  I wonder if Zendesk is in India or something.  It might explain why the responses were so canned and inappropriate.  They're following a script, and when the situation is not covered by the script, oy.

They are still denying that they there were "zombie memberships" - ones that were cancelled months ago and have been suddenly resurrected. I find it hard to believe that all those who complained had just never noticed the monthly charges since the new web site went live, and all of them suddenly noticed now.

And if that is what happened, it's still bad.  The "we give you a free month then it automatically renews unless you cancel" is the kind of thing you expect of shady sites selling diet pills and male enhancement.  Jeez.  It sounds like people didn't even sign up for it.  It was just given to them, along with the monthly billing.

Same here.  I'm glad the only credit card they had on file has been closed for more than 2 years and, since it was a federal government debit card, I suspect they are in a bit of trouble if they tried to charge something on it.  Especially, since the cardholder is deceased.

paganeagle2001 ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2013 at 4:47 AM

The problem they have is that they seem to think they can get away with it by offering another month of something that you don't want while not giving you a refund for the money they took without your permission.

Just contact your CC company and ask for a charge back. This way it will affect DAZ's credit rating. If their rating gets to a certain point they will lose the CC option to it's site.

If they lose that, then they are in trouble.

Sorry to do it this way, but the only way they will ever take notice of people is when their income is in doubt. They have your money, they are not interested in you as a person.

All the best.

But it does pay to read all stickies before complaining. And before someone says it, NO, companies don't send out emails to customers on how to cancel their services, you gotta dig to find it. No company would be that crazy.

Unfortunately it's standard with any paypal subscription. I just got renewed for $10 skype subscription.... something that I haven't used since 2010 and didn't set to renew... and I had to do the same procedure. And I spent 15 minutes scouring the site before having to go to google to find the page because it was buried on the skype site.

How the mightly have fallen, can't they just admit that they made a mistake.  They know what happen, according to a baldy written response.  They know at what point they stopped the process so therefore they should know who has been charged wrongly in the first place so just refund everyone involved.

To the compare their procedure with Amazon is pitiful.  I have yet to be charged by Amazon for something I did not order and I doubt, if they did, their response would be to send me another one for free.

Boy am I glad I stopped buying from Daz in 2011, now if only I could delete my whole account with them but there does not seem to be a way.

And chargeback link probably won't work because they won't do it if you improperly closed your account, that's not fraud or identity theft.

That's part of the problem.  People who DID follow that procedure found their PC memberships resurrected, months later.

And when they tried to cancel again, they got a "fatal error" message.  (As I did.)

And when they contacted Zendesk to get it fixed, the reply they got back was a copy-paste of the same message posted in that sticky.

That's why I'm wondering if Zendesk is outsourced to a country where people don't speak English well.  It was like talking to a computer.  Canned responses based on keywords in your complaint.

Like I said in my post, I haven't used Skype since 2010, and I got charged a top up. Sometimes, it really does come down to personal responsibilty to ensure you closed your account correctly instead of blaming DAZ. But in this case, you should probably blame paypal since that's the entity that actually did it.

The PayPal subscription is something new, if that is the case. I was in the PC for almost 10 years and I always paid by PayPal. Never once did PayPal just take the subscription fee when it was due. I always had to renew manually. The change sounds as if it is due to the new site software.

I have also belonged to other places where the subscription has not been automatically taken. Any experience with any other company is irrelevant and it is very sad when one has to look at bad company policy to justify something happening at another company. I guess some companies just don't value their customers at all and it is very apparent which companies they are.

By the way, I am also a Prime member here and I doubt very much if Renderosity will just take the fee when my current subscription expires.

It's so sad to see the DAZ's current state.

I just cancelled my PC membership - it SHOULD have cancelled automatically a week ago (I no longer trust a valid CC with DAZ and my old one in DAZ's vaults - a card which for some idiotic reason I cannot remove from DAZ's system - is no longer functional so it can't auto-renew), but apparently even that is not working. Maybe I could have skimmed some days or weeks or months free without paying a membership, but the Plat Club is in such a state, that I rather opt out from that mess than remain a member. I was a PC member for 8 years. Time to move on.

Yes, thanks again for the advice and the loss of downloads would be one of the disadvantages of closing the account completely.  I have a number of backups but you don't really know if you have a good diaster recovery plan until there is a diaster.

In truth I have already stripped my Daz account of any personal and deleted my Credit Cards but it appears that deleting the card details just means they do not appear in my account.  If I have read the official response correctly Daz still retains the details.

I'm just no longer happy with Daz having the details particularly when I no longer shop there.  It is not this issue alone that has brought me to this point the farce of the web site and all the rest has just made me uneasy.

I may be over reacting but the Daz that exists today does not appear to be the Daz I shopped with some years ago and that is the company I gave my C/C details to.

The problem with the instructions on how to cancel a subscription are that many of us cannot follow them because we don't have a subscription in our accounts to cancel.

Many of the people complaining had precisely this issue and had to open a support ticket to get sales to cancel their subscriptions.

Months later they are being charged.

You can't blame the consumer in this case. Shoddy coding is responsible. Not a failure to follow instructions.

Here's the deal.  It's really simple for DAZ to issue refunds for these charges.  They get a settlement statement for every credit card processed.  Every.  Single.  Credit.  Card.

They know EXACTLY who got double and triple charged.

What they are counting on is that 75% of people never even check their credit card statements.  They'll never know they were charged by DAZ.

It's not an error.  It's a source of income for an unethical company with a cash flow problem.

Proof please. Otherwise, you know exactly what type of speech that is... you know you can get sued over.

I deal with credit cards every day at work, and without fail I get a report of every card billed, everyday. I have to manually go thru it to balance the books as well.

It is very easy to see who got billed for what, when, where, why, and how much.
