Thanks I am pretty pleased on how that series came out the metal shaders in Reality really work well I tried also to 3Delight them yuckkk LOL but I was able to get one decent 3Delight render and for 10 minutes render time who can complain LOL

Have to agree.

I did a terrain render in carrara the other day and while I liked the results, I couldn't help wondering what it would have looked like in Lux, LOL.

I am prolly going to go back to 3Delight for some rendering because I do see a slight improvement to UE lighting and times are much faster but Lux will mostly be be the primary engine. I am also looking forward to the Reality update so I can try the newer luxrender engines...

Unlike Poser I have never been happy with any of the lighting in DS with 3delight, which kinda sucks as the full, commercial version of 3delight is a really powerful renderer. I have seen a couple or artists in the gallery here that get freakin amazing results with it. Guess it's good as I'd have to stop posting in this thread if I wasn't using reality, LOL.

LOL, funny, but I went with grain/noise on purpose since it was part of the filter effect and now that you mention it, I could have just stopped the original in lux sooner, LOL.

I feel I have gotten some nice renders with it but Lux is much better overall it gives much more of a realistic protrait... I tried rendering those ship cabin renders with 3Delight they looked like crap...

LMAO indeed you could of....

Some nice stuff here lately, wish I had something to share.  Maybe I'll dust off Daz this weekend just so I feel like I'm doing something.

I've spent the past two weeks very, very slowly learning my way around Cinema 4D and Vray (and Maxwell render, and Mental Ray, and Indigo...I have a million different trial versions installed right now).  Tried out Carrara first and it was nice, but I figured if I'm learning something new why not just go all out and work with one of the big boys.  Only complaint is that I can't find any Lux plugins.

Have you looked at Blender (free) which can also use Lux Render I believe... Would be interested if you have, as when I get some time (when do I ever!) I'd like to have a go at learning it... seems to be a big following, and so far all that have tried it seem very positive about it. If you have, I'd be interested in your opinion compared to the other 'big boys'... `¬)

3Delight is just as "high-end" a renderer as Lux, or V-ray, or Mental Ray, or whatever. Happy Feet 2 and District 9 were rendered in 3Delight.

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sat, 19 January 2013 at 11:11 AM

One of the reasons why I developed Reality was to bring a certain type of workflow to the Studio and Poser market.

While you can get very good results with a traditional renderer, you need to be an expert in shader design to do so. The people who use 3Delight, or anynother renderer, for motion pictures employ an array of shader designers who work for a couple of years on compiling shaders.

On the other hand, with Lux, if you want to have believable glass you just have to select Glass from the Reality material types and you get gorgeous, volumetric, physically accurate glass.

It's a matter of workflow. Either study the Renderman programming language for a few months and practice shader writing for a few years, or select a material from a menu :)

Cheers.

I think that may be the commercial version of 3Delight unlike what is included with DS but I have managed to get decent renders prior to using Lux I just like the results I get

I have to agree with Paolo Reality makes it simple...

Having said that its nice to have both. For example the 3Delight render I posted a link to a few posts back took 10 minutes vs the 16 hours it probably would of needed due to all the convert to light which is one of the items that really add time to a lux render..

I played with Blender a few years ago but I guess I wasn't as motivated as I am now and gave it up pretty quick. When I was researching this time everything said C4D had the easiest to learn interface,  and I believe it.  It's so easy to find and use the tools you need and I'm picking it up much faster than I expected.

But in these days of Youtube it's alsoa lot easier to find info on any program.

Quote - [quote lasserine] Great images.

Wish I could get the skin to look like that.

I don't see why you can't.  In my image I used Dublin with her skin. I made NO changes just applied everything to V4, added clothing, hair, Callad's light, floor and walls. Followed the suggestions for the lighting in the guilde and that was it.  It was fool proof. :) If I can do it, anyone can.  Just ask Callad.. hehe

Sorry, I must of missed the lighting guide, or im blind.  Did Callad upload her big light mesh somewhere?

Nice legs Callad.

Great images CSMC.

I am using a single sun/sky in a render, and the skin comes out looking strange.

callad ( ) posted Sat, 19 January 2013 at 6:02 PM

@ Lasserine

Sun is very tricky to get right and it seems to erase skindetail. I mostly use IBL with a tad of sun or a very big meshlight as virtual 'clouded sun'.

Here is the link to the mesh props:

http://www.sharecg.com/v/66908/browse/11/Poser/RealityLight-mesh-props-floor-with-curved-wall.

It also has a lil' guide on how to use it. The objective was to create a 'white set' but you can also use the light props in outdoor scenes as 'filler lights'.

Hope this is what you are looking for :)

Try this with a camera, even a camera phone. At midday ask a friend to stay in full sun light and take a photo. You will see how hard is to make people look good in that light. Try it for fun. Thensin is a harsh light with very high contrast that is not very flattering.

The same is in Lux.

This is very true Paolo, Real sun has very harsh shadows and seem to erase all detail from real skin too.

I guess that's why professionals use a reflector when shooting in the sun, right?

reflector

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sun, 20 January 2013 at 8:58 AM

Yes, professional photographers very rarely use the sun directly to shoot people. Reflectors and diffusers are commonly employed to soften the light and produce more flattering effects.

Is that all my sci fi renders are taking 6 to 8 each but I think thats due to all the panels coverted to light...

That does account for speed loss, also the fact they do not generate much light, so Luxrender must take many, many samples to 'enlight' your scene.

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sun, 20 January 2013 at 12:02 PM

The render times are influenced by the speed of the machine. I suspect that Callad's machine is simply faster, Bob.

It's like the island renders they took quite a while as well over 12 hours for one of them

I don't know if any of this is exposed in Reality yet, but there is a way to tell Lux not to trace light paths or shadow-ray tests on a lamp: http://www.luxrender.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7480&start=70#p81984
