Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 31 12:41 am)
Nope.
You want it to move in Poser, you have to rig it in Poser.
(Or Studio)
It's really not hard to rig something mechanical like a car in Poser:
Import each part of the car separately.
Parent each part to the body of the car in the hirarchy editor.
Press "create new figure" button.
Load that new figure from "New Figures" Runtime.
Switch of "bend" for all bodyparts and move the joint centers to where you want them.
Set limits if desired.
Use the dependency editor to create ERC if you want all the controls to be in the body actor.
Safe as a new figure.
Rigging a realistic human figure can take days, but a car is usually done in an hour or so at most unless you want to add some really fancy animation controls.
(Sorry to threadjack a little but it's on topic)
First, thanks Joe...I'd been hunting the net for a week looking for this exact information!
Now my problem. I'm trying to create a simple figure in the method you describe above, just a metal snake 5 segments long with simple ball joint bends at the joints. It's just 5 cylinder segments, each the child of the one before it (like you would expect a snake to look).
Everything works as you describe, through the hierarchy editor, create new figure, edit joint centers, etc. Then when I save the final figure and try to reload it, only the 2 end segments are visible. The center 3 parts are invisible. They show up as body parts, and manipulating them moves the end segment I can see that is their "child" as if they're still there, but they're nowhere to be seen. I don't have any overlapping geometries and everything is checked "visible" in their properties.
Any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance.
Try with PropViever 3 (ShareCG) to convert 3ds to obj format and then import obj into Poser.
PropViever supports 3ds keyframes and so, it puts all the elements of the model in the correct place. Most of the times it works, but sometimes it fails and leaves the parts glued or in wrong place. Until now I don't know why, some 3ds mystery secrets ???
In either case each part of the 3ds mesh has a group name in the exported obj format.
Stupidity also evolves!
Thanks, but this thing is made entirely within poser itself. It's just 5 cylinders parented up, and when I mash the create figure button, I get a perfectly fine figure in the "new Figures" folder. But if I try to save THAT figure again after texturing, adjusting joints, whatever (or even if I don't adjust anything), it then vanishes except the piece on either end.
BUT they still show up in the body part list, rolling the dials still moves the 'ghosts', etc. I even plowed into the cr2 manually and nothing is set hidden...I just don't know where they're off to.
Just off the top of my head here, I would double check the body part names. When I've had trouble with parts not showing up it has had something to do with the part name in the cr2 and the part name in the obj not matching exactly. I remember Poser adding numbers after the figure and part names (like :2 and :3 ) each time you save but I can't remember if that caused a problem.
You have to make sure that before you click on 'create new figure' that you have the parent selected in the hierarchy editor. If you have any of the children selected instead, that's all that is going to show up on the stage.
If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

Okay,
So I've been rigging a car in 3DS Max 2013. I want to export it with all my animations that I have set up and so forth for Poser.
Is there a way I can have everything Port over to Poser and not loose any of my data? So far when I port it all over, nothing happens. The parts are all fused to the body of the car, and the wheels don't move and the doors won't open.
I have a theory, that if I import these as "Seperate" parts, will the animations still be intact to Poser? I'm hoping. Spent alot of time on this and trying to get it right. It's my best creation so far, and really want to get it working.
Thanks again all. This is it for the night, hopefully, LOL.
