Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 09 4:28 pm)
Quote - You did check the manual, right? There is a complete breakdown of each node with a brief description of all the attributes. It is a start.
The manual usually reads like this:
"The subsurface skin node provides subsurface visibility for the skin in which you use it on".....
or
"This color node is responsible for adding color to the material"....
or...
"The multiply value multiplies the values of both nodes"....
.....
A proper manual would say something like this:
"hey want to see something cool? Add this node and this node and this node.... See how X node works with X node? See the result? The effect?"...
***"want to see subsurface skin in action in ten various different ways? Look and be amazed, combined this node & this node and watch how amazing the skin looks"...
I wrote an extensive thread about skin shaders, doing comparisons with the new nodes, at RDNA.
http://forum.runtimedna.com/showthread.php?64789-Which-node-SubsurfaceSkin-or-Scatter-Blinn
From that, most people concluded that my setup with Scatter + Blinn was the best. That is why it is in EZSkin that way. If you want to use the SubsurfaceSkin setup, it's in that thread.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
This is important - I summarized in that thread what I saw as the differences. Before you go doing all my work again, you should recognize that you're going to see problems with the subsurfaceskin node as follows:
A quick review of the differences, I would say:
The specularity is the biggest difference. I could not tune the one to match the other. The response to changes in angle are just altogether different. The KS_Microfacet embedded in the SSS acts more like the Glossy node, producing a sharper, flatter highlight. I'm not for or against it, but I'm sure not used to it. This is my assessment when seeing the skin front-lit. When you see it lit from behind, the rim lighting of the Blinn is far more realistic. But I'm not showing that here.
The scatter color of SSS is distinctly not red. It is the color of Caucasian skin. The scatter color of Scatter set to Skin1 or Skin2 is distinctly red.
Also, the attenuation of scattering in the SSS node is about half the default of Scatter / Skin1 or Skin2. I actually came to realize that the default scale (1.0) of the Scatter node gives too much scatter, although it is the right color, IMO. So I increased the Scatter scale to 1.75 and got much better results. It looked a lot less "waxy".
Comparing the back-lit scatter (glowing ears) the SSS node is almost a total loser compared to the Scatter node. But, again, I did not demonstrate that here.
So - front lit, I'd say these two are both good - use whatever you like.
For rim lit, or back lit, it's not even close. I will demo those, too, when I have time.
[Edit] Oh, one other difference - the SSS node makes bump disappear more than Scatter does. Fine bump details are harder to see with the SSS node. In other words, its response is less dependent on the direction to the light source. Good or bad? I don't know. The bump maps we use in Poser are so far from reality I have no idea which response is more correct.

Bagginsbill this is beyond perfect, thanks. These threads are very informative and the screenshots were EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Oh i see... I'm definitely trying to avoid the waxy look.

I need some coffee and i'll meditate on the above advice for an hour or two and experiment. ***
On a side note, it would be ideal if there was some kind of chat room where conversations like these go on 24/7.
The renderosity chat room was designed perfectly for professional colloboration but is plagued with casual non-3d discussion. This makes it hard to sort through all the convo looking for 3D discussion. Anyways.

I already checked that website out, the interface is not as clean or as pro as the rendo chat. I've checked out numerous others but none of them have that feature where you can show a thumbnail image in chat from browse or url.
I've accepted the rendo chat as it is. At least I tried lol.

Quote - Deviant Art chat doesn't have enough poser users. However deviant is good for getting critique and has a nice rating system. They also have huge gallery of poser renders of all flavors.
and a humongous community there with every group available under the sun from 3d modeling to materials to what ever you can come up with.....groups out the wazzoo.
it has plenty of amazingly talented poser users.nods that are always happy and willing to share their knowledge.

I post most often to my Deviant Art page rather than here on Rendo and there are quite a few groups that I follow that are Poser artists. As for the SSS node versus the Scatter node--the latter is much, much better with it's results. Definitely study that thread at Runtime DNA, it's an excelllent thread.

That I would not know about. I don't do Chats, I read forums either here or at RuntimeDNA where people have posted node setups that I can save and study. I have not done a chat here at Rendo for years.

if you are looking for a place to discuss poser and making your renders better, you already found it. the forums here and at rdna are the best place hands down. I've never encountered a chat room that stays on topic with a focus as narrow as something like poser renders.
I have never even looked at the poser manual - everything you need to know is in these fourms or the people her can answer it - try search it works great and expand the dates - some of the stuff that will really help is pretty old.
Quote - Are you guys saying there are poser groups that are active in a chat room on devart?
at no time did either the two posts that replied before you posted that said that. Groups on DA with poser users do have plenty of information though. Tutorials etc.
as others have said. poser manual, rendo forum, rdna forum, etc.
I believe the "chat" thread was closed due to such posts about it. I hope this one is not used to continue that debate.

Why do words like 'Dog' and 'Bone' come to mind.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
Sorry, forgive me, I am bored at work and the forum is the only thing keeping me sane..................or is it.

First off, sorry for making a lot of posts recently, but I need help with this.
What would be the fastest way to use subsurface skin instead of scatter after applying EZSkin? I'm trying to switch out the node and hook up the equivalents, but i don't even know what they are. I'm going to keep experimenting but any advice would be helpful.
Was blinn even meant to be used with Subsurface skin node? I don't see why not but I'm still new to all this.
Any speculation or even a small tip would point me in the right direction. I tried searching the web and the forum but wasn't successful.
