Subject: Where to get Poser from?

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Sat, 20 April 2013 at 3:36 AM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 1:46 AM

Please: Is Poser 9 the latest Poser, or is Poser 10 available yet?

Which is the best place to order it from? I am in England.

Poser 9 is the latest non Pro version. While Poser Pro 2012 the latest pro version is.

For service releases/updates you can check here: http://poser.smithmicro.com/updates.html

You can also order it from the same site. (http://poser.smithmicro.com/buy.html)

IIRC, I ordered my copy of PP2012 from there, as digital download version, as I'm on EU mainland.

From time to time there're special offers of the software, where you can get a very good bargain! You just have to keep an eye on things.

Amazon seems to have offers from time to time but not sure where they ship the artical from.

Im also in England and what I would not do is  buy a physical item from smith micro or any company that uses UPS as a courier, you will pay a fortune in the delivery charges, on top of the normal postal charges you will be landed with a big fat bill from UPS courier. I had purchased the physical disc on the upgrade to pp12 and had it sent to my parents as that is more convenient, I got a call from my dad saying he had to pay UPS another amount of money or they wouldnt hand it over (at the doorstep) it was something like 30-40 quid,  this i believe to be the duty and their handling costs. So download is probably the way to go.

Tools:- Win10, Dell XPS8900, ZBrush, Marvelous Designer 11, Hex 2, PSP8. PSP 2019 Ultimate, DAZ Studio, Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Filterforge 11, flowscape,  Classic UVMapper, and several headache tablets.

I remeber a thread just after Poser 9/2012 was launched along the same lines.  Some unsuspecting purchasers waited a week of so for their physical order to be delivered only to find it was an expensive way to buy.  I don't think UPS was the only compant mentioned either.  Download is the fastest and cheapest way.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

Someone wth 5629 posts in this Poser forum asks such a question?

"Is Poser 9 the latest Poser, or is Poser 10 available yet?"

Are we dealing with Rip Van Winkle?

But it still has to be shipped to the UK.

I'd wait until Poser 10 comes out this Summer or Autumn, Anthony; they usually have a good introductory upgrade price from previous versions; I used my Poser 6 serial to upgrade to Poser 8. (EDIT Currently Poser 9 upgrade price is for users of 6,7 or 8) Keep an eye on their Forum...

If you look on the shipping section of that link it says USPS delivers to international, the cost starts from 8.95 to 25.00 for express but also states at the bottom

"Please Note: International shipping fees do not reflect any customs clearance or brokerage fees that may be imposed by your country. If additional charges apply, it will be the responsibility of the receiver. "

This is where they clock up the charges and ask for the cash at your door step so not really a great deal when you think you might end up paying in the region of 70 pounds (basic postage (in pounds) of 5.88 plus 35.00 approx UPS charges,  when the actual item is 29.50 pounds)   :(

I only bought that way before as i had probs with downloading the p7 when it was out with smithmicro (or efrontier, i cant remember) and had a lot of hooo-harr and in the end they just sent me the disc at their cost.

aye found out the hard way about ups and amazon.

as to poser. I would either get pp2012 or wait for p10

as for purchasing from amazon...or other sites like that..make sure it is a valid legit dealer. there have been cases of people purchasing software and it being either pirated or just not the software.

I would guess Anthony has not upgraded for several versions.EDIT: from the gallery I would guess Poser 4 since I think they added transparency in 4. I started with 2

Anthony-you and Gerry A renders are in for a TREAT!! :-)

I bought Poser 2 and 3 directly from someone at a Metacreations Booth- 4 from Fry's Electronics- and I think 6!

My next was Pro2010-then 2012- online.

I started with Poser 3, which I bought in a shop in Manchester. I upgraded to Poser 4. I bought Poser 5, which acted badly because it needed more memory to run properly. So I stuck to Poser 4 until my next computer came with a system upgrade that Poser 4 would not run properly under. So I bought Poser 7, and later Poser 8, but mostly used Poser 7, under Windows Vista.

A few days ago I had to buy a new PC, and it came with Windows 8, which refuses to load Poser 7 (says that it is incompatible), so I am using my Poser 8, and I have Poser 9 on order. I have never used any of the Poser---Pro--'s.

Having terabytes of memory seems wierd :: I remember the old days before desktops came, when one million words of store was impossibly big, back in the Mesozoic in the late 1960's.

Hi Anthony! Good to hear from you. Poser 9 should be fun. I really enjoy the sub surface scattering. I was still able to use P4 until a few OS updates back.

If you have questions there are several threads on SSS on the Runtimedna forum.

I started in the Cretaceous- my first home computer came with 4 MEG of RAM-which I upped to 16 MEGabytes. I think the HD was also 20 MEGABYTES! Now people use video cards with 2 GIGabytes of memory-and TERAbytes of HD
