Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 04 12:42 pm)
From what I have seen of Genesis there is no doubt it has strengths in it's own right and I do like the way you can create creatures. For me it is not a question of how good Genesis is it is more that I do not want to use DS4 Studio as I have re-configure my PC as at present it will install and not run and then learn another program that has no real documentation. I would love to create some creatures but as a Poser user Genesis in it's present form is a no go for me.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
I always thought it was an interesting idea.
But it's too expensive and it doesn't work in poser on its own. From what I've been seeing, if they plan to do a new version every few years that may or may not have support for pervious versions, I can't justify it personally.
WARK!

Listen up. Genesis works fine in PP2014.
Create your Genesis figure in DazStudio. Export a cr2. Open your cr2 in Poser. Use Poser's funky new subdivision to smooth the mesh.
Now you can use Genesis just like any other figure, it'll even take V4 poses/animations.
It'll also work in earlier Poser versions, but without subdivision, you'll only have a lowres figure, that may nevertheless be useful.
I know some of you are adverse to even opening DazStudio, and indeed earlier versions used to cause me the notorious instant crash. But 4.6 seems to work just fine. Just think of it as a nifty little free format converter and ignore all the other baggage.
Still, I don't understand why DAZ don't offer cr2 files for download, now Poser has subdivision there is no need for all this DSON nonsense.
Summary:
Genesis = very useful Poser figure.
DazStudio = nifty free format converter.
DSON = nonsense.
It's all good...

Create your Genesis figure in DazStudio.
There is your problem, at least it is for a Poser user. Just not going to happen on my PC, in fact it won't
Poser 2014 is all I use and all I need and that does bury Genesis for me.

Yea, genesis gas great technology within daz studio. Unfortunately, a huge number of poser users will not go through these steps to make it work. You're underestimating the barrier it represents for a middle of the road user with limited time to make something fun.

Hi, my name is "No, Bad Kitteh, NOO",
what's yours?
And you aren't taking into account the limited content that is available for it, outside of medieval fantasy or club wear, not to mention the fact that over 95% of the characters are caucasian only.
Sorry, but I already have enough white girls.
The reason that DAZ doesn't offer .cr2s is ego - pure and simple. DAZ will NEVER admit to making a mistake. The company has made the decision to ride DSON down in flames.
This isn't the first time. Think back to how long the "revoluntionary" magnetfest of V4 lasted. 1 figure.

There is a bit more to it than that, as Genesis didn't work properly until Poser 9 SR3.
I suspect that DAZ will offer a Cr2 version sooner than later...

The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."That would be nice.
So if we use that method with importing the Cr2, the textures and clothes would still need DSON somewhow. A lot of steps to get the Cr2 clothed.
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
well it's a nice looking figure and maybe some clever people could make some automated script to do the hokey pokey for us one day. It's still worth thinking about.
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
maybe as WandW says, DAZ may even do it for us if it dawns on them to get motivated enough.

sorry. I just couldn't resist. YOu are quite right!
and it is too late to edit it.

Well, it's been only 2 years. Couldn't they have done a Gene 1.1 update instead?
To put it another way, what's going to be the life cycle of this new figure compared to the last one? Also, if all you have to do is export as a CR2, why didn't daz save poser users a little and done that step for them?

estherau,
"So if we use that method with importing the Cr2, the textures and clothes would still need DSON somehow. A lot of steps to get the Cr2 clothed."
But the Cr2 version of V6 works in the fitting room and in the cloth room as well. Sounds a good deal more fun to me than the same old confirm2V4 practice.
I have started to read your online series BTW, Angie is my kind of gal! The Daz stuff would bring a whole new dimension to it not to speak about Vue.. I am up the the episode where they got captured by the police!
Actually, the only reason I reinstalled Daz Studio was for the fbx export, which works well and easily - open Poser scene, export fbx, close Daz, done!
Then I noticed it comes with a free Poser figure: Genesis. And Genesis comes with a lowres version out of the box. For my specific needs this is incredibly useful. And it takes V4 textures - brilliant!
Clothing: granted, I may be a little odd because I've pretty much given up on conforming stuff - I can never get it to fit my characters, so I use Marvelous Designer for that which also gives me a first class cloth sim.
So, Genesis, it is not the Ultimate Figure as some would have us believe. But it is a very useful (for some) complimentary figure to V4M4. It works in Poser (and a once in a lifetime export from Daz Studio is hardly the Hokey Cokey). And it's free. What's not to like?
I LOVE Genesis. I also like all the other figures - each have their pluses and minuses, just like the different programs do. What I love about Genesis is the ability to morph into anything (well, within limits), and am sad to see the 2nd version splitting into Male/female/whoknowswhatelse versions because of that. Am very much looking forward to the new Hivewire3d "Dawn" character as well. More options are always good :)

Why so? You said yourself that more options are always good. Genesis 1 is still here and is not going anywhere. And soon we'll have Dawn too. IMO the most wonderful with V6 is that is fits so easy into V4 outfits. From one day to next my entire content is brought into the future uptodate. These are good times.

Because it means that clothing from one won't work with the others (male-female) or will require lots of money to work together. The beauty of Genesis is that everything worked on the same character. I would rather have seen an improvement on the base Genesis as the upgrade, rather than new separate creations for male and female. It takes away the whole concept of Genesis to me and I wonder if there will be much support for the Genesis characters now. There are other issues but I will stop there to avoid getting into what I don't want this thread to be :)

I think Gene 2 actually needs a male and female version. Because of body differences, things don't look right on one gender or the other.

You really don't need DAZ Studio for that.
Create your Genesis figure in Poser. Save as *.pz3.
Open your Genesis figure in CR Pro. Delete information about:
movieInfo, prop GROUND, actor UNIVERSE and controlProp FocusDistanceControl, all lights and all cameras, doc, illustrationParms, renderDefaults, faceRoom and set GeomHandlerOffset.
Save the file. Change the file from *.pz3 to *.cr2
Open your *.cr2 in Poser.
Use Poser's Unimesh to smooth the Genesis figure.
Use the free 'Inverse Kinematics for DAZ Genesis in Poser'-python script by Les Bentley and click 'Hip Handle'. Now you can use any poses from other figures for Genesis.
OPTIONAL: If you don't have CR Pro just save the *.pz3 as it is and change the file from *.pz3 to *.cr2. But it stores with information your *.cr2 file does not need.

Or I could just double click on V4 and start from there.

I don't even have V4 (nor V5 or 6).
Since "Genesis in it's present form is a no go for me" as you've written a few comments above mine why do you even bother to answer? I think you have not understood the title of this thread. I think there are already enough "I don't care about Genesis" threads now. Genesis works well for me in Poser since the last DSON Importer update (which is currently free again by the way). I don't mind the little workaround.
I mean getting rid of all the ambient in clothing, on skin or on wallpaper textures - that is less work than using Genesis and wait for the morph transfers? Without Snarly's script I would waste days for that. LOL

Why did I answer, well it could have been I was bored or it could have been that I felt that the process you described, while it may be valid, was well beyond the capabilities of a large number of Poser users.
Still point taken I will drop out and concentrate on all of the 'Dawn' threads.

Background: I animate in Poser and render in C4D. I create my own character morphs by pushing vertices by hand.
I recently gave DS4.6 and Genesis another go.
I think the reason for a lot of the heated discussions about Genesis is in regard to whether it's a worthy replacement for V4/M4.
My opinion: as a replacement for the classic figures, it's not very good.
But it's a very useful figure in it's own right.
It has some fabulous features and advantages, it also has some flaws, just like every other figure I've ever tried.
So I will use whatever figure will give me the best results for a given purpose. Sometimes you just have to try various alternatives out and see what works best.
