I really dont care about the Poser vs DAZ thing. I warned people about that years ago, and no one listened. "DAZ wont abandon its base!" Uh huh, sure...

It's nice to see someone trying to go cross-platform. Honest, it is. However this genre has been pretty-girl'ed to death, folks. How many of these interchangable ladies do you really need? Sweet Jesus, enough already! By the time folks get through with this, she wont be any different from any of the countless others that preceded her.

I'm sure she'll be amazing. But she'll also be visually predictable. And no amount of fancy, under-the-hood technology is going to change that. The renders of her will wind up looking like renders of the Vickies and Antonias and Stephanies and Barbies who preceded her.

It's just a shame that something radically new has to be wrapped up in the same tired persona.

Also agree.  Unless the figure is hideously ugly or hideously gangly (unless that is the intent) then I am more concerned with how it moves, how it is represented technically (as to what bit will or will not make content creation challenging) and aesthetics, like is the topology created in such a way that you can reasonbly morph it or paint on it and so on.

Its default shape, with all the tools and creativity at our disposal is really ephemeral.

I have to disagree, we have had so called realistic figures that just do not look apealing right out of the box and they have really gone nowhere.

and if you want to create content, wether poses or cloth or props you endup spending a lot of time with the base figure, having it attractive helps with that time. it also helps sell your product.

the general public looks for that model figure, I see girls all of the time wil smaller figures than Dawn that are size 0, or a size 1 all the time on Deviant art and model mahem. do tthey exist? of cource they do, do the tankers exist? sure they do, there are many sizes and shapes. but which one sells?

that is where you find your customers.

the content creator who is making a product and wants to sell it makes it as sexy as possible. wether it is a gun or cloth....

"There is nothing new under the sun". Obviously tho, it's what the Poserverse is content with ;).

There will be a male coming along eventually...I'm sure he'll be just as original. ;)

Let's face it - while humans come in all different shapes, there is still the basics and that never changes - two arms, two legs, etc. What ppl do with that is their own business and if the Poserverse still runs on pinups, then there's nothing really can be done about that, is there? ;). Always has, always will. Sex and beauty sells, much as some don't like it. We are humans after all....

Dawn will be whatever we want her to be.  :-)

My Dawn is going to be a feisty fashionista, who loves vintage clothing.  REALLY vintage -- like all the way back to pre-history vintage.  ;-)

Some days she may like to be a vampire, too, though.  Or Lucretia Borgia.

Seriously, excepting the professionals who do this for a living, don't the rest of us have fun with these figures?  Bring a fantasy to life?  We can't time travel, for real, but our 3D people can.  I can't be a cowgirl in the Old West, but I can render one.

And art is trendy, right?  That's why we have the Impressionist Era, the Art Deco Era, the pre-Raphaelite Era (my favorite) and so on and so forth.

I had a point in there somewhere.  Oh, well -- I guess what I'm saying is our art reflects the mores of our society.  And our society likes pretty girls and pretty guys.  Good thing "pretty" covers a lot of territory. :-)

I love me some Modo!  :-)

Hi, Sean.  Good to know that you're still lurking about.  I remember the "there's no split" days very well.

Honestly, my favorite figures are made by Nursoda.

I never got that heavily into V4 because of the INJ system and the sheer headache of exporting it to modo and Lightwave.  I think I did a handful of V4 renders before I dropped it.  And I never installed DS past 2.4, if I remember correctly.  2.3 maybe.  2.2?  Somewhere in there, I threw in the towel.  (Not that I haven't seen enough hollers for help and screenshots of the more recent versions.)  After working in modo, Genesis is a yawn, nothing I haven't encountered elsewhere, just packaged differently for dial spinners.  Gen3 was the last "normal" figure set that caught my fancy.

But I have an interest in Dawn.  I think this may finally be a next step that I might actually use.  It seems to have the right specs and shouldn't be too difficult to export. At least, pre-release info has led me to hope so.  Then again, I'll rig it in modo (with the Poser dev figure as reference) and probably make most of the clothes I'll use there with my own morphs.  Not your typical buy out the store user frenzy.... I might even contribute if life permits.

Eric Walters ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2013 at 11:49 PM

Thanks for the images! I'm opting out of the realism discussion-except that the proportions are certainly closer to those I am used to seeing. Beauty? Frankly-it will attract a lot more interest than making average looking people. Those can be handled with morphs anyway.

vagabondallen ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2013 at 11:53 PM

First, let me apologize for wading into debates that were drawing attention away from Dawn. It won't happen again.

Second, I've been using Poser since Fractal Design Poser. I tried DS out when the first version was released. I've never really tried it since, but with my recent computer upgrade, I installed DS 4.6 and I plan to explore the whole Genesis thing for myself. It's a lot like the notion that someone can only be a Mac or a PC user, or a Cubs or White Sox fan, or a Republican or Democrat, etc. Not all of us are strictly one or the other type people.

But enough about all that. Let's talk about Dawn some more.  A lot of people are talking about how she looks nekkid. I'm a storyteller, who uses Poser to render artwork to tell a story. I'm most interested in how well Dawn wears clothes, and whether she'll have practical, useful, adaptable clothing to wear. Please, content creators, I'm begging you. Include adjustment morphs whenever possible, so shirt A can tuck into most pants, Pant B can lay over most shoes, and Jacket C can fit over most shirts. I tend to fill my virtual closets with clothes that work well in a well-stocked wardrobe. I don't have much room for a closet full of bridesmaid dresses. Am I making sense?

Oh, and on the subject of the most prolific items of clothing out there, I've noticed a few patterns emerge.

  1. Many clothing items are motivated by profit and that means many items are modeled on the old adage that sex sells.

  2. Many clothing modelers follow patterns that allow them to avoid problem areas on a figure. Shoulderless, thighless, wristless pieces come to mind. If Dawn has fewer problem areas, she'll get better coverage.

  3. Many PS/DS users, but not all, tend to either work with what's readily available, which is why we ended up with NVIATWAS to begin with, or learn enough to break away on their own and stop waiting for the marketplace to give them everything they want. In some cases, that means they move on to Modo, Blender, Maya, ZBrush, and what have you, and if they don't turn around and start making and selling content themselves, they at least stop pushing for it from others.

JoePublic isn't the first person I've known to heavily rely on an old standard and learn the skills to get what he wants out of it. (Unless JP IS that other person, LOL!) Others have and will continue to do what it takes to achieve their goals. Even I'm learning to model to have clothes available to me that no one's made yet.

All that being said, I can't wait to see Dawn. And in a year, I hope to see lots of stuff for Dawn. Even more than that, I hope to see a male equivalent. Nothing benefits this segment of the larger 3D industry like competition. It's the single greatest driver of innovation. (Darn, I've gone and made a blanket statement again. Someone's just bound to argue this point, too.)

Folks....

These are all tools.  Dawn is the nail that you hit with the software hammer of your choice.  She's a TOOL.  She is a nice looking nail to be sure, but like most nails, only a small portion of the total will be visible.  Whether it be via morphs, clothes, LAMH fur ( :-) ), props in the forground, textures, what have you.

There is absolutely no sense in getting emotionally engaged positively or negatively to the tool.  V4 doesn't have to be replaced, Genesis isn't demon spawn, and even the base Poser figures can be made to look nice.  Use the tool(s) to get the job done, advocacy is irrelevent.

Dawn is definitely a great figure, and she'll fit in my library just fine.  I like the crew involved, and I can see that there is more potential for her than the other "hopefuls" for the Poserverse in recent memory.

Quote - > Quote - Specific question: there are Merchant Ressource that are allowing freebies and others that don't allow freebies - what are we allowed to do with the Dawn texture ?

The resource kit / texture that comes with Dawn will be available for merchants to use to create "for-sale" products, but not freebies, as we want to help protect those merchants who do decide to support her. We'll most likely release a different resource kit for freebies down the road.

Quote - Another question: will there be a Tutorial Section at Hivewire3D to help people understand the different ways to create clothes and morphs and how to port them to the other software ?

Yes! We plan on creating several, and hopefully working with community members to create more, as well as linking to others from throughout the community over time.

Thank you for taking the time to answer!

And hooray for the tutorial section!

Everyone who knows my username knows what I feel about a certain company, but I have kept that out of this thread as I wanted to keep people interested in the subject at hand, Dawn.

Yes, I know it can be frustrating waiting for something new to appear, the speculation etc. but we will just have to wait a little bit.

Once she appears, you can do what you want with her.

Her base will be free, a good price, so whats the problem.

People will make morphs for her, so whats the problem.

Content will be made, so whats the problem.

The more interestiung thing that has come out is that people on BOTH sides are getting involved.

Tutorials have been prepared to help BOTH sides with conversions.

People have already started making things for Dawn and she's not even here yet!!!

That is what I'm interested in. I've been with this thread since the beginning, all messages have been read, information gleened and given in a way for people to know whats going on.

I will be using Dawn, I will be doing things for her, and I do appreciate the things that are already in production, like the dress done by Connie.

All the best.

Please, please, please...just ignore it.  The pattern I'm seeing is people start veering off in undesirable directions, but it dies down pretty quickly.  Then, hours later, when the subject has changed for the better, someone jumps in saying they hate this kind of talk and it doesn't belong here.  Which may be true, but it serves to resurrect the topic.  And it starts all over again.

And yeah, I'm doing it myself now, I guess.  I'll shut up now.

All I know is that I cannot wait to get my hands on Dawn so that I can start making content for her. I am really looking forward to that. :)

Some nice pixie outfits would be nice as well.

All the best.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Never found anything that could properly do shoe conversions, so anything with shoes specifically for Dawn will be a dead cert for me.
