Quote - An old friend is running a competition over at DA and asked me to make a sword as one of the prizes, this is just a tester to see if I could remember how :)

I'm not too much of a sword guy, but those look outstanding!

If you're into another request, I could really use a machete-sized khopesh with good materials. Found one the other day but it was a mess and needed all new textures.

Pretty please =D

Awww... The reality Shader email got me all excited. I thought Dawn had risen early!

ha ha ha

By the way Paolo, I've got some blame to push on you! Since working in Reality/Lux, I've become quite the lighting nit-picker when watching movies! Kinda ruins the fun, and its all your fault.

All in good fun of course ;-)

I know, I "ruined" movies for my wife too :) Not to mention the times that I yell "out of focus" to the TV :)

Yes, the Dawn shaders are getting there, ready for the big launch on the 9th. Both versions of Reality are ready.

More details later.

Cheers.

There's that word again! "later" Argh! Come on August 9th!

The lighting bit was a good laugh. I really went nuts watching Fringe, when the same character is facng his/her alternate version and each of their faces facing the camera is lit differently. Green screen Fubar!

I even balked at Indiana Jones the other night. My wife just rolls her eyes while quietly chanting 'Shut up!"

Or so I'm imagning in my head right about now...

The whole point of watching a movie is to forget reality (pardon the pun) and enjoy the fantasy. That said, I kept thinking while watching the end of Fast & Furious 6 (where they are chasing the plane) that no runway in the world is that long!

Vin Weisel! R3 for DS ready really??? The thing that drives me nuts is huge plot holes. Like in under the dome. One week they try to nuke the dome and all life around it is destroyed everyting is ashes. The following week all life outside is back as if it never happened..

Took me a while, but I finally got the site to load and make it all the way through checkout.  I only got the free model, couldn't afford anything else with this damn federal furlough, but I'll play with her tonight and have some renders up soon.

BradHP ( ) posted Fri, 09 August 2013 at 5:22 PM

On my first test run of Dawn I thought the skin glossiness from the ACSEL shaders was a bit too high. I dropped it down to 6000 from 8142.

Not a big fan of the hair that came with her.  Been trying a bunch of different settings and can't get rid of the plastic look. Didn't try the ACSEL shader for that because the description shows it's for the brown material that I'm not using right now.

What I like so far: she's smooth. No weird bends or creases in her arms.  When I applied one of the poses, none of her parts went through herself like always happens with Gen and V4.

Since I didn't get any of the extras there isn't much more I can do with her right now.  Base model is nice (especially for being free) but for now I can do a lot more with V4 and Gen.  I really like the attitiude and philosophy of the creators, they seem to care about the customer and stand behind the product, so I'll keep watching for new developments and support them in the future when I can afford to.

First render should be done in maybe 2 hours.

Is Dawn available anywhere else, like Rendo or rdna? I'm getting concerned about having so many accounts on peoples' web sites; that, and I'm getting beacoup junk mail everytime I read on a site 'we won't sell your information' and yet, more and more crap comes to the house...

I just d/l her myself thanks for the fast reply thats too bad we can prolly use obj hair and manually adjust

Edit just installed in the words of miss swan "She looka lika man" when you 1st load her ugggggglyyy! I thought the big buzz was going to be able to use v4 and older content unlike Daz who is forcing ppl to change for G2 dissapointing that nothing works. Jury's still out if she will stay in my runtime will see what freebies come out. Speaking of Daz they released the new beta version of studio forcing ppl to use DIM to D/L everybody is pissing me off so far..

I picked her up too, and I must digress, she's very, how to say, 'girl next door'. I like her posability, but her mesh kinks up Real Bad if you try to get her into a squat for instance. (flexability testing at the moment). Cooking my first test instance and will post momentarily.

Not sure if the Studio/Reality settings came with her, but ACSEL didn't pick anything up. What was there was very flat, gloss-wise, with top coat maxed out.

What I post will be my settings, FYI.

Just a real basic test run with the base Dawn figure and texture. Yes, V4 clothes don't readily fit without major mesh smoothing trickery (don't even bother with autofit--it won't recognize her anyway and makes a hash of things). It's taken me about a half hour to get a shirt, undies and a hair piece on her. Nice figure, but its an awful lot of work without upgrading to her own wardrobe, and that's the kicker.

At least she was free to evaluate...

Looks like Dawn's legs got badly sunburnt.

Anyway, I've been looking at all the pre-release previews for several weeks now, and then finally tonight all the official stuff. And I gotta tell ya, fwiw, she's just not doin it for me. I'm a bit, well, unimpressed. Today's official unveiling has done nothing to change my mind. A few renders have made her look somewhat attractive(a few but mostly not), but she has absolutely nothing on V4(or 5 or 6). And I'm still with V4.

The vast majority of all the vendors' custom V4 characters look way more beautiful. At least those that are meant to be beautiful. Of course there are many characters made for the purpose of being some evil, grotesque, monstrous or demonic type creature, but with those unfortunate exceptions, all the rest are much more attractive.

Supposedly Dawn is engineered to have several advantages, but realistically, it will take a while(who knows how long?)to get all the bugs and kinks worked out. Victoria 4 has the advantage of being a very mature product that with the aid of all the fixes by some talented vendors here at Rendo has reached her true potential. What can be accomplished by V4 alone is now amazing! And that is why I'm still working with V4 and have had no motivation or incentive to move to anything else. I can't remember the last time I dloaded anything new from DAZ. And with all the bugs & not ready for primetime status of 4.6, and the infamous DIM, forget it!

superboomturbo ( ) posted Fri, 09 August 2013 at 10:40 PM

One of these days I'll do a Lux/UE side by side for you, Bob. ;-) I haven't used UE in well over a year (maybe two. Haven't bothered to check!) UE can look good, but nothing like Lux.

But I get you on the Poser side of things. Even though she has a Daz Studio version, the clothes-incombatibility are a bit of a deal-killer for me. I've got enough figures that do just fine, with goodies that Do work without having to hand edit and pose them to death.

Really though I'm a bit bummed out right now, so much that I've lost my drive to do any more rendering for the night. I really did have high hopes for Dawn... Sigh...

Who knows. Maybe they'll tinker with her a bit down the line, or we go the GenX route, but that kinda defeats the point with Dawn.

What to do, what to do :-/

I haven't seen this much hype leading to this much disappointment since The Dark Knight Rises.

Here's my first Dawn render.  And after this I'll probably lock her in the basement with Stephanie.  Used the ACSEL shaders. but turned the skin glossiness down to 6000.

Like I said with this and *&^% DS now starting to force ppl to use DIM  to d/l studio its a pretty shitty 3D day for me as well, but I got stories to tell so as a Reality user it does not affect me that much not to update studio to the latest beta. What may be sad is the need to use an "alternate" site to d/l what I should have the right to so I am not forced into using DIM if lets say we need future versions of studio to be compatible with R3 updated...

LOL @ the dark knight rises I wtched it a few weeks back on the movie channel yeah nothing special...

She's already out of my runtime....

More like the hype many years ago leading up to SW: The Phantom Menace. Ugh!

Now, I liked TDK Rises, couldn't quite compare with TDK, but still pretty good.

Anyway, back to work. My breaktime is over.

I found myself thinking much the same! Whoever their texture model was must have had one* hell* of a weekend before taking reference pics!! I'm not much of a base texture person anymore and use self-made on anything I pass to Lux (with this one exception).

And I'm with ya' on the wonders of V4. You pretty much nailed it across the board. There's little that can't be fixed with morphs or even a custom sculpt here and there, and that goes for the whole Gen4 line in my opinion. The only thing I really like with Gen5 characters is the ability to pack a lot of them in a scene--but even then--one can cram lots of Gen4's with reduced textures and such.

It's mighty tough to improve on perfection...

This whole experiment tonight had me thinking about George Lucas's constant efforts to screw up his previous work with tinkering and fine tuning. More often that not, it's just better off being left alone!

Add: Mark, great minds think alike LOL

I didn't hate DK Rises, just couldn't remember what I liked about it after it was over.  And IM3 was my favorite of the series.

I LOVED Dark City and haven't seen it in years.  Might have seen it on DVD once, but watched it many times on VHS when it first came out. I need to grab the director's cut on Blu-ray, just checked and it's really cheap.

superboomturbo ( ) posted Fri, 09 August 2013 at 11:33 PM

I snagged the blu-ray too last year on Cyber Monday or something. $9 if I recall. It's still one of my all-time favorites, as I have had the dvd version forever and wore out my VHS ver. ;-)

Do it, you owe it to yourself!

On IM3, I kept getting TDK Rises vibes, where he spent more time out of costume than in. It was alright, but left me wondering where the magic wandered off at times. A home viewing usually fixes my perceptions as those idiots with cellphones out ruins it for me everytime.

Rant completed. I'm really leaving this time
