Subject: Just Upgraded to Poser 10 and boy do i have questions...

CMKook-24601 ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2013 at 7:09 PM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 3:13 PM

First what does it mean when a cetain item is a "Light emitter"?

Where in the bloody blue blazes did the properties for lights go? (they aren't in the properties tab)

What is Apply Collision settings to children for and the check box in properties Collision detection?

and lastly I had poser 8 and up graded to poser 10, should I reinstall all my content from here and daz in to the Poser 10 Folder or is okay to just import the old poser 8 content folder?

I know its alot of questions i am just having Woah I just upgraded  A LOT shock...

If an object is a light emitter, it means that it is treated as a light source when using IDL.

I have the usual Poperties in the Properties tab for my lights; which ones are missing?

You can indeed add your Poser 8 content folder to the Library as an externl runtime.

In the Help>About Poser screen, make sure the version is 10.0.3.26066.  Of not, install SR3, found here...

okay so the light properties thing seems to have corrected it's self before nothing was showing up

and is IDL is in the render setings?

WandW ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2013 at 10:02 PM · edited Wed, 11 December 2013 at 10:03 PM

IDL is in the render settings.  I use the Render Firefly script under Scripts>Partners>Dimension3D, which in addition to giving control overmore parameters,  allows one to save and load custom render settings.

Speaking of scripts, you will need the MaterialMods>changeGamma script to set up most materias' transparency and bump maps to look good in renders using Gamma Correction, which set at 2.2 by default.  To use the script, use the value of 1.0, select "All props and Figures" and then "All of the Above" which will uncorrect the appropriate maps....

So when are you going to upgrade to Poser Pro 2014?

Online Now!

And, sorry to say, begin reading the manual.

no you aren't "sorry to say"... You opened a thread with a title about asking questions just to say that. which means you went out of your way to do so. if that was going to be your only advise then maybe you should have just skipped the thread no? I mean I thought asking questions is what the forum was for...

Thank you for your help I will do those :)

I must agree, this comment is devoid of information and smacks of borderline trollism.  It is the on-line equivalent of a shaking finger aimed a the OP's face.  Others were perfectly willing to help, but that seems to be a source of annoyance.  While asking for help is a shortcut, and apparently seems lazy to some, the OP is correct that without such questions this forum would be as dead as a dozen others.

hborre  is certainly one of the more helpful members of this forum, and is no troll.  😕

Perusing the manual is certainly good advice; I nearly suggested looking up collision detection there, but I didn't have time to check what section; see my sig as to why I'd check... 😉

I get that reading the manual can be helpful, but he could have been more helpful for one informing me that there was a full manual on the Disk (yeah that didn't occure to me at first.), I was thinking he ment the thin thing taht comes in the box, and he could have possibly suggesting a section (I found it btw).

The other thing I'd like to say is, yeah maybe asking questions is "lazy", but if some one asks me a question about a program and I know the answer I happily share it in conjuction with suggesting the manual or other tutorials. Fact is I feel I have a fairly decent handle on poser (or I felt I did), but I ran in to some stuff I'd not seen in my previous version... so I asked about them.

to WandW thank you for the advise I am toying with those settings now and the renders do look better and I will certainly look up collision detection in the manual.

if you can afford the 1 month fee, look at Mark Bremmer's poser 10 tutorials on Infinite Skills.

I came from Poser 6 (Poser 8 but rarely used, only bought that 2 months ago, and got the Poser10 upgrade deal, sweet!)

A lot of the tuts refresh the use of poser with some of the newer features. There are a couple ways to do Cloth simulations and I believe the Bullet physics uses the collision detection features, which Mark goes over rather well in his tutorials. Not sure it THIS is the collision ref you are looking at).

I tend to use poser as a wooden doll drawing-reference setup instead of a rendering solution. So there is a few features I rarely use, but I like the Bullet physics to make bodypart react more realistic to gravity.

Okay so here arequestions for something I couldn't find in the manual:

is there a way to check or uncheck all the light emitter boxes at once? Goting through each object and unchecking the ones i don't seems a bit tedious.

the other is , the sadows in the lighting set I am using are a tad too light, and I can't seem to figure out how to get them to be a bit darker with out fucking up the over all lighting scheme?

I tried to look up shadows but wasn't finding what I was looking for.

Thanks I will look in to that, though I may have to wait, I was fortunate to get Poser 10 on an IOU when poser 8 stopped working as it is

Get SnarlyGribbly's Scene fixer script; Very useful and free... 😄

http://snarlygribbly.org/3d/forum/viewforum.php?f=8

If you are using IDL and/or Gamma correction you need to turn your light intensity down, and likely use fewer lights...

EDIT; grab EZSkin while you are there too to  easily uitilize Poser 10's SSS on skin...

basicwiz ( ) posted Sat, 14 December 2013 at 8:07 AM

Assuming you installed to your C: drive...

C:/Program Files/Smith Micro/Poser 10/Runtime/Python/poserscripts/ScriptsMenu

You will then see the scripts as options under the SCRIPTS button at the top of the main Poser screen.

One word about EZSkin.... make sure you import the definitions you need before trying to use it. There are full instructions in the EZSkin2 user's manual.
