Subject: What render dimensions do you all use?

crystalmethodcaf ( ) posted Fri, 27 June 2014 at 8:52 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 3:25 AM

Hi all!  I've been playing with Poser for a while and I love the software.  I'm just curious what render dimensions you all typically use?  I know obviously the higher the better, but for the kinds of renders I do, I'm wondering if using render dimenstions of 1920x1080 (for example) is really worthwhile.  I typically just view them on my computer monitor, sometimes (rarely) on my 50" TV.

I know that if it's only, say, a 1024x768 resolution for example and I zoom in, it'll become grainy.  But if my monitor is at a 1600x1200 resolution, and I'm viewing a pic rendered with a 1920x1440 resolution, then all those extra pixels aren't needed from what I understand.

For an example, if I'm rendering a picture of a person with a tree in the background, would there be that drastic of a difference if I rendered it at 1200x900 instead of 1920x1440?  On the other hand, if I was rendering a scene with several people walking in the background in front of a store, then would I be correct in assuming that if the same picture is viewed at the same resolution (let's just say 1024x768 [I don't really use this res, just saying]), but one is rendered at 1920x1440 and the other at 1280x960, there will be a noticeable difference in the detail of the two pics?

I know how the resolutions affect TV and blu-ray viewing, I'm just not sure how much of that translates into the world of graphic design.  Thanks for reading!

for wallpaper i render at 1920x1080

i size my preview window at 960x540 when i'm at camera framng stage (rule of thirds), then render to exact size 1920x1080

Poser lets you set dpi, great feature, if you're selling prints on DA or Zazzle or similar, you'll need their pixel specs. Rendering book covers for create space needs 300dpi. book covers you usually need to add .25 inch to edges for full bleed space

My default resolution is 771x652. I know that is very strange. It fits my workspace and allows me to see the whole scene when rendered. I don't normally print my renders or use them for wall  paper or really anything but dust collectors on my hard drive so the odd dimentions don't really matter. When I am printing, I do use a much bigger size.

480 (W) x 640 (H) - because it fits into my visual novel otome game format

I render my final images rather large in the 1800 X 2700 range for potential inkjet printing. I may never print it but you can always downsize an image whereas you can't upsize it later. Images I put on the web are generally 900px on the largest side. Big enough to see but not so large it can be printed out without my permission.

600x600 for faster renders.  1200x1200 for other output.  I'm such a square.

For me, it usually depends on what it is for.

The highest resolution monitor I have is 3840x2160**, **but I do not always render at that size. For animations I sometimes do the final output size, and sometimes render them twice as large then run all the frames thru filters and then size them down.

for final print, 7000x5000

for final wallpaper, 2560x1280

for final web gallery, 1280x1024

bigger is not better. Matching the purpose is best.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

I usually render at 2500 X 1750 the reasoning here is that it generally renders fairly fast and I can scale up to 4961 X 3508 with very little loss in detail.  Seems odd but at 300dpi that is correct for ISO page size A3.  Most years I do an A3 photobook with the work from that year and a record of, hopefully, my progress.  With the monitor correctly calibrated the printed page looks good and it forms a nice record.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

4500x3200  - big enough for print but not so big as to make my photoshop files unmanageable (I usually have a million postwork layers which really bloats them).

Usually I render at wallpaper size, 1920x1200 for laptop, 2560x1600 for workstation, or occasionally double width 5120x1600 for laying across an extended desktop (two monitors).

Sometimes for demo/test renders, I aim for a size suitable for posting in the forum.

For animations, I generally use 720x480 (DVD widescreen) or 640x480 (DVD standard TV), but I may render smaller if the animation is especially processor-intensive or a lot of frames.
