Subject: Illogical Behaviour On The FreeStuff Upload Page

3dcheapskate ( ) posted Wed, 06 January 2016 at 9:43 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 8:12 PM

When you upload freestuff there are three sections to fill in.

Item Details Item Requirements Item Settings

There is a note saying '*All Required' alongside the "Item Details" heading

It took three attempts to get a successful upload. The first time I think it was because I didn't select a thumbnail (I'd assumed that it would be generated automatically, like in the galleries) The second time I think it was because I didn't specify Systems and Base Figures under Item Requirements (my item has no system/figure requirement, and there is no 'N/A' option for these)

Here's the illogical behaviour:

  1. When the upload failed there was no indication of this. I was returned to a fresh 'Upload FreeStuff' page - everything I'd entered had been deleted. ** - The logical behaviour would be to say "Upload Failed" with a reason, and to return you to the upload page with everything you'd entered to let you make corrections**

  2. I may be wrong, but it seems that all three 'Item Requirements' fields are mandatory.

    • If they are NOT mandatory then I think there's a bug in the webpage.
    • If they ARE mandatory then there should be an 'N/A' option for each. Also it should say '*All Required' alongside the 'Item Requirements' heading.
  3. When eventually I got a successful upload I was taken to the FreeStuff homepage, with no indication that the upload had succeeded. I had to go to my own FreeStuff page where I see the blue "You currently have freestuff pending" banner, but I also see my freestuff item - that's a bit confusing, is it pending or not? IWhen I then went to the What's New page of the Freestuff section I didn't see my item, so I assume that when you upload a freestuff item you can see it on your own freestuff homepage, but nobody else can see it until it's been approved. Wouldn't it make sense to explain this on the upload page?

I've mentioned all of this before. Hoping for a fix. :)

Thanks Kimberley.

Regarding my point (2) I've noticed that I can successfully remove the spurious 'Item Requirements' by going to my own freestuff page (where the pending item that I've just uploaded shows up) and editing it. So it looks like there's a mistake on the upload page which seems to think that they're mandatory.

Hey @3dcheapskate-- I'm having the programmers look into this issue. Thank you.

I'm just doing another freestuff upload - a chance to double check what I said in the OP...

Okay, I can reconfirm everything in the OP. Even with all seven mandatory fields (the ones under "Item Details") filled in the upload fails if all the "Item Requirements" fields are blank. Since all those "Item Requirements" fields are optional this is an error.

Also after a failed/successful upload you are taken to a completely inappropriate page:

  • after a failed upload you should be taken back to the "Upload Freestuff" page with everything you entered still there, and with a banner message saying why it failed.
  • after a successful upload you should be taken to your own freestuff page with a banner message saying that your item is pending approval, and that although you can see it the item won't be visible to anybody else until it is approved.

Hope that helps :)

Just tried to upload a new freestuff item.

I ensured that all the fields were filled in correctly (including the spurious 'Item Requirements') and that I had a thumbnail, image, and ZIP selected. I then hit the 'Upload Item' button at the bottom of the page and...

...I was taken to the standard 'Upload FreeStuff' page with all fields empty, no indication of whether the upload had succeeded/failed (it had failed - I viewed my own FreeStuff page and there was no 'pending' message).

Trying again...

Let me find out where we are with this issue. :)

Second attempt worked fine. I think I must have clicked the 'Upload Freestuff' button and not the 'Upload Item' button (see screenshot below). I think that having the 'Upload FreeStuff' button top right on the "Upload Freestuff" page is counterintuitive. Once I've filled in the data for my upload I usually scroll back up to check that I've filled everything in correctly, and of course the 'Upload Item' button has scrolled off the page. I then see the big green 'Upload Freestuff' button and click it, because that's exactly what I want to do, upload freestuff. But of course that'll take me to a page for entering data for a new freestuff item - it won't upload the freestuff item I've just set up the data for...

Hey @3dcheapskate- thanks so much for letting me know all of this information! So, the main issue you're having is when you upload a product, it doesn't let you know you've uploaded it? Also, it did not indicate that the freestuff was loaded successful?

So, you're stating that the first issue was occuring because you had been hitting the "upload button" instead of"upload item," correct?

Hi Hope,

The only problems I'm certain of (well, 99% certain ;o) ) at this stage are:

Point 3 from the OP (reworded): After a successful upload you should be taken to your own freestuff page with a banner message saying that your item is pending approval (this could also mention that although you can see it the item won't be visible to anybody else until it is approved). At present you're taken to the FreeStuff homepage, where you won't see your item since it's pending.

'Upload Item' and 'Upload Freestuff' buttons being confusing(as per my most recent post): although maybe it's just me that gets confused by them...

Points 1 and 2 in the OP may be just because I was hitting 'Upload FreeStuff' instead of 'Upload Item' after I'd filled in all the details, but I can't be sure. Next time I upload freestuff I'll check those points again.

I've just uploaded a new item - success first time. No need to fill in the optional fields. Problems 1 and 2 in the OP must have been because I hit the 'Upload FreeStuff' button instead of the 'Upload Item'

(I still think having the 'Upload FreeStuff' button (which deletes everything you've entered) that's always visible top right of the page , and an 'Upload Item' button (which uploads what you've just set up) that you can only see if you're scrolled right to the bottom of the page is a bad idea... ;o) )

Note: If you're UPDATING an existing FreeStuff item, then the behaviour is CORRECT - after clicking the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page you're taken to your own FreeStuff page with a green "Success! Your item was successfully updated." banner across the top.

This is the behaviour I would expect when you've just created a NEW freestuff item - except the words on the green banner would be different of course.
