Subject: Isn't Carrara Dead Only if We Let It?

NetWorthy ( ) posted Thu, 22 November 2018 at 12:09 PM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 6:11 PM

Since I've gotten back into posting images again, I've noticed a few disturbing things:

  • There is no Carrara forum moderator - gee, I miss Mark Bremmer!
  • There is very little Carrara forum activity.
  • There can be 3-4 days (or more) before seeing a Carrara image/video post.

I know the "D" place has left the Carrara community twisting in the wind, but isn't Carrara really alive as long as we keep using it? Somebody else said something that really clicked with me: I'm going to keep using Carrara (and Carrara-specific content) as long as I can keep it running. Yes, it has some annoying bugs but surprise so does every major piece of software on the planet. But for the most part it works and works well. I've seen nothing else out there that can provide so MUCH functionality, and at a very reasonable price. (Yes I also dabble at other products, but Carrara is the one I reach for if I want to seriously jam something out.)

I think we as the Carrara community need to re-energize ourselves. What I'm proposing is this: Someone in our community post a Carrara-tagged image or video every day for the next 2-3 months, and try to post at least one tech / beginner topic per week in the forum. Shoot I'll even commit myself to post on a given day of the week for this time - there 1/7th of the images already accounted for LOL! (I don't think I'm very qualified for forum tech "how-to's", but I'll try to do something there too.)

How about if we start Saturday, December 1 and end Thursday, February 8? I'll even kick us off on December 1 and take Saturdays from then on. I count 13 Saturdays in that period, that's do-able even for me.

What do you guys think? I know we have busy lives (especially during the holidays) but is anyone out there willing to commit to posting something during this period?

Yes, Carrara is hardly dead, I use it on a daily basis. My interest is using Carrara to make short animations, mostly for contests (48 Hour Film Houston - Regular and Horror each year, Renderosity Halloween and Christmas each year, etc.). I'm usually working toward the next contest, e.g. right now the Renderosity Holiday contest. So not much time for weekly projects. But here are a few Carrara animations that did well in a contest and/or get more than average views at YouTube:

I use Carrara as well and am hoping someone with coding expertise and the interest will emerge to make sure it isn't rendered obsolete by operating system updates or any other technology it depends on. Several people are still developing great plugins and there certainly seems to be an enthusiastic base. Here's a music video I made for Baba Brinkman, who's had a range of off Broadway shows that generally relate to science or critical thinking. This one, Senescence, has to do with the inevitable decline of our body and how that relates to evolutionary forces: https://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/?thread_id=2928990

The link just returns to this Forum page. I'd like to see your video.

Sorry. Here's the correct link for the Senescence video.

Sorry. Here's the correct link for the Senescence video.

Very cool, nice sync animation & music. Reminds me of a comedian talking about having a baby, wondering why they just didn't provide a zipper or something. 😳

I use it a lot more than any other 3D software I own, I just do not come to this forum very often, I mostly post over in the D forum about content often bemoaning lack of Carrara compatibility.

I've been working on a short animation, still impressed at what Carrara can do. E.g. the Non-Linear Animation feature makes character animation much easier than key framing. Especially with a lot of Carrara clips saved up over time, converted from various vendor mocaps.

NLA clips are brilliant, I downloaded some free 3Drenderpeople

from here

and found them impossible to tpose in iClone 3D exchange but in Carrara I just created animation groups and turned all their animations into NLA clips isolating heads by unticking and loaded the posed unanimated ones and did the same lo and behold I can swap them all out between each other which I could not do in iClone as it whined were not the same mesh.

A good tip, thanks. I mostly use the aniMate Carrara aniBlock Importer, plus some from PoserMocap and the old Eclipse Studio. All converted to NLA clips so they can be sequenced easily.

Long live Carrara, it is wonderful software and aid for the artist.

Carrara is not dead at all, not in my studio anyway. There just isn't so much to write about it, since it is thankfully NOT being updated and muffed up every month.
