Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 03 1:41 pm)
Yup, I learned the same lesson earlier. FWIW, ShareCG is a better environment for freestuff. I've never received any trolling or snideness there. Occasionally a commenter will politely catch errors and missing files in my offerings, which I appreciate!
My python page
My ShareCG freebies
I don't think he's posting Poser free stuff he made. He's posting links to free software he's found on the net.
FWIW, I don't think it's the links that are the problem. Some people just don't like a lot of non-Poser posts cluttering up the forum, whether they contain links or not.
The rules on this have changed over the years. There used to be an OT forum that got pretty wild and woolly. So much so they got rid of it. And posting OT became acceptable here.
Though I wonder if that will change, now that it's the "Poser - OFFICIAL Forum."
We do have an "ignore user" option here. If anyone's annoyed, they can just block you. Or you can block them, if they're harassing you. Unless it's a mod telling you you're posting too much, point out the ignore button (the little speaker icon), and suggest they use it. Maybe they don't know about it.

Maybe I am being too "sensitive", but here I am pointing out free stuff to people that they can download online, and all they can do is complain.
Not me! I appreciate it, Poser or nonPoser

Well, they didn't seem to have a problem with it over at the SM Poser Forum. I got into the habit there. But you're right, I probably shouldn't be posting links here anyway. Free stuff or not.
Just a comment ... over at SM there were only forums that directly related to the SM software, and there weren't any other subtopics. But here there are tons of different forums where your links might be more noticed by those who would be interested. Like there is a Texturing forum where you can post stuff about GIMP ... and there is also a Free Stuff forum here as well (though I'm not sure if that is for free stuff that is posted here, or if you can post links like you have been).
I see both sides of this. You're trying to be helpful, but on the other hand some of the stuff really isn't directly related to Poser and it's going to be buried amongst all the other Poser posts.
I don't see anything wrong with sharing links to free software, as long as it is truly free and those links have been fully vetted (there are websites dedicated to doing exactly that). Companies generally are not in the business of giving away free software unless there's something in it for them, and a lot of the supposed 'freeware' out there is infested with adware, which you agree to install when you install the app. Once installed it can be virtually impossible to remove without doing a full virus and malware scan of your system. That stuff is dangerous and puts your pc and personal information at risk. As an example, I did a quick google search for one of the apps listed above 'DrawPad' and it returned a half dozen sites explaining how to remove it and its malware from your system. If its truly free then it won't be infested with adware/malware and will operate on an open source concept like Blender or gimp, where people donate their time and resources to its development.

Not really buried Deecey. The topics have dropped off quite a bit. Especially since most people have upgraded and came here to get help. Still, you have a good point. I only wonder how many GIMP users are there? Plus I think a lot of people (like me) come here for information as most of us are good at other artistic besides Poser. Rendering is good but often it's even better with postwork.
@EC, I was asked that same question. "What does it have to do with Poser?" It's a negative comment designed to curtail discussion. To quote Contact, "We will not be suppressing any discussion today." I do my best not to let something or someone negative stop me from doing something positive. You should as well.

I didn't find any of that Shane, but it is made by NCH Software and as far as I can tell, the version they are giving away is free. But does seem to be mostly an introduction because you can buy a more robust version.
If you search for NCH software you'll find several links to forums and blogs talking about what it does to your system in terms of adware, and automatically setting itself as the default app for various file types, etc. Some of them even state that its not detected by virus scans and still shows up after thorough cleaning. I've had enough problems with software like that doing similar crap to my system in the past that I'm always cautious of anything that advertises itself as 'free' these days. There's always some kind of catch - even if its just ads to encourage me to upgrade to their premium version. (I'm currently having the same problem with CCleaner - which I had to install a while back in order to get rid of some other crap. Now CCleaner has become the very type of software I was using IT to get rid of, and others like McAfee have become the same). If I want to upgrade then I'll go to their website and upgrade myself, I don't need a constant reminder and doing so makes me not want to use that software at all. So download at your own risk. But I'm not saying any of this to discourage you from sharing quality software and other useful bits, I'm just saying be cautious of freeware because they aren't giving it away out of the goodness of their hearts - there's some sort of catch involved.

I second that, and they keep reminding me to upgrade - only to subscribe, Adobe style. No thanks!

CCleaner is constantly telling me to upgrade, the worst was a trial product that I prolly disposed of a while ago. But it left a nasty little trick. It turned any jpeg I downloaded from the net into a jfif file. Guess which forum doesn't allow jfif files? Not only that, I could tell it to "SAVE AS" a jpeg and it was telling me, No way in hell buddy. We own your graphics.
I ended hacking my registry to get rid of the reference. Now I can post pix again but really? It hacked my registry? Heaven knows what time bomb they left in there.
Malwarebytes also did it...briefly. I think the backlash scared them. My reply when they asked me why I didn't want to upgrade to premium at this time was "You've become just like the others. Trying to trick me into downloading software I didn't want, hijacking my browser and my Dad's browser. You know how that feels. Why in the hell are you doing it too?"
As I said, They switched back within a week. I now have Malwarebytes Premium. I suspect it's saved me from a fate worse than them.
Earl, sorry for the confusion ... Perhaps products that relate more to Poser can go here ... And those more general can go on the community forum. If not sure please feel free to site mail a staff member such as myself and we can verify. We just want to guard against referrals to a competitor's commercial site.

Boni, could you get rid of the Spam Post in the Comic Stuff thread? Thanks! ?

That's okay, Boni. I just won't put any more links on the forum. And I'll just keep things to myself.
That's a damn shame. I certainly wouldn't ever complain about the stuff you post. Some people can be really ungrateful buggers, unfortunately.

Over the last month I started posting things on this forum. They were mostly free. As far as I know you didn't have to sign up for anything. And I found these links while foraging online. Well, I've found some more stuff. And I've been criticised for "oversharing' to the point where someone said I was "spamming". Another person asked what any of it had to do with Poser. So fine, I learned my lesson. No more links to free stuff. I will however, let you know that there are several free editing software apps available for you to download. You don't have to sign up as far as I can tell and as I said they're free and they're available for Windows, Mac and in at least a couple of cases, Android and IOS. But you have to go look them up for yourself. I just wanted to let you know they're out there.
There's six of the apps,
Wavepad, Record music, add effects, split files, add a fade in or out. With WavePad, you have the editing tools you need.
Mixpad, Record music and vocal tracks, load audio files and use the beat designer to create the perfect multi-track mix.
Videopad, Edit, trim and combine video files, then polish with a soundtrack, video effects and transitions before sharing.
Photopad, Edit your photo by applying color filters and curves, adjusting the exposure and touching up imperfections.
Disketch, (Disk Labeling Editor) Finish your project with a CD, DVD or Blu-Ray label that includes a title and cover images.
Drawpad. Graphic design software for expressing your creative ideas, making a logo, designing a greeting card and more.
I do have a link though for anyone who wants to sitemail me for more info.
