After a very long partnership, DAZ had decided to venture on their own and improve figures that work with DS. When Genesis was released they provided first instructions on how to get it into Poser then a DSON Importer to facilitate the transition realizing that Poser users still had a major interest. However, as each iteration of DAZ figures were released, they dropped that support and discontinued any further development of the importer. Instructions and guidelines still exist for converting Genesis to Poser use but the process is not quite as simple as before and users don't want to bother going through it, they want something ready right out of the box. Bondware expressed interest in continuing DAZ cooperation but DAZ expressed disinterest. And any conversion codes that DAZ has is proprietory, not easily obtained or used. In a nutshell, this is the state of the affairs ATM and until someone can come up with an easy, affortable way of importing fully functional Genesis figures into Poser without requiring extensive recode you'll have to bear with situations the way it is.
Ultimately it doesn't bother me either way as I rarely use my poser program anymore, try as I might, I was never able to get dson to work, and pretty much have given up, I come to the poser/Renderosity forums due to having started out on poser, and have had fond memories of it, so it's mostly nostalgia that keeps me coming back.
You can still import genesis & genesis2 characters in to poser 11 and poser12 by using DSON importer and if you have DSON editor (both found at daz3d.com) you can set & conform the genesis(2) clothing and stuff before importing it over to poser. But it does not work for genesis3 or 8 . But you can do a conversion of genesis8 to genesis using riversoftarts conversions script found at daz3d.com . but you still need to use the dson importer to get genesis into poser its a lot of work. practically not worth the effort.
Daz Studio IMO is much easier to use. for animation . the UI is more user friendly. easier to move and edit things on the timeline . The animate2 timeline makes quick animations a snap. Iray and the iray render setting are straight forward. Its takes a lot of messing around to get Superfly to look at good as Iray . Though you can come very close. & Poser render is slow, lets face it its 3 to 5 times slower than Iray IMO
Poser 12 though has a number of features I would love to see in daz studio. 1 is being able to use mp4 Video footage as a background is huge. especially for mixing 3d characters in to real-ife video. daz studio requires everything be done like that in a video editor.
the second feature I really like in poserq12 is the bullet & soft-body physics which are not so easy to set up in poser & even harder to edit in the timeline . but at least poser has bullet physics that will work. daz studio do not even offer bullet physics. or Volumetric's so poser has that,
De-force has been a nice feature in daz studio. I use it a fair amount in animation. but it still does not match posers dynamic clothing room for dynamic clothing.and hair. yes it takes a heck of a lot of work to set up and to render but the results are worth it.
Poser has a straight forward IK/FK solution for the timeline editor allowing for individual key-frames to be edited one at a time for each of their keyframe values and how they interact with the Inverse kinetics with secondary props or ground. . The best daz has is a new IK-chain systems with a new timeline editor that still has some issues that need to be ironed out. . and its does not work for hard surfaces pinning. plus you have to manually add the ik-chains to the daz content your using in order to set up the ik-chains, where 90% of the poser content already has IK-chains included. that are ready to work with the poser timeline editor.
Daz Studio assets quality is much better than posers character mesh though the environments being offered by Rpublishing have been very impressive lately. so I am looking forward to seeing what elses come out. I love Alyson character. she sexy versatile and she can wear V4/S4 conforming clothing and hair pretty easy in poser 12. Lafeme not so much Lafemme needs more development IMO. I would like to see la-femme and la-homme offer more character morphs shape options to make them more versatile.
But gone are the day when poser & daz content cooperation was the norm. But at least you think Daz3d or renderosity could make a bridge to poser like they did for daz to blender and daz to unity daz to maya , daz to Ureal. etc. so we could use the genesis 8 characters in poser. at the best i would like to use some of Daz .DUF file format environments in poser. So who knows what the future holds.
This is a poser animation I just did with poser12 using Blackheart GND for Alyson2 and genesis male character. it took me 8 days to make this 1 minute film 3 days were used to render it in Superfly using a Panoramic dome background from cake and bob that came with one of their HDRi sets. at daz3d.com
Poser 12 Animation demo Girl on the beach from Ivy's art and animations on Vimeo.
HUH!! I do not know what to say to that. Because if that is true then I wonder why it just worked for me when just i used genesis 2 male and here is the screen shots using poser12 I do have poser pro11 installed do you think it has anything to do with the importer? because as you can see it clearly is it loaded dson for me. with no errors no issues and I did not even use dimission3d DSON Editor I just did this straight up opening genesis2 from my library.
For me, any DSON imported figure saved back into the Library in Poser 11 will load in Poser 12, no problems. However, many users dependent on DSON to load any Genesis have not been able to do so, check the other threads in the forums. Now, did you load your Genesis directly from the Poser Library or from the browser using drag and drop?
I loaded it by going to file, click open file. browes to file location I want to open . then open genesis or genesis2 DUF and let load. and yes I have saved a lot of genesis files with poser 11 in the past but this was a straight up library file . those screen shots came from poser12 . DSON will not work for genesis3 or 8 though at all. I do have poser11.3 installed but I have not used it since i got poser12.
Only time I have a issue with dson is when I try to load genesis3 or gensis8 or a DUF enviroment file then I get this Dson line`1 error
when I am looking at my poser file structure under my c:/ programs files/poser software/Poser 12 . I have some DSON poser pro 2012 install files that are located in my poser12 folder .it appears to be the same files I have in my C:Program FilesSmith Micro poser 11 & they are poser pro2012 DOSN install files
when you installed poser 12 did you reinstall the dson importer and point the directory to poser software folder instead of it being directed to Smithmicro I believe the install use to point to my poser 11 folder in the c:/drive and so I changed the directory to dosn importer to my poser 12 location
I reinstalled my dosn importer directly into c:/ poser software because when i first installed poser12 I had a bunch of dson importer problems and when i reinstalled dosn import and pointed it to install into my poser12 folder it was working So you might try reinstalling dosn importer. or check your program foldr to see if it installed
screencap pointing doson installer to poser12 folder location
poser 12 with dson folder
second screen shot poser 11 folder with dson
Tried reinstalling from an executable and still the same problem. I'm not going to agonize over it, I still have Poser 11.3 installed and the importer works fine there without any complaint. Creating pz3 format in P11 and opening them up in P12 is not an issue for me, I seldom use Genesis anyway. Thanks for the help and input.
I'm sorry it not working for you . like i said i had a bunch of dson importer issues when i first installed poser12 and that is why i reinstalled dosn importer and it worked ever since. I like to make animations & I do use genesis and genesis 2 a lot for animation so I was concerned when i was having issues & i lost a lot of my old animation scene files i had for poser10 that won't work for poser 12 luckily i had exported them out as bvh files so I can redo them. but still I hate it when i loose things during software upgrades.
On the question of why make a bridge to Blender,C4D , Maya and not poser. the answer is obvious to anyone paying attention.
Daz knows they cannot compete with true professional 3DCC apps like Blender or Maya so they make plugins to export Daz content to those apps in hopes of getting those pro users to buy from the Daz store as content sales is thier primary business model.
Daz does not consider poser a competing software and frankly ..it is not at this point.
Any poser user who truly wants to use genesis has free access to the base program & figures and can link to his current poser runtime and salvage most of his legacy poser content for use in studio unitl he migrates to new Daz content which he inevitably will.
Any poser users who (for whatever reasons) refuses to leave the poser comfort bubble is not considered a desirable target demographic by Daz or its PA's. hence no more DSON updates,no new bridges etc.
Bondware has WISELY chosen not to commit resources to reprogramming poser to chase the golden unicorn(genesis).
Reallusion did it for many years and what did it get them?? Gensis 8.1 has already broken our FBX import& conversion to CC3 Avatar tool.
Reallusion already has announced plans for a major new facial animation and Dyamnic hair system to Iclone and Character creator 4.
Epic has the new Meta humans for UE & Maya which has shown everyone that Daz does not have any sort of rarified ability to make realistic prefabbed humans.
it is not just about the pretty white girls in Daz studio anymore (never was in reality)? it is about entire competing figure&content ecosystems.
Choose wisely.?
Thanks for the insightful input Wolf? wouldn't it be nice if there was a Universal 3d file format, like a JPEG is to a image that all software app and platforms would use. Boy that sure make life easier for us
I am beginning to believe as Ai is used more in game engines development and scripting is going to become more of a industry standard like in Unity or Unreal, cry-engine etc. . that is where the your going to see some major leaps in animation creation and daz and poser will be a thing of the past. Ai appear to be moving everything forward.
I started with poser many moons ago. & I didn't buy my last upgrade for poser. I started to use daz studio for the content. in 2010.
But lately I have since been concentrating on learning Blender and Unreal platforms to expand my animations skills
If i did not have to reinvest all over again for new tools and content I may have moved to another platform long ago. But being a hobby user that is so heavily invested in daz and poser content. I am pretty much stuck with what I have until I can afford to make a new investment into a new platform. so your right there is no incentive for daz or renderosity to make a bridge to each others platform when they have a captive market for each software. My guess is properly over time they will lose people to platforms that do use a more Universal 3d file format sharing system like a JPEG is Universal to a image format. but i am not holding my breath its going to happen anytime soon.
Greetings good Lady, BTW "The Jade dragon" was excellent and very funny the way she kicked some of her Assailants clear out of the frame!!?
I agree that the future of the 3D character platform is in animation.
And remember those realtime engines like UE4,Unity and EEVEE are just as capable of cranking up the samples and rendering high quality still portriats so any notion that stil artist will never migrate to them is a false one
And kudos to you for at least looking into migrating to free DS alternatives like Blender and UE4.
As you probably know ,there already exists a great bridge plugin for Daz studio to Blender (Diffeomorphic) NOT the official Daz "bridge" and there is a huge thread in the Daz Blender forum supporting it and helping newbies.
"Universal scene Description (USD) promises to be the "great universal scene exchange" format but few apps support it for both import &export at this point so.... time will tell
Thank you Wolf for the nice comment on the Jade Dragon it was my first try at Ai scripted character voices. using MS Azure. i also agree with you on the direction blender has been going . its been a huge help that blender now has UI panes so i can dock the more useful tools for easier access. I am still not there yet on the render quality of blender that I have seen other artist have achieved, and the main reason for me working with UE is for volumetric and particle FX that are built in. and the real-time POV as you build has a big appeal to me, its getting the project from 1 app to the other i have the most difficulties with. I love using zbrush for making my own characters but getting them to daz or even blender with the rigging intact has proved problematic for me as well. I watched so many videos on the subject my eyes bleed. but i still have a hard time grasping the file transfers & exchanges between the different apps,. that is why i think a universal file format would be very useful for working in multiple 3d apps. so far i have been lucky enough to win all these apps like poser, blacksmith, zbrush etc in contest. so I must be doing something right :)
