Here's an informal, totally meaningless poll- OSX or 9.X, if you had to pick, which would it be? Steve Cooper Curious Labs

gryffnn ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 7:49 PM

Yoohoo, me again. All four of our Macs still on 8.6, due to move to 9 real soon now. Probably next year we'll move to OSX loaded on a new machine, so we can keep all our "classic" software happily humming away on the old ones. No real killer app yet to make us in a hurry - unless you've got one up your sleeve???

LeeMoon ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 8:12 PM

Hi Steve! I've just upgraded to OS X (from 9.1) when 10.1 was released. Poser runs significantly slower for me in Classic mode. My vote would be for OS X. Lee

Steve, I've gotta say, OSX. It rocks. While it's a bit slow on my current iMac 233, I like the stability. Besides I'm promising myself a Powerbook G4 for (OS)X-mas. Plus it just looks darn cool! ;) (btw, how about bundling some PoserTRAX in your next release? ;) Sorry, had to take the opp, you're a tough guy to reach these days...) Keep Rockin'! -silver

HI i am running OSX .1 about eighty percent of the time the protected memory is GREAT for long renders in cinema4dxl7.1 and bryce5 because i can now safely render in the background and continue working on something else OSX RULES!!

OS X 10.1 all the time now.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 10:13 PM

Still working in OS9 but might be getting a puter that would be OSX .. But that will be a bit.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 10:34 PM

Steve, I've got 8.6 and 9 on my 2 Macs. Waiting for PhotoShop to support OSX to upgrade, but that should be soon. Many G4s have dual processors, so if you included a real renderer (HINT!!!), I'd strongly suggest going to OSX and making use of multitasking if possible. Almost all graphics apps are migrating, and most of us use a half-dozen programs. If it is going to be a couple of years between upgrades (which my wallet wouldn't mind), you should reach for the best tech level you can build and support. If you have to notch back a little to be more bug-free and stable, that is ok, but if you don't reach, you will be perceived as old and non-competitive. Carolly

DgerzeeBoy ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 10:48 PM

Well.. I'm running 8.6 on one HD, and 9.1 on another. Both are smooth as silk. Haven't upgraded to X, but I hear 10.1 is significantly better. My vote is for 9x until X grows up.

otaku ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 11:12 PM

9.1 on all 4 macs, OS 10.0 on ibook accasionally still bother by classic mood switching but I do love the os 10 finder and interface especially the doc and preview icons that show actual files. Just ordered os 10.1 to see improvements, but until poser and photoshop come out with os 10 upgrades or patches I'll probablly wait to switch over.

willf ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 11:23 PM

Pose addicts will use whatever OS you write for. However, new MACs are shipping with OSX and "new to the Mac" users will be so primarily for the OS. Do you want to reach new users? However, if it means an inferior port then I'd wait for the switch.

jschoen ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2001 at 11:25 PM

I'm still on 9.1 on both G4s (G4 and G4 Cube). I have OSX and OSX.1 should be coming soon. I don't know why but I'm a bit worried to upgrade. My G4's are only 400 and 450 MHz (though they do run faster than my 866 MHz PC) and I'm scared that OSX will slow things down. And I'm also wary of the "Classic" emulation. Bryce 5 is OSX, so that's good, but I don't know how Poser Pro will handle the emulation. But as I said I do own it and one of these days I'll put it on. Come on people convince me .....;-) James

Mosca ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 12:28 AM

At the moment, for me, OS X is more trouble than it's worth. Half my peripherals are still unsupported--finding that out caused a couple of major crashes. Plus, I find the interface annoying--way too busy for my taste, visually speaking. I want my interface to sit quietly in the background, thank you very much. Oh, I'm using OS 9-whatever on all three of my macs.

rtamesis ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 1:03 AM

I've shifted almost completely to OS X and basically am in the process of replacing OS 9 apps with OS X versions. It just irritates me to have to still use certain apps like Poser within Classic rather than natively within OS X. Luckily for me, Maxon's Cinema 4D XL7 is an OS X native application.

rtamesis ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 1:06 AM

Basically, I refuse to buy a new application or an upgrade to an existing one (like Photoshop 6.0) if it cannot run natively in OS X.

Grammer ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 2:04 AM

Definitely OS X - Poser should also take advantage of the Altivec engine which coud give it some speed. I ported almost all of our applications without any major problems in a very short time.

DTHUREGRIF ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 2:42 AM

I'm still running OS 9.x and will probably not upgrade until I can afford a completely new system. I already have a rpinter that's a boat anchor now because there's no OS9 driver for it. I am afraid of upgrading and not being able to use my other printer, my scanner, etc. etc.

scrandall ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 3:22 AM

Both of my work Macs are entirely OS X now. Since the release of 10.1 performance has been more than good enough (one is an old 292MHz G3 Powerbook, the other is an early 400

Robert Belton ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 3:35 AM

Using 9.2, mainly because the software I use seems to be happier in 9. X doesn't do it for me yet but I haven't any native apps to run in it for what I want to do. X.1 is better than X and given the right apps I'd move to X eventually but at the moment I feel more at home in 9.

jnmoore ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 7:05 AM

OSX without a doubt! I don't have it yet, and probably won't get it until Photoshop, and/or Poser, upgrades (at which time I'll also replace my G3 300 Mhz with whatever is the latest and greatest). I'm running 9.0.4 right now on it with 768MB of memory. What will be the status of PPP? Will it integrate with the new Poser, or will I have to upgrade it also (or will the new Poser simply eclipse it)? Jim Moore

Jim Burton ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 7:19 AM

My school will upgrade the Macs to OS 10 when I tell it to, and I can't see doing that until there are mainstream applications that run faster in it, I'm sort of suprized that Photoshop 6 didn't come that way. If you do make a OS 10 version you are going to have to have a "classic" version in the install too, I hope you realize- just like installs that ask if you want the Powermac or 68000 version, otherwise you going to kill yourself in the Mac market. That would be the best solution for now, but currently I would guess (and it is only a guess, from asking around) less than half of the Mac owners have upgraded or will in the near future, do you want to cut yourself off from half your market?

Dr Zik ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 8:31 AM

Hi Folks! I'm still running OS 8.6 on my G3 MiniTower and 1st Gen PowerBook g3 (Wall Street?). I will migate to OS X 10.1 or whatever when I pirchase a new Titanium PowerBook nest year. I hope that that at least for the next year or two, you'll make your planned upgrades to Poser in Classic as well as OS X versions. And BTW--thanx for asking. I've said numerous times that one of the nice things about Renderosity is that PC and Mac folks manage to live peacefully here. I appreciate your gesture of reaching out to us and confirming the significant presence of Mac users at this forum. Peter (Dr Zik)

PilotHigh ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 9:59 AM

I'm still running 9.2 on dual G4, G3 and iMac. Like some I'm still afraid to update to X, even though I do have it. Not sure when or if I'll intall it though.

mikes ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 10:46 AM

Totally meaningless poll???? Sure..... I'm sticking with 9 until X is a mature system. I can't believe how many years Apple spent on X and what eventually appeared.

ImagineThat ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 2:45 PM

OSX is the way to go! Sure not everything is ported to X yet but most of the major apps will in due time. Some of Adobe already is and on my G4 450Mhz, photoshop runs very good in classic under X. Bryce already is in X and it looks like alot of the big 3d programs are heading that way. Even the folks who make Maya decided it was time to go Apple. What people have to remember is this is a new operating system, not an upgrade. Be patient with it and try to work with it. I think some people look at it and all they see is the aqua interface and think thats all Apple did with the operating system. Look deeper, look at all of the things mac users griped about in the past that the pc people had and we now do. Protective memory, multi-tasking, opengl, better network support and so on. Besides the major difference is its based off of UNIX. A very stable and open source code. Ok its not completely bug free. Anyone know of many operating systems that are? Why not develope for OSX now and not only stay with the game but in some cases be ahead of it. There are always going to be die hards that refuse to embrace anything new. There is comfort in what you are used to using even if the promise of something better is out there. I still remember people thinking OS 8 was radical and too troublesome. How funny that seems now. I dont think its a meaningless poll at all. If I were a software company I would want peoples opinion whether they agree with mine or not. Why not be open minded? Imagine That (RE)

JimX ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 9:42 PM

I agree with rtamesis. I'm still running OS 9.1, but the next computer is going to be OS X. I am no longer acquiring any new or upgraded software that is not ready for OS X. (P. S. -- that dual/multiple processor support would be a real plus) - JimX

nyar1ath0tep ( ) posted Thu, 25 October 2001 at 11:19 PM

My vote is to plan a release of Poser 5.0 for Mac OS 9.x, then work on the Poser 5.1 patch for OS X.X concurrently with the Apple software engineers, who won't finish aping out most of the user-unfriendly and user-hostile OS X.1 "features" until July or August 2002. "Isn't OS X.1 already user-friendly?", some people will ask, much in the manner of the courtiers in "The Emperor's New Clothes" fable. Just check newsgroups like comp.sys.mac.system if you have any such illusions. Why add OS X problems to the burden for newbies of learning 3D software?

wolf359 ( ) posted Fri, 26 October 2001 at 2:12 PM

"user friendly"
is such a subjective term in my opinion
i am more interested in power and stability
"Maya" from alias wavefront is not "user friendly"
but its power and stability make it the industry standard
for film animation and effects
the same with softimage3d
and newtek's Lightwave to a lesser extent

the pre-emptive multi tasking, protected memory
and a finder that does not require me to clutter up my screen
with open windows, makes OSX a great leap forward for the mac OS in my opinion.

the old Mac OS was a set of small system resources that
forced software writers to create self contained little mini-operating systems
and build the desired application into them
and then have these competing systems fight to the death/crash
over system resources.

so how about you stick with you older OS systems
and stop asking us forward looking Mac users to" hold off"
until you say its ready :-)

I found OS X to be much more user friendly and more crashproof than OS 9, so speak for yourself.

A good topic for this forum might be how we can support the continuing evolution and development of Poser. I'm less interested in defending Mac (or Unix or Windows) OS than I am in seeing how we can help Cooper with compassionate advice. So I don't think this is the right forum for OS X apologists and salesmen; however, a forum called comp.sys.mac.systems (among others) is already engaged in that debate.

wolf359 ( ) posted Fri, 26 October 2001 at 2:57 PM

<"A good topic for this forum might be how we can support the
continuing evolution and development of Poser">

I think the previous posts make it clear that
mac users want curious to continue to develope poser for
the MAC OS.

<"I don't think this is the right forum for OS X apologists
and salesmen">

Apple Computer already has a highly paid promotional staff
so i dont see any end user here trying sell or apologize for anything

<"a forum called comp.sys.mac.systems
(among others) is already engaged in that debate.">

then please point your browser to one of those apple bashing forums of yours and stop imploring us over here at renderosity to remain stuck in the past.

This has been a great thread for us, we need to hear your comments about the operating systems you're using and plan on using, and even the heated comments do serve a purpose. I need as good a gauge as I can get about how our Mac users (and there are a lot of you out there) view the current state of affairs regarding the platform and its operating system. This had been a great read. Steve Cooper
