Subject: Antonia - Opinions?

jroulin ( ) posted Sat, 24 December 2022 at 3:29 AM

Thanks odf, I have downloaded it. If you are OK with it I will generate an easy sim for it and post it in the free section. The script will be located in the same folder as the skirt.

I will do it after the holidays. Wish you all the best for Christmas and year end!

Nice one, jroulin! 👍

I feel I'm about ready to publish the blouse, but it occurred to me that I might not be allowed to redistribute MD buttons under a CC license. So, just to be on the save side, I think I'll make my own buttons in Blender instead. Anyway, I'm quite happy with how it simulates, and hopefully I'll be a bit faster getting my dynamic clothes out into the open after these first "test balloons".

If you make the buttons in Blender try to reduce the poly count so that it will simulate faster in Poser. The MD buttons are really high in poly and this is reducing the sim speed a lot. If you send me the zip file before posting it in the free area, I can run the sim script generator for you so that you can include the sim files in your zip. Generating those files take me less than one min but posting a free item myself much more.

Agreed, those buttons don't need that many polygons, considering their size. But the worst offenders seem to be the little threads of yarn attached to them. 😁

Okay, I'll do that. Can the generated script be distributed under the CC-BY license like all my freebies, or does it need a separate one?

A snapshot from testing the blouse with the new homemade buttons. I think I forgot to fix the normals in Blender, which is why they are looking pretty funky right now. Another small issue is that exporting from MD in the zero pose puts some strain on the garment, so the buttons tend to intersect the fabric. I may or may not have to fix their positions in Blender after exporting, but if so, that's not really a biggie, especially considering that the material zones come out weird and need manual fixing, anyway. Also, I'm assuming button-placement will only be an issue for the fully buttoned version.

Oh, before I forget: currently the blouse doesn't have a yoke. Does it need one? Do we have any seasoned seamstresses (of any gender) here that can weigh in on the issue?

It looks like the point of the breast dart sits too high. It usually ends at the point of the breast.

There's plenty of reference patterns available on line. If you want to flex your muscle in Italian here's a good one:

https://issuu.com/tallerbioarq/docs/la_tecnica_dei_modelli_uomo_-_donna.

It gives a lot of theory first. Patterns for 'corpini e camicie' start at page 139.

There's also a part 2 with patterns for Antonius.

Yeah, but that's just because of the pose. Her shoulders are pulled way back, making the fabric stretch across her chest and ride up on it. Increasing her breast size from the default probably didn't help either. The dart is just where it belongs in the A-pose.

Pretty sure that's what will happen in real life, as well. Most ladies don't glue the darts to their nipples, or so I hear. Of course, I'm no expert, so I'm just guessing. 😁

On the other hand, making the fit a bit looser and adding a yoke to compensate might help a bit with the riding up.

That's saying "page not found".

Looking at patterns is definitely helpful, but I find it can be a bit of a hen and egg problem. Not all patterns are easy to read, sometimes I need to understand the construction principles first before I can understand what the pattern does.

Oh, and it turns out MD splits the buttons along UV seams when exporting, so then Poser treats each button as many individual rigid decorations, causing chaos. That's why they looked so funky, nothing wrong with the normals. One more thing to fix in Blender.

Ok. Looks like there's a combination of things there. I had not noted the shoulders were pulled back.

Real life breasts would be flattened / pushed aside under the pressure which would reduce the effect.

It looks to me like the dart starts around the bottom of the underarm. Typically, darts start at roughly "bra-strap" level.

True, for a blouse/shirt a more horizontal dart at the bust seems more common. I‘ll give that a try.

Quite true! For a "real“ render, morphing the breasts accordingly would have been a good idea.

So, I changed the direction of the dart, and that looks so much better with the pin stripes, and probably other fabric patterns, as well. This is the kind of thing that makes posting random in-progress snapshots and having folks “nitpick” them worthwhile. So, thanks for that!

Some progress on the buttoned version of the blouse:

I'll probably go with the materials on the left, which I really like for this garment. But I'm also showing some texture variations to highlight the new dart direction (see middle image) and the slight self-intersection at the button placket (see image on the right), which is probably unavoidable in Poser.

Just made the first version of a sort of Prefitter-CR2 using LaFemme as donor and Antonia as target. This aims to do a 95% refit of LaFemme stuff to Antonia.

Succesful now for jeans, T-Shirt and hair. She runs barefoot because shoe conversion is notoriously difficult.

It is not a Prefitter-CR2 injection but an independent item. If there is interest I can release it as a freebie. Would there be any interest?

DCArt ( ) posted Mon, 16 January 2023 at 11:56 AM · edited Mon, 16 January 2023 at 12:01 PM

The darts look better, but still not quite right. From a sewing perspective:

The "peak" of the dart (the end)  is generally around the nipple, or at the fullest part of the breast. That's the purpose of the dart, to make the flat fabric fall properly around that non-flat shape. Otherwise you will get bunching and pulls in places you don't want. 8-)

Then the split part is generally slightly lower than that. You show that part right, it's just that your dart "peak" needs to be closer to the nipple area.

Here's an example. Hard to tell where the nipple actually is, but hopefully you get the point (no pun intended LOL)

Anyway, good case to try arm gloves and boots. (Antonia's ankles and feet are made invisible)

Works largely OK.

Will polish a little and release when ready.

Lots of little changes on the blouse to make it behave better as Poser dynamic cloth. Here's what the latest version looks like. I think I'm getting very close now, but I've said that before. :-)

FAEQvgXA9Hkbhw85cUTTYGK3gkzi42uXsMbpqKZZ.png

One thing that annoys me is that I cannot make all 127 combinations of open and closed buttons available in Poser. The way I keep a button closed is by sewing a corresponding section of the front and back placket together in MD, which makes them share an edge in the exported mesh and thus keeps them together in Poser. So, with this method 127 button combinations would require 127 separate meshes, which is way too many.

If anyone knows of a trick to keep two pieces of fabric together in a Poser simulation that are not topologically connected in the mesh, let me know. Without the sewing, a closed button goes right through the fabric.

Otherwise, I'll just make three or four fixed versions, which is also fine.

DCArt ( ) posted Wed, 18 January 2023 at 8:41 AM

Yes the new blouse fitting is TONS better. I anticipated that it would look much better when posed and animated. Again, good job!

I can't imagine even doing 127 different button morphs, nevermind 127 different morph objects.

As for keeping fabrics together during simulation, you'd have to experiment with the Soft Decorated Group and Rigid Decorated Group options in the cloth room. I'd start with assigning both front and back plackets to the soft decorated, and the buttons to rigid decorated. See if that helps.

I did some investigations into this a few years ago. If memory serves me well making topology changes via Python turned out to be the only potentially feasible route. (I did not explore it) If there were only a single connection, say a clip holding a robe you could play a little with vertices assigned to '_rigid decorated_', but that hardly is highly experimental and I would not recommend it for any content other than strictly own use.  (Sorry Denise I saw your post only later)

Toplogy changes in the cloth object of course require setting up a new simulation.

Thanks! I would have been surprised if a user-friendly solution existed in Poser. It's still kind of interesting just for the heck of it, but I don't think I'll make any attempts at getting this kind of thing to work for a free-stuff item.

There'll probably be four versions: fully buttoned, unbuttoned, buttoned only in the middle, buttoned only in the top and bottom. It depends a bit on which versions I think fall nicely, so with the new fitting I'll have to do a few more experiments.
