Subject: Looing for an early 20th Century wardrobe item

DocPhoton ( ) posted Mon, 06 January 2025 at 9:16 PM · edited Mon, 20 January 2025 at 6:00 AM

I'm looking for another period wardrobe outfit; an early 20th century Police Uniform. I wouldn't thing that difficult to find, but not having any luck. I could probably cobble something out of the items I have, but before I do that, I thought it wise to ask here first. G8 preferred but could do a conversion from G3 as well.

Any suggestions?

Earlier today I had listed several outfits that you could probably kitbash together to get the look you want. The basic police uniform has not changed much, but the special units like swat and some other uniforms look more and more like military attire. I have a Michael 6 outfit https://www.daz3d.com/inspector-uniform-for-genesis-8-males.

I used this outfit https://www.daz3d.com/uniforms-for-michael-6 to create this image - https://www.renderosity.com/gallery/items/3190241/policeman-on-duty. The character is just basic G8 male.  There is variation in the hats, and shoes, but the accessories are basically the same. If there is a particular outfit you have questions about if I have it, I will be happy to answer your questions. I have a lot, but do not want to post the list here because it is a bit long.

Correction: Earlier today I had listed several outfits that you could probably kitbash together to get the look you want. However it took to long for me to add the comment and all the information was lost. The basic police uniform has not changed much, but the special units like swat and some other uniforms look more and more like military attire. I think this outfit has more of the older police uniform https://www.daz3d.com/inspector-uniform-for-genesis-8-males.

The pictured police uniform looks like one from the 1930's. It can't be compared with contemporary styles and may be harder to find without kitbashing from other models.

Your correct in that the periods look different for the uniforms of the 20' & 30's. They actually look more like the Nazi SS uniforms listed for Michael4.

Would that work with conversion on a G8 character? I don't have any M4 items to test with.

I have the Inspectors Uniform but thought that too plain, but had pretty good results using the https://www.daz3d.com/h-c-police-uniform-for-genesis-3-male-s uniform converted to G8, and with Big George as well after pruning hidden geometry. The badge & metal items are textures though rather than geometry. Went looking for a Badges collection and nada, only a tutorial on making them.

I do not own any Tannenbaum products and can not answer as to whether or not they will work on G8, but if you read the comments about the outfit you mentioned, someone was able to get it to work on GN3 characters and that makes it think it is possible to get it to work on G8. The one thing that I do when using M4/V4 characters on G8 characters is put the G8 character in a T-pose prior to adding the clothing and with various scripts I own I am able to get the clothing to fit. The T-pose mainly helps with getting pants to properly fit the legs. This product is also good for fitting clothing - https://www.daz3d.com/sy-victoria-4-and-michael-4-clones-for-genesis-8.   If you do not have the SY clones and templates, I recommend that you get them because they are truly helpful with getting older model clothing to fit the newer models. I have some older model military outfits that I will render and upload to my gallery with the links to them posted in this thread.

Ah! A converter I've never heard about. On the list to get.

Haven't had much luck exporting the T-Poses with FBX in order to retain the morphs. Perhaps there's there's a way using the cryptic Bake to Transforms function.

Once you export to FBX you lose the Daz Studio effect. Only the mesh goes. So if the clothing has shaders or special settings in the surface tab, you will probably lose it once you export to FBX.  I am curious what is the advantage of using Daz Studio products in light wave?

Can you set up a scene and render it in Daz Studio and then set up the scene and render it in lightwave and post the finished image somewhere.

Here's an example using StoneMason's "Streets of Morocco". I chose Camera#13 and loaded in his Iray presets & turned Use Local Dimensions OFF. In Lightwave, you can import camera data which is fine for position & rotation, but the lens info won't match, so you have to eyeball it. For lighting, I generally use a favorite HDR from HDRHaven. I eyeballed the rotation to match his shadows, but made a second one more to my liking.

As far as texturing, here's the PBR Node flow in Lightwave. Pretty simple & straight forward actually.

With FBX, you only get the basic surfaces in the file anyway, but that's enough for me to trace back to the correct Daz Runtime/Texures folder & just copy them. So yes, I'm aware, and while a few DAZish things still elude me, I resurface everything into PBR anyway, so that gives me control and allows my to use the older maps or make new ones.

It's all there in DS, but have you seen the Node editng tool? I can't find the Jay Verluis vid showing it now but yikes! Followed his directions, found and opened it, and it wouldn't fit on both my 27" monitors. Zoom out, useless to try and work with but a great abstract image.

With the tools I have in LW though, resurfacing an entire item, character, scene, becomes pretty quick & logical. I've a number of KitBash products, but the Daz and Rendo enviro products out shine them in many ways. Mostly copy & pasting, then change out the maps. Biggest problem is mostly no standards with naming convention of maps and surfaces.  And spelling.

And there are several thing in DAZ that are much better than with LW frankly, but I've generally a lot more control in pretty much all other aspects with Lightwave. Lighting most definitely, but most all of the UI.

For example, I've built a library of Poses that I've exported out of DS into LW, but LW doesn't have a simple, one-click means of mirroring a pose as does DS. So, I export a Mirrored pose too.  Only takes seconds fortunately as it's just the rig & no geometry so is <400k.

It just seems like a great deal of work. Going back and forth between programs. Node editing tool that comes to mind that I am familiar with is https://forum.daz3d.com/node-positioner-and-grabber and it is quite handy as well as https://forum.daz3d.com/mesh-grabber-bundle-win. This is a great bundle.  These also work great with a pen display or tablet table.  There is also https://forum.daz3d.com/advanced-collective-transform-tools (video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehZQgX29frE, https://forum.daz3d.com/face-to-face-and-virtual-origins (video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f44Cbz5DaFg&t=6s. These are the ones that come to mind.

Thanks for the links. It's a good reference.

It's not a back and forth thing at all; pretty much one-way really. Daz & Rendo have the content, Lightwave doesn't. LW is just easier for me to use is all, but not in all aspects.

The Node editing I was referring to above is for surfacing. Most transformation, parenting, & targeting type tools & such LW has natively. I've my workflow down that what used to take a few days I can often whang out now in a few hours, depending the wardrobe usually. I only need go back to the Daz scene if I change my mind or want to add something.

GGreen ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2025 at 5:08 PM

Node editing in surfaces, not familiar with this. Surfaces in my mind are material zones, such as I create a texture for an outfit or prop and I plug the texture into the correct materials zones to get the effect that I want.

Just a different way of extracating the upper dermal layer of a feline.  ;)
