Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
wyrwulf... nothing is written to the registry. It installs a set of textures to your poser textures library and a .pz3 into a directory within your Poser4 directory called 'DNA_Scenes' where the pz3 is stored. For your convenience it puts an icon on your desktop called RDNA_oriental_Room. You just double click on this icon and it will load poser complete with the Room all set up with lights and camera angle ready to plop your figures into. Of course you don't have to keep the scene as it is loaded. You can save all the individual parts to your props library to use in other scenes. We us a simillar installer as most Poser products. So don't be worried.... enjoy!
Beautiful! Thanks you so much!

#1. I don't want a directory called "DNA_Scenes" in my poser directory. I want it in my "PZ3 Files" directory. #2. I don't want an icon on my desktop. Period. I don't care what it's called. #3. I don't want a "Runtime DNA" entry in my programs menu. I wish to GOD that people would STOP making these stupid, annoying, pain in the neck EXE installers. I'm so sick and tired of going in behind them and clearing out someone else's idea of how MY poser directory structure should be set up. Thank you for your time, Kate (who will not be downloading this freebie) P.S. And would it be too much to ask that people (vendors in particular) STOP naming their files "+ thisorthat"? It really annoys me to have to rename everything in order to keep my directory structure the way I want it instead of the way YOU want it. I find it extremely arrogant and intrusive.
hehe...Ken, that's the first thing I thought of...your Room with a view...I am sure it wasn't intentional though... I have to agree with kate, although it sounds like she's having a bad day...I would rather not have all the extra's provided in some of these self extractors...oh well. Kate...I know you usually have a better sense of humour than that post...I hope you are ok! LOL!!!! :)
Thanks all for the comments on how you like things set up. Its good to get all kinds of feedback on how users feel about these things. Let me reiterate though, these installers and people like us who set up their products in installers, are not creating them to be rude, arrogant or intrusive to a user in any way, shape or form. But rather to make things easier. Adjusting an installer is not a difficult thing to do. We are simply trying to put a very professional foot forward and have worked very hard to do so. As far as the title goes, I was inspired late last night while uploading the product to name it, and Kens room was the farthest thing from my mind, but alas, it is BEAUTIFUL! I will tell you though that I got the idea from a movie title, and was suprised that I even thought of it, after working 16 hours yesterday, and uploading at midnight. Ah well, great minds think alike LOL. Bia, the lights are part of the .pz3, and again thanks for your ideas and comments. Syyd
For the record, the arrogant and intrusive comment was not directed at you, Colm and Syyd, but at the tendency in general that I've seen lately where people are pushing to get their items to be the first thing that comes up in the library listing when you open the Poser library. (That's why I stuck it in the P.S.) The reason I prefer a zip file is that it allows me to place the items where I want them to go (I know how to turn off the "use directory names" checkbox g) from the beginning, thus saving me the time and effort of going in and moving things, deleting things, etc. This is something that has been bothering me for quite some time actually, and you just happened to get caught in the explosion that has been building up. For that, I apologize, it was unfair of me. However, my intense dislike of exe installers and my preference for zips stands. :) Kate (who thinks it's a lovely room, btw)
Just another question to the installer. Does the items from your store comes with this installer too? I agree with Kate, I don,t like this installer things and I,m sure your installer don,t work with localized Poserversions like german or french or does it? And I don,t like it if it installs other things as I want. There are some very nice items in your store but I would like to have the possibility to get this item in a zip without this installer.
and i like this room too and wish you would make it avaiable without, ahem you know :-)
Thanks
Robert
Thank you for the gift, it is very nice. Good luck with DNA.. and since you're just beginning.. and seem to want some feedback.. I usually like the self-installers. Yours however, installed in my curious labs directory.. and many of us have our systems set up to store everything in the old metacreations directory. (curious labs endorses this) In this case, I definitely would have preferred a zip, set up so that I could extract it into my Runtime folder, as many people use. It's trying to find the textures.. and when I tried to cancel.. it keeps locking up my computer.. and occasionally crashing it. The desktop icon is not so bad, because that's easy enough to delete. Why did it also give me an icon for Right Hemisphere though? People have a hard enough time keeping things neat and organized. I think you'll find that no one wants either of those icons. When we want to use Poser, we open Poser, not click on an icon for a specific item. Can you imagine an icon for everything we have in our Libraries? That brings me to the Program Menu. I DEFINITELY DO NOT want more things in there cluttering that up. I understand that you want to make your license and readme available.. but that is a poor solution. I tried to uninstall your download and there is nothing visible in "Add/Remove Programs" I'm off to try and clean it up again. Good luck with DNA
I have no problem with the .exe installer. During the installation process, it asks for verification of the directory it installs to. Click the 'Browse' button and select an alternate directory. I install the files in a temp directory that I've set-up for just this purpose and then, using Windows Explorer, I just drag the drop the files and directories from that to where I want to keep them within my Poser directory set-up. As far as the desk top icons, just dump them into the recycle bin and if you don't want the Program Menu entry, right-click on it and then select Delete. All this takes less time than it took me to type this...
Hi welcomesite, Thanks for the feedback. It is very helpfull. What we will do is put a message on the download page of the freebees informing people that this is what the installer does. We are also compiling a site FAQ regarding installation matters. There is 'browse' function to choose where you would like to install the product. You don't really even need to install it to a poser runtime directory if you don't wish too. There is also an option to install or not install the 'Right Hemisphere' information by ticking or unticking the relevant checkbox. I think for future installers it might be of advantage to the user to choose if they would or would not like to have the readme and license installed to the programs menu. The problem that you are having with your poser trying to find the textures is caused by not using the browse funtion in the installer which would have given you the option to install the product to the correct location. The metacreations/Curiouslabs different paths actually make no difference to how poser files work. Once they are inside the 'Runtime' directory Poser will take care of the rest including finding textures. The browse function has been included in the installer specifically because there are at least 3 different installation paths in Poser4 versions. We chose to use Poser 4.03 installation path as it is the most recent. To the best of my knowledge the browse function is pretty much standard in most installers on the Windows platform. It may be of advantage for us to offer a simple Zip download as well as the installer. We opted not to use the add/remove due to problems that other companies have had with it removing there entire Poser installation. I think it is pretty much standard practice among most of the other community stores not to use add/remove. Thank you all for your feedback. It certainly helps us set up future installers to what the user needs and doesn't need.
I redirect all the exe files I install as well. I have a folder named Poser files on my desktop (also have one on my other drive) and stick everything in there. It is possible to point an exe wherever you want it to go. I'll continue to make exe's for all my products. I now give the option to install for Pro Pack or Poser 4 so I think the extra bonus of usability is worth having a few less customers. Syyd & Colm, on ya guys ;) I'm downloading it now s
"It may be of advantage for us to offer a simple Zip download as well as the installer." That would probably solve this particular issue but every one solved is the door to another. Whatever the outcome, eventual though it may be, thank you for this wonderful item, which is quite lovely, to say the least. In either eventuality, however, best of luck to you and look for a man with a smoking credit card in the very near future. Larry F
All better now.
I got it deleted and re-installed, paying better attention this time (I'm used to just breezing through the daz installers.)
I guess this will all help you streamline things, because there are people out there even more stupid than I.
Thanks for the Programs Menu tip Guslaw.. I have been digging through explore to delete that, because I thought your method would remove all the files, not just the program listing.
A possible solution to the readme and license files problem would be to put the .exe in a zip file along with them.
I rendered your room in Cinema4D. The lights didn't come through.. but there's better light control in Cinema anyway. I put a couple behind the screens. ( I tried to add transparency but got poor results, they don't seem to need it anyway.)
The floor didn't export either, for some reason? I created a new one and added your texture. I also created a bump map for it.
When I use the scene, I'll make sure to give you a link.
Thanks again Colm and Syyd!
Wow nice render Welcomesite, Im glad to see you that resolved everything and took the time to take a look at it and even do a render! The floor is a ground plane in poser with the texture on it, and the lights are part of poser as well. Thanks everybody for comments, suggestions and tips, we appreciate your efforts. Syyd And Colm
OK, some feedback: Well, I had some trouble with the installers (I bought the leathers for Mike too--very snazzy). One of them created a new folder called Runtime instead of putting it in the folder I browsed to (had to rebrowse to Metacreations instead of Curious Labs). The other kept trying to make a Runtime/Runtime folder after browsing and I had to manually type the directory name in. Sorry, I don't remember which did which. If I had the option of a zip or exe, I probably would choose the zip because its just as easy for me. On the general installer thing and directory structure, I do like having control over directory names because its the only way I can remember where things are. For instance, I have Clothes- Dork, Clothes- Vicki, etc. directories for textures, with subs for different kinds of clothes. If I followed all the "recommended" directories, I'd have clothing textures spread out all over the place under mysterious "somebody's name that doesn't tell me what's in there" directories. For my sanity, I have to organize. Same for poses, etc. I'd have 500 menu items, many with one or two things in them, if I didn't organize them by what they are and not who made them. Now for pz3 files, I don't keep those in my Poser directory at all. I keep them in a My Documents folder because I don't want clutter up the Program Files directory with content any more than Poser already does (content shouldn't be in a program folder anyway). So for those, I'd definitely prefer a zip because then I can send the PZ3 where I want it, and move any textures into my regular Poser textures directory where Poser will find them on its own (and if it doesn't, telling Poser where to find a texture only has to be done once so no big deal). Icons on my desktop? Ummm...don't like that, but I can delete them easy enough. No offense, but the new start menu folder doesn't seem necessary. In any event, both were a surprise. Installers usually ask you where you would like the new start menu folder so you know one's coming and where it will be. I don't know what your exe packager is like, but if you could make checkbox choices "add icons to desktop?" "create start menu folder?" "view read me on exit?" that would be nice. In any event, it really doesn't bother me too much to move stuff around, or extract them where I want them from a zip especially when it was free in the first place. Heck, it was free. But with the Mat poses, well I've got to keep the textures where they expect to find them or they won't work anymore right? So that kinda sucks, and as I collect more of them I'm going to have directory bloat that will make it harder to mix and match stuff on my own. Now that there is a MAT editor available, I may take a stab at moving those too. PS: Just wanted to say thanks for the little adjustment options to refit Mike's leathers for best look with and without boots, and to eliminate potential poke through without making body parts invisible. Makes life easier!

Hope the headache is gone? Business can be a bitch. Here we are giving you a hard time over FREE stuff. I tried another render too. I didn't want to slow the thread up anymore, so the link will display it.Hey Welcomesite, thanks its gone finally. I should have known it was coming the day before because I was getting dizzy spells, which is usually a sign that a migraine is coming. By last night though, I wished I would have paid attention because it was one of the worst I've had in a long time. If I moved my body a half inch in either direction, I got ALOT of pain. Love the render btw, I have to find SOME time today to get a render done I've had in mind and seeing yours is giving me some inspiration to do so. Thanks, Syyd
Ha Well, Flash isn't always bells and whistles. Sometimes it can be used for subtle things. In this case it's just being used to display a 900kb .png image at 80kb and also to stretch the image to fill your browser window, without a border (at 1024x768, anyway). I also just converted the entire image into a hyperlink that takes you to runtimedna.com. It might be possible to do those things another way.. but for me, it's easier to do them with Flash. Hey Syyd, I thought I might learn more about my new Cinema4D software by seeing what different people can do with the same scene. I suggested using your scene for this, in the Cinema forum. I hope you don't mind?
Even the position paper from the PNG development team was quick to point out that it isn't supposed to replace JPEG compression. Unless you were planning to offset print that image, a 60% lossy JPEG is usually indistinguishable from the original, even with superimposed text, even when zoomed 200%. Shame the browsers haven't adopted the JPEG2000 standard; it compresses smaller, its replacement for the standard progressive format would allow you to use the same file for the image AND its thumbnail (the thumbnail load gets just enough data for the thumb) at whatever reduction you like, ANDDD... artifacting is virtually unheard of due to its zig-zag diagonal image sampling.
Though I'm not wild about exe installers, I don't install anything from an exe directly into my Poser program ever. I make a directory folder in my Downloads folder for it and open the exe to that folder then hand place the stuff into my Poser program and I want. I do it with DAZ stuff and other exe. Exe installers might be great for those that are new and are not familiar with the file structure within Poser (believe me, I know, I'm teaching Poser to a friend through ICQ.) But I've come up with my own system of file placement into Poser over the last two years. Okay, so it's a bit tedious to do it the way I do, but call me paranoid, I just don't install directly into Poser. I much prefer zip files or even sit since I have Aladdin Expander. I'm not wild about winrar files either, though I went and got the program to open some of sergemarks stuff. Syyd, glad to see the new site. I cruised by there and uploaded a pic. See yah! The moral, I think, is don't try and monkey with other people's computer setup. How people organise their desktop, start menu, etc is their business. I once bought a program that not only put an icon to the company's web site on the desktop, but it put it back everytime the program ran after I deleted it! I never had anything to do with that company again.
Personally I don't care how it comes packaged as long as the person who made it knows where everything should go and it works like it should. Anything that someone feels is good enough to be posted should be judged on the content and not the packaging. I'm always grateful when I find something really beautiful like this to download for free. So Syyd Thank you very much :-)
I think it's great that this incident has taught many of us that we can extract self-installers to a blank folder of our choice.. and then treat the files as we would any zip. We've also learned easy ways to delete the program entries we don't like ( still best to remove the entire program first, if that is your intention) This knowledge will serve us well in the future, with other software. Armed with this information, the issue of 'zip vs. self-extractor' is less significant, because we can now easily manipulate the situation, instead of the other way around. Thanks all
Hi, that is a nice gift (and handsomely done), but we Mac users can't use self-extracting .exe files, nor do we want them. Zips are smaller, and we all can choose where to put things. A readme file indicating optimal locations as well as license, etc. is helpful. I choose what goes on my desktop, since that is usually my workspace. One of the things I most despise about Microsoft is the clutter. Microsoft thinks we are all stupid and tries to make decisions for us. Unfortunately, you are getting some of the fallout for duplicating their practices. Carolly
We appreciate free stuff. Who doesn't? But too often it seems that someone's generosity allegedly puts them above all constructive criticism, and the "consumer" allegedly has no right to make any comments concerning the useability of the product, its installation, etc. I don't understand the "exe" installers enough to be reassured that they are not somehow messing up my system, my Poser Installation. I never seem to know where all that stuff goes, even if they do show some readme file at the end. Here, we are talking about a prop, a room. This is something that goes along with hundreds of other elements in our Poser installations. I can't help wonder what made Sydd feel this free prop merited such an intrusive installation. Many of us had learned that it's best to cut down the icon clutter on our desktops. Windows XP starts out with only the recycle bin on that desktop...and yes eventually your software starts adding those desktop icons again. Then you need to start dumping them again. Sydd, please redo your product. Make it the good old zip file that most of us know and have learned to handle. Let us put the elements where we want.

Attached is a render for Runtime DNA's very first free item, called "A Room With A View", its a .pz3 that includes an Oriental Screen, three vases, a table, and a tatami floor, all textures are included. We hope you like it, and enjoy rendering. Thank you everyone for your kindnesses, support and well wishes! Syyd of Runtime DNA www.runtimedna.com
