Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 11 12:18 am)
My Mac (400 Mhz G3, 256 Mb mem) can seldom open Vickie II, so I'd say 10 Mb is too big for it. That is with the memory settings per Curious Labs (you can/must do that on a Mac) However, my (finally up) PC does a lot better, I just saved 12 Vickies as a test, 251 Mb pz3, it opened too - do I win? ;-) (Took a while, but I suspect I could do more) That is on 768 MMB or ram, W2000, incidently.

out of curiosity, do you guys have the size of the cr2 that dina ships with? I'd imagine that gal has a pretty impressive set... of numbers...(get your mind out of the gutter!) jim, would you ever actually use a file as big as you made there or was that just to see if you could do it? the reason I ask is because while making this program I need a reasonable range of file size expectation. To aid in editing, automation of verifying links within files, automation of full packaging for distribution of poser files, search/replace capabilities..etc are pretty much driven by file size in many ways. I currenly have it set up for a person to determine what they consider "large" for their computer. 5- 30 megs...this would allow you to open a file from 100 - 600 megs (theoretically) if you have the machine power to do it. However, I doubt anyone would ever be able to open a 600 meg text file and actually do any editing with any cr2 editor. I have tested the 65 meg file and it opens, checks links, does search/replace neatly. for the rest of you, the larger file size you state, is that an oddity? would you ever try to distribute anything that large? (perhaps on cd) thanx BT
I don't know about average (and I don't feel like calculating it), but I have quite a number of pz3 files in the 30-40MB range, my largest is 56MB. The 30-40's are scenes with 2-3 (clothed) characters and a variety of props--your basic "room with people in it" kind of thing. So, I'd say that will be a very common range for me, with the note that Michael 2 will surely result in larger file sizes.
ProPack is acting up on me just now and will have to reinstall, actually will remove all -- a pain I know - and start from ground up but I have somethings around these: pz3s in the 48-60 range for sure. cr2ss in the 25-30 range as well. And I know I have at least one 28MB object or figure with a googob of stuff on it. I have 512 MB ram on a p3. Had a gig but took out half to make a machine for my wife. Running 98. Questions: WOULD 2000 and/or XP take up less system resources and (thus?) allow more figures to be loaded and easier/quicker too, as I seem to have glommed from somewhere around here recently? Thanks.

tis my understanding that xp and 2000 eat more resources than any previous windows versions... however, the side bar is that they are much more stable. its a tradeoff..and would depend on if you actually have stability issues. I dont use 98 cause I couldnt get Bryce to run on it with very large files no matter what I did...with ME, I can open anything. at any rate, even tho people down them...ramboosters (ram free-ers, not ram compressors) are a gift to 3d artists. 3d eats ram and doesnt release it unless you make it release. The only company I have seen that actually builds a reclaim ram script into their product is the makers of z-brush. jim opened that big number of models on a windowz system easier because windows manages its swap file differently that the mac...however, Im sure that one could mess with the setting on the mac and get the same thing to open. *shrug* btw, a sneak peek at the program is at: http://www.brycetech.com/stufftodelete/help.html it will reduce a lot of work for people who distribute models/textures (either for free or for sale) by reducing the actual time spent in getting the items store ready and also allow for increased flexibility by allowing a person to create a "made to order" cd or such...and it does reclaim ram (to an extent) It scanned (opened, checked for links, closed) over 1 gig of files (~1500 individual cr2/obj/hr2/pp2/pz2/pz3) in one run and it didnt fail or cause me to reboot when it finished. sorry mac folks, its windoze only :( BTBit late in the day to come in on this one, but I have one pz3 file that is 124mb, and it reopens and renders , but am struggling with another that is not finished yet and is already 140mb. I think I will have to do it in two layers

BT- it was just for a test, but after seeing how well it worked I'd say 200 Mb PZ3s are pratical, especially on newer PCs. Poser doesn't have a file merge function like other programs, so only way you can do mutiple figures is have them each in a "temp" CR2 and load them one after the other, or a jolly big PZ3. Incidently, my final test was 470 Mb, took about 4 minutes to save/load, 15 to render. My system was using virtual memory at this point It does look like the Rockettes, though! ;-)

thanx for all the great input on the size of your poser directory and os. fyi-- average for around 78 usable data entries~ 3.8 gigs most used os---win98 least used---tie for winNT and win95 largest---27.7 gigs smallest---.35 megs I now need to know your largest single file this includes any file that poser opens and that you use pz3, obj, cr2..anything. my largest is a 65 meg pz3 file. thanx again!
