Subject: For the modelers out there...my problem

DonnyD ( ) posted Thu, 07 February 2002 at 12:03 PM · edited Wed, 12 February 2025 at 4:45 AM

Hi,   First, I am a newbie in modeling.    I have been trying to model an extrememly simple item in Ray Dream 5.5 for use in Poser. But when I import it, some of the faces appear to be missing - just on one side. I am doing a Free Form model. Basically draw the profile and extrude it in one direction. It looks perfectly fine in Ray Dream. I have tried making all normals consistent. I have loaded the model in UVMapper and tried the various fixes there with no luck. Any Ideas?

Sounds like you might have the same problem I had, I got the excellent advice to download Objaction Twoface 4.0 from the free section. There might be facets lacking. g You can read more about this in the "Table cloth" thread from yesterday, - and do a search for Twoface 4.0 in free stuff. :) Hope this helps, and good luck Britt

I tried Two-Face as well...still is broke. I have had this happen and sometimes it doesn't happen. If I use the preset shapes, it always seems to work fine. When I draw the shape with the pen tool (or try to import a Windows Metafile created in PaintShop Pro...heh good luck) it seems to not work... DonnyD

The FFM in Raydream doesn't weld every single vertice a lot of the time. So you'll end up with this problem in Poser. Give this a try: 1.)export the model from RayDream as a .Dxf file 2.)import the .Dxf file back into RayDream 3.)export it as an .obj file It's been a very long time since I've use the FFM. But I think this will fix the problem. ScottA

-or-

You can (in RDS)...
"select" the object [in RDS main window}
[menu] "edit" ----> "copy"

-now-
open the mesh modeler and
[menu] "paste"

Now you should have your item available with all the polys accessible for modification. (like reversing the "normals" for the polys that refuse to show up in Poser)

cheers,

render the model in poser, sometimes, the faces of an imported model dont show in screen mode, but whe you render it , the faces render perfectly.

I have the same problem with invisible polys on about 1/3 of the items I import into poser - especially the larger ones. Sometimes converting from OBJ to DXF or another format & back before importing seems to help. Sometimes flipping normals using the grouping tool inside poser helps. Sometimes nothing helps. I've even had the problem with some of the Poser-ready 3D Meshes I've purchased here & there. Just about all of them will render pretty decently, but I spend more time in texture shaded mode & I'd love to see things as WYSIWYG prior to rendering.

Boy, Im late for this party! Ive had the same problem myself. In my case the problem was the files I created had some faces with normals looking in and some looking out. I solved it by saving as an OBJ and loading into Anim8or (a free program). Selecting the faces in this is the key as those that look one way are yellow and the opposite way are blue. It is then a matter of flipping the normals. (Hey, and you pal!) Even some pros get this wrong but luckily Poser is very easy to export from so I have solved most of them myself. May not help but I thought I`d mention it B)

Well, I want to thank everyone's help with this so far. I tried something from dr. geep - I used the mesh form modeler and used polyfill to try it out. It fixes the problem with the middle stage - mostly. But when I work with removing segments with 3d boolean, a face or two is disappearing (nowhere near the cuts)... at this point, I am wondering if anyone has used a modeler with zero problems importing into poser? Nope! That's never happened to me. ;==]

ok...I have it fixed... The order I boolean removed the segments from the free form seemed to do the trick. I don't know why. But that and then mesh form polyfilling and then 2facing it worked. My head hurts. :) DonnyD

Allright!!! ;=] DonnyD, I have had that problem, also. Sometimes, an easy fix is: In the MM in RDS, use the "Reference" view [i.e, "ctrl+0"] Now, select the entire mesh ... -and- [menu] "Selection" ----> "Empty polygon" -and then- with the mesh still selected ... [menu] "Selection" ----> "Fill polygon" ... exit the MM and "save" your object. In RDS, using the "duplicate" or "copy" --> "paste" commands sometimes causes the "normals" to wind up being reversed. cheers, dr geep <---------------------------------------------------------(never any "normals" here) ;=]
