that's the im i got this morning. though i liked total hair, i don't like being im'ed like this. there's more than enough adverts around here recently, so this is totaly unnecessery and even contraproductive.

leather-guy ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 2:53 AM

Don't see the problem. IM him back that you don't like it & it won't happen again. Or IM the store admin, & they'll pass the word. No one wants you upset with them.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 8:10 AM

Don't see a problem either. It's made clear when you buy something in the store that the merchant gets your Username and can contact you when Updates available or anything related to the item you bought. Before posting this in a public forum I would have talked to the merchant privatley first.

well as you can see, it didn't came from harvey, but from an "???" user. so i couldn't contact him, even though i tried. it seems that some vendors turned off that function, it's the second time i tried and not succeed. "...merchant gets your Username and can contact you when Updates available or anything related to the item you bought." that's fine as long as it goes for updates, but "anything related" is a rather wide definition. since i bought vicky, should i get privat ims from anyone that made anything for her? if he would give those new textures free or for lowered prices for his customers, ok, but it's blatant direct advertising that's even forbidden in some countries. it's not the first time i've been contacted like this, and that's why i went this time public, and contacted admins. i hope it will have some effect.

With anything related I thought of items that are from the same merchant and/or an additon to the original product (in this case new textures and Matpose files). I would see this as something positve - but that's my opinion. As far as I understood you will only get IMs from those vendors that sold something to you. What I don't understand is the fact that you could not send an answer. I think if I send an IM to someone I should give this person the possibilty to answer the same way and not turn off this function.

As far as I've understood, vendors aren't allowed to use the "IM purchasers" or "email purchasers" function for advertising, which this thing in my opinion is. It's one thing to let people know there is a free update or a freebie related to the product but imho this is just advertising. Just my two cents.

Here's the policy on e-mail & IMs to customers, from the store staff. It's pretty strongly worded: "Note: This form is only for use in technical support of your items and in special promotional gift offers to past customers to encourage repeat business in the sales or marketing of your new products. If you abuse this feature, it will be taken away from you. A copy of this email will be sent to admin@renderosity.com. "Special Promotional Offers: Free things, such as an extra textures, small free props, extra morph targets, other tangible goods that you are offering your past customers at no charge as an act of appreciation if they purchase your new products. (If you need help in planning how to best promote your product please contact store@renderosity.com with your questions.) "Technical Support: The act of upgrading, adding features to, fixing, repairing or otherwise making the product your customer has already purchased better and more desirable for him or her. " i got 2 of those IMs from Harvey, LOL! i'm sure he just misunderstood or bleeped over the fine print, here. Also, i expect the reason it comes back to user = ??? is because it was broadcast, not sent one to one. i doubt this will become a problem; 'twas probably just a blip in the continuum. Harvey is a good guy; i wouldn't sweat this one. :^)

I go to great lengths to prevent spam in my EMail box. I hate it. But this wouldn't bother me for a second; one click & it's gone. Plus, nine times out of ten, it's something I'd probably like to know about if it's for something I've bought. I'm contacted by vendors regarding products I've bought 2-8 times a week. Eighty percent of the time it's EMail. 20% IM. I've only gotten 3 of these one-to-many IM "broadcasts". The rest were personal messages. Of all the messages I've recieved from vendors, about 40% were simple courtious "thank you's" with contact info in case of questions or problems, the rest were either info on how to obtain an update, an offer of a free add-on, or an invitation to beta-test something new. Two were notices of another associated product. I don't find any of these objectionable. The marketplace doesn't give out any personal contact info to the vendors except my user-name. The IM's & Emails messages are always sent thru Renderosity. There's an opt-out process to prevent ever getting them. I don't see the problem here.

aleks ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 4:15 PM

you're lucky. although i bought some 40-odd products here, i never got a "thank you" ;) i also never got other messages from vendors nor do i expect some. but, as you say, i go also to some lengths to block the spams. and i consider it spam. you may not. i do.

welcomesite ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 4:34 PM

I consider it spam too. Who are these people who are condoning it? Vendors?

leather-guy ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 4:52 PM

I actually only hear from Vendors from about 20% of my purchases. - But I've made over 300 purchases here ;-). Some I hear from regularly, but I often respond to their messages directly, post comments on products, and so on. Most of them are just very talented members of out Renderosity community, and always eager for input from the folks who buy their work. Some have even made or modified products or free items from my input, so I guess I've grown to enjoy such contact. If you haven't gotten anything before, you've likely indicated in your profile that you don't want fliers, updates, & such. If that's the case you do have a gripe, indeed. Members are entitled to privacy if they request it. I hope you get it resolved.

nfredman ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 4:53 PM

No, actually nobody is condoning "spam," Welcomsite. A few posts above, i copied out the policy from the Store staff, and as you can see, they don't suggest sending IM advertisements, either--in fact, they'll punish merchants who do that. So, be cool, i doubt we'll be seeing more of this. i expect it was a bit of misdirected good will. i know i've almost never gotten any myself--though the ones announcing freebies have been welcome. :^) --Nan who loves Poser goodies, too

LordsWarrior ( ) posted Tue, 19 February 2002 at 6:58 PM

prods Leaherguy 20% of your purchases?? What about me {:O) My policy when someone buys one of my products is. I send an IM to the purchaser saying.. "Thank you..this is my website..I have an OPTIONAL newsletter I send out with each product realease/update etc. If you want it let me know your email. Thanks again. etc etc" About 95% of my customers have said kool and given me the email addy (which I keep confidential by the way). And its totally optional for them. The store policy is a merchant cannot use the BULK IM/emailer feature to send messages to their customers unless it regards a FREE update or fix to the product they had purchased. Hope this helps -LW

GhostWolf ( ) posted Wed, 20 February 2002 at 1:48 AM

Well, at first I thought the texture pack item was FREE or a discount on that product for those who bought the hair previously. But NOPE!! It's just another stupid ad, so I deleted them and went beck minding my own business. Here's my rule, if it's not regarding FREE update or some big discounts on some related products, it's a SPAM and it will be dealt with accordingly.
