do you know where there are great resources for fractals? if you do, why not share it? got some cool fractal software? tell us about it!

well, i'll start out...

first off, programs...i use:

kai's power tools
fractint
ultrafractal
xenodream
tierazon (spelling?)

i know i've got a few more loaded but can't recall off the top of my head.

i am always looking for other fractal programs. you know each has a 'specialty' and i find that for certain types of effects that i am after, i grab different programs.

i am currently looking for more 3d fractal software. i think ideally, software that allows me to export a 3d object into another application, like bryce, as an .obj or .dxf file. does anyone know of such an application?

O boy, I never thought I'd see the light, a Fractal Forum! Yahoo! OK...Now which Version(s?) of Kais Power Tools do Fractals? LOL hey welcome... i feel like a kid on the first day of high school! can't wait to see everyone after summer vacation. what version of kai's do fractals.. i think it's 5... does the 'mandelbrot' type fractals and fractal flame i think. 3 does a wonderful organic pattern/texture thing that i use quite often as well when i am looking for textures like leather or skin. ummm http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=86809 is an ultrafractal fractal... i think a derivative of the spider-type fractals. that was a while back so i'de have to go look http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=139029 and that is xenodream ... wonderful for exploring too so, what programs do you use for your fractals? any suggestions for something to try out?

A month or so a go I had a bout 4 or 5 freeware apps installed.. Then I built a new PC and lost thier use. I'm going to have to do some searching, in the next day or two, and see what I can find. My guess is KPT, Ultra-Fractal, and this Xenodream application will be our bread and butter! Cain~ = )

Mind Boggling Fractals. Easy interface for us that aren't mathematically inclined, and also for those that are.

yea those are the current heavies in my toolkit... but don't discount some of the other less known apps... each has it's own flavor. i love breaking open a new fractal ap... so many fine ones out there made by people for their own enjoyment. that is mucho coolo methinks.

hey judith.. i am going to look at that right now.. thanks everyone for sharing your links. when we get a glob of them, i will compile a 'resource' list that hopefully we can use to identify all the cool stuff out there.

I just posted the new forum on their user list...... told them to get over here and show everyone their stuff :))) I love the program, that and UF are my generators of choice, but I use it for background and textures, even though I'm a great admirer of fractals by themselves ~j~

http://www.tucows.com is returning slews of renderers, especially for Macs! It'd take me a few days, but I'll post the results, I find, of the applications! = )

Thanks for starting this forum Audre, I saw a post of yours on Usenet about it, I think. And thanks to Judith for letting us know in the MBF users group. The link to Paul's website and MBF has already been provided and I'd also like to give a couple of links to the limited freeware version, Mind-Boggling Fractals Lite, http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/54429.shtml, and http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/cfs_update192.html
It will give you a taste for the program and is not crippled to stop working after a time, but it is very limited in the number of rendering methods, equations and has no capability of user defined equations like the full version.

Fractal Explorer has many capabilities that go beyond Tierazon, Sterling, etc., but should be familiar to users because Stephen Ferguson has helped the authors of FE. There is a very good stable beta version for download at http://www.eclectasy.com/Fractal-Explorer/download.htm and there is a beta 11 version out, that will be released soon, that has image layering and manipulation capabilities. The authors are working to include many popular features of other programs like Ultra Fractal. It also handles 4D, IFS and landscape imagery.

Probably the single most important resource that has evolved from the original sci.fractals Usenet newsgroup is the Fractal Art FAQ, developed by Jean-Pierre Louvet and Juan Luis Martinez; http://fractals.iuta.u-bordeaux.fr/f-art-faq/ It contains many links and links to the usual exhaustive resources for fractals. Also the FAQ can be downloaded to your hard drive and a desktop link to the index HTML allows you to use it whenever you want, as well as have direct links when on line.

You can find utility after utility there, I do'nt think there is a type of applicatio out there that does'nt have Free and Shareware Brothers and Sisters at tucows.com, look there for most everything! = )

Anyone know where to get the versions of KPT that include fractal generation as a plugin for Photoshop? I'm thinking ver 2 and ver 5 had those included. Looking for a source to download them or purchase them.

Corel,see link, now sells KPT5 and includes all the fractal capabilities as well as filters from KPT3. They have a new set of filters called KPT Effects that is farmed out to a company called Procreate, procreate.com. It includes FraxFlameII, as well as others. I read a review that suggested passing on it as FraxFlame is still just as good and the other effects can be created with the other KPT filters, etc. I don't know first hand, but I do know KPT5 is a lot to use, and have fun with, in and of itself. what a great list. thank you everyone for contributing. i will be collecting all this information to put it into the fractal forum's BACK ROOM... a website that will hopefully make all this great information easy to find and access. it may take us a bit to get the back room going though, we have a few other things in the queue before us. but it is coming! thanks again and definitely keep posting!

I once tried the cyberwizards.com/~hub/fractal and looked into some jt formulas - but they did not work!! And the emp.* files were totally outdated. I hope these resources are better now.

Actually I do know of such a program.  It's called "Crossroads" and I just recently used it to change a .dxf object to an .obj object so that I could work on that object in Wings3d
