Subject: Traditional Japanese furniture Needed

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2000 at 11:43 PM · edited Fri, 02 August 2024 at 11:10 PM

Does anyone know where I can get some meshes of traditional Japanese furniture. I need them for a scene I wish to put together with the Miroku character. I had a hard time tracking down a picture on the Net of a traditional wall hanging picture, but finally found a couple I can use. I really need the furniture.

I thought traditional Japanese furniture were pillows on the floor, and low legged tables... Hmmmm My husband spent time in Japan a few times and that's what he said... I lived in Hawaii too with lots of Japanese influence... Can't you just take a large square table and lower it's legs into the ground and throw some pillows on the floor? Preferably Anson's posable pillow at the Prop's Guild?... I don't know, just thinking here.. Anyway, forgive me if I'm wrong to whoever is Japanese on the forum for I know not what I say .. lol Have you tried 3D Cafe? .. If you could throw up a photo of the kind of furniture your looking for, we might see something we've seen in 3D before and be able to direct you to the right places... I think the time period is of essence too... ~Cindy

Don't have any URLs, that's what I'm looking for!

What about a scanned picture? hmmmm

I agree with Cindy. How hard could low furniture be? I'd be willing to model a thing or two for the practice. jje

Dreamspinner: I know the kinds of pics you need. I will TRY to make some furnature for you this week - REMIND ME! I have a wonderful set in minature and will use that as the template. I just have to remember how to make it into a real poser prop now....

Hit Poser World and then go to "Models". Steve put a black pot up there that would be found in various sizes in just about every room either for boiling water for tea or in a larger size for soup. I am working on properly sized mats and wall panels, a table and small stand for displaying flowers. I think there are cabnets avalible, but I have to check my library at home.

I have a set of walls I can post later, they are the paper and wood sort walls, complete with a sliding door :) Rena has my teaset at Fairy woods too, the tray could be scaled up to make a low table. -Trav

Great! Now all we need are the tatami (floor mats). I should have something up later tonight.

Traveler, please post the walls--Shoji. I would really like them myself. Ikyoto, would you consider posting these for everyone? Diane B

Traveler ( ) posted Mon, 24 January 2000 at 12:42 PM

Yep, I will post the set to the freestuff. I found a washing bowl and natural sponge set I made too, will post them as well. -Trav

You got it. I didn't know there was that much interest in set dressing ala Nihon-no. But now that two fo my favorite people (Dreamspinner and Dinae... not you Trav - you're just too damn hairy. Sorry) are asking I'll actually do some of it.

picnic ( ) posted Mon, 24 January 2000 at 12:55 PM

Thanks. I'll be anxious to see Dreamspinner's image. I've had a "Japanese' image in my mind since the first tea set Traveler made. I have an interest in Japanese culture and art since some of my textile work is based on traditional Japanese dye techniques (ikat and shibori) and I have a very good friend who is a wonderful raku potter--and much of her work, though very contemporary, also has a very eastern spare feel to it. Many of my potter friends are greatly influenced by Japanese clay work also--and some have studied there. Actually have several Japanese artist friends, too, working in other mediums. So--thanks to both of you. Diane B

I own several antique chests (tansu)It should not be difficult to photograph them and make props. Japanese tansu are mostly rectangular and it should be pretty easy to simply make a texture for a cube. and I have a poser shoji screen somewhere. I am working on an idea graphic novel set in medival japan and can use a lot such stuff myself. (and I really have to finish up my posable kimono too as well as samurai arumor... oh and my day job while I am at it....) "phil" Hokusai

Hokusai, I am trying to make sode and have enough real chainmaille to scan for texturing the kote. What kind of armour? Simple haramaki should be good enough.

If you'd like to email me I have about 2 dozen antique Chinese/Tibetan rugs scanned that I've been using as tex/bum maps applied to a one sided square. They work well either as area rugs or wall hangings/panels. All are fairly large files (400-600K zipped), but I can send you contact sheets so you can pick & choose
