Subject: Need high poly model or way to *increase* polycount.

Micheleh ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 5:00 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 6:56 PM

I know, that's the opposite of what most people want. I'm wierd that way. ;] Ronmolina mentioned in another thread that the "Dina" charachter is rather hi-poly. Here's my problem. I want polys- the more polys, the better. I've tried to export Vicky (I may have v1, not v2) as an .obj file, and the polygons end up being very evident. Since I haven't found a way to increase the polycount on an exported poser file, could anyone tell me which charachters are the highest polycount? Thanks!

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 5:07 PM

If you have a modeller program (I think there's a version of Amapi that's still free; you can go peek in their forum), you can use the "smooth" function to increase the polygon count. The free Amapi can't use OBJ files, but you can export in a different format to use in there.

Micheleh ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 5:47 PM

The modeler I'm using doesn't have a "smooth" function. I either need a way to do that before importing, or just a very high poly model to start with. (Or a way to export the model with high polys?)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 6:23 PM

Maybe if you import it into UV mapper and Split the verticies that will increase polygon count...it works with all other models of ours...Sharen

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 6:23 PM

Of course I don't know what it will do to the model...make sure you make a backup copy if you do this though. Sharen

Micheleh ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 6:34 PM

Hmm! I'll have to try that. Thanks!

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 8:13 PM

OK, I'll bite. WHY? do you want high poly models of pre-existing functional models.? ~EA

jamball77 ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 8:46 PM

What kinda model, there is a hirez female model for sale with what is her name....? Dina Dinah something like that. After you've finished up-rezing the model... You'll be faced with creating all your own Morph Targets You'll have to rig the model again. my 2 cents: Simply increasing the poly count willy-nilly will hardly amount to much. You'll probably see more profound results with a better texture map. Be sure you are anti-ailiasing the rendered image. I'm using Vicky 2 in Lightwave and she looks very very well real. You're probably not likeing what you see because Poser is well a great Poser and not a great rendering program. It doesn't even have ray tracing (invented long long ago).

Here's a render of her rear end which has the most problem, IMHO. No texture, no bump. Next is a front facial view.

Rendered in Lightwave 6.5 Enhanced Anti-aliasing and DOF. Imagine how good she'll look with CLOTHES :)

By the way the above are just the native geometry. The next two are in subpatch mode. Something High-end modelers have to make it appear as though there is more geometry. Each of the polys are in 9X9 subpatch which gives an apparent increase of 81 times. But without a great increase (maybe 4X the render length) in render time.

"I like big butts and I cannot lie, you other brothers can't deny..." Sorry, couldn't resist :) On a more serious note, what program are you wanting to use these models in?

and finally the offensive BLOCKY tush. good luck. By the way Lightwave is now just $395 for students and there has been a huge price drop for others info at newtek.com or sharbor.com

jamball77 ( ) posted Wed, 24 April 2002 at 10:16 PM

I just chose these parts of the model because they can look bad in renders. Doesn't have to be that way. I call this the outhouse pose. Not really... :) It's a stock pose that comes with SteffyZZ's ASIA. Featured above.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 12:37 AM

I suppose I don't need the polys increased as much as smoothed. I'm rendering an example of the problem I'm having, it'll be done in a mo'. I'll show you then.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 1:36 AM

file_5727.JPG

OK, here it is. The model is Enzio by DigiCalimero, the best model I've ever seen yet, charachter wise. I didn't feel like messing with the textures, so I made him a statue. See the polys? I exported from Poser as an OBJ file, imported into Moray, and rendered with POV.

DTHUREGRIF ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 1:57 AM

Micheleh, At this time, Dina V and Vina D are the highest poly count models that I know of for Poser, but they are both female. They would solve that poly problem you're having though. :-) We do plan to do a male with a similar poly count, but there's no ETA on him yet.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 2:07 AM

Thanks, DTUREGRIF, but are you sure of that or just guessing? I had the same problem with Vicky. Have you used Moray? If it's a "yes, for sure, I know this works", then sign me up, I want it. ;] I think, after reading these posts above, that it must be a smoothing problem, but I can't find a single utility to smooth a mesh.

Well, I haven't used the program you are so I can't say positively, but here's a comparison of the meshes between Posette, Vicki and Dina (Vina's mesh in the same poly count).

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 2:49 AM

Sigh It looks good, and I'm sure it's a great model. Unfortunately, it won't help me. I have an idea for a series of images, but the only charachter I've found so far that I can use is Enzio. Why? He looks like a regular old guy. I need "real people" charachters- I don't mean slightly imperfect, lol- I mean ones that look like me, or my friends. Ordinary.

You don't need a high poly count, you need an option to smooth an existing mesh. There are many options to convert a obj to PovRay format, for example different converters and different mesh formats. Some of them have a smooth option. There are also some utilities available (see link). If that is not enough try a google search with the keywords 'povray', 'mesh' and 'smooth'.

Some time ago I got some good smooth renders from Povray, but now I use Cinema 4D and don't know which mesh formats or converters are best for the current PovRay version.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 3:58 AM

I bookmarked that to study. Cool. What I want, though, is to smooth an obj file and leave it as an obj file to import into Moray. (Maybe in my next lifetime I'll have time to learn POV. Personally, I think any text editing based system needs to get with the program, lol. Give me a GUI or forget it!)

Blackhearted ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 6:19 AM

i have no idea on how to smooth characters in an program but max, so i cant help ya there. artistically speaking, he is a great character though - love the face and hat/glasses. he does look like an ordinary joe :) although, he is a little built for an old man, heh. he needs a much larger belly and smaller shoulders ;) too bad the mike clothing pack has no body morphs included, and theres virtually no way to make mikes shoulders smaller. cheers, -gabriel

I think that PoseRay can do the stunt. It converts a Poser OBJ-File into POVRays format and makes an UDO-File for moray too. The models are smoothed then. Just follow the link to get an actual version.

If youre not worried about keeping the Poser materials settings intact you could try "Anim8or" which imports Poser geometry OBJs, and has a smoothing function which doubles the mesh when doing so. I have used it sucessfully on some famous hair Props, including the associated morphs, which re-applied perfectly. Its only foible is sometimes you have to open the OBJ in UVmapper first and save the OBJ out before Anim8or will read it. Dunno why but it works. Anim8or is free, but Im not telling you where to find it. A Hint? www.Anim8or.com is a good starting point B)

Jim Burton ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 10:51 AM

Bryce also has a smooth function, and it is adjustable and selectable, unlike Poser. Rendering is pretty good too, only rather slow. Even with Dina you are going to need smoothing.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 1:43 PM

I tried Anim8oronce- I crashed it. ;] I have Poseay, I like it. I do not want to convert to POV, though. I hate dealing with native pov. I need to "see" what I'm doing. As for bryce- I can't spend that kind of money for one task- I wish I could! Hi, Gabriel! Isn't eh a wonderful charachter? I wrote Mychelle, the other creator, and asked if they could do more like that- he needs an old lady! What I could do about the shoulders is to increase everything else exponentially to make the shoulders look smaller by comparison, and scale down slightly- thanks for the idea. Still need to smooth the bloody thing! ;]

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 3:39 PM

OK..duh! Just use the sub-divide python script. Do it before export, and you'll have many polys. It's in the python library of Poser. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. (Something is wrong with my keyboard, keeps spelling words wrong...really :) ~EA

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 25 April 2002 at 4:09 PM

Great! Um... how do I do that? I've never done a script. Truth be told, the figure above is the third time I've ever tried to pose anything.

bantha ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 6:31 AM

I still think you should use PoseRay. It creates an UDO-File so you CAN see the object in Moray. You don't have to fiddle with POVRay - Stuff. Just load the UDO-File ointo Povray. Without smothing you will need immense amounts of vertices to get your model smooth. I would think you would have to raise the polys by 100 to get s smooth model without smoothing the normals. If you do not have LOTS of ram, the render will take incredibly long.

Yup, Id do that too. After working with the sub-divide tool to better give you an explanation, it really ain't all to great. If you can smooth in Moray, than use PoseRay. ~EA

Micheleh ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 11:43 AM

So Poseray can convert to UDO? I didn't know that! Will it retain the texture info, do you know? I guess my system's good- 1G ddr w/Athlon 2K and a G3. Thank you everyone, btw. People are so nice here! 8]

bantha ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 11:55 AM

Poseray produces UDO-Files as well. UDO is just a file for Moray, POVRay uses the converted Povray - Source. Moray in it's actual Version does AFAIK not the new 3.5 Beta, but if you have MegaPOV it could work. POVRay <3.5 does not support UV-Mapping, so you cannot use normal Textures. But MegaPOV and POV 3.5 can do this. Since I never bought Moray, I have not much experience what can be done with it. I tested it a while ago, and i managed to get some renders done, but I did some changes in the sourcefile too. But the converter I used was much inferior to the actual Poseray-Version. I would give it a try.

I have POV 3.5 latest beta. (And mega, and molecular, and Quaternion...) I started with Moray- my first CG program. I guess that's why I love it. I'm hooked on the interface. I'll try Poseray. I bought it once, but lost it in a crash- I'll have to get it again.
