Hi this is my first time here so I wanted to say hello. This site seems pretty cool. This is one of the better photos of me so I thought I would get your opinion. This took me a few tries until I was satisfied. ANd still I think something is missing, what do you guys think?

Unconventional. Somewhat mysterious. Welcome to the Forum, Aster.

Aster ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 11:19 PM

Good oer bad? Is it missing something? Unconventional? I don't understand.

Misha883 ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 11:53 PM

Good and bad are slippery concepts. It is an intriguing image, with subject (you) placed in empty hallway, but fleetingly, as if distracted by something outside the frame. You are correct, it does not seem to stand on its own. I'd imagine it as a series of three or five images, mounted together, like clips from a movie. Good enough anyway to want to see more.

Hi Aster,
one thing that stands out to me when i look at it is "you" are out of focus a bit but no action is implied. Kinda' anti-climatic, as if seconds later you leaped from your chair in response to something happening out of frame... As Misha says it doesn't seem to stand on it's own but works great as a flimstrip. Great film noir lighting drawing the eye down the empty hallway. I love B/W photos.
Hope to see more.

Hi Aster. I really like the light & focus of the hall, that has a nice feel to it. I think the problem is with the way you fit into the picture, the focus on you does suggest some movement but your position suggests to me leaning on the wall staring off at something. I think with more of you in the picture would have worked better. Not a question of good or bad, I think it's just about the effect your looking for.

Welcome, and I like this shot because of your unselfconsciousness;
you seem to not notice the camera at all. In most
self-portraits the subject usually appears quite
aware of the camera. It's not easy to forget about the
camera, especially when you're the one operating it. I
would never have thought that it was a self-portrait if you
hadn't said so. Nicely done.

As far as what it's missing is concerned, that's hard to
say. What do you think is missing? What would you add to
the scene if you could choose from anything? It all depends
on what you would like, not what others would like. (And
yeah, composition of a scene is one of the hardest things
to decide on, for me, and I think that's where a large part
of the art in photography lies.)

Welcome Aster. At first glance I like your photo, then I see what you are refering to. THere is something missing. But what I don't know. If anything is added you risk drawing focus away from the subject. I agree with misha Slynky and retrocity. This does seem "Zapruder-esque". But I like how you are blurry. It gives a sense of mystery. It makes me wonder what was happening during the shoot. I like that. Mabye if you were to shoot this again reverseing the DoF and did not cut off your head. And as Slynky said "yer a pretty lil'miss" Can't wait to see more.

Hello Aster.... watch out for slynkster he is a smoov one, lol. everyone else are the sweetest people who will tell you straight. I liked your photo but feel that the face needs to have more focus to it... unless of course you want the focus to go down the hall, then i would place an object at the end of the hall to bring the eye down the floor. as for me... i'm the mean one around here... really mean.... hehe

Thank you all very much for the good and honest advice. I have been experimenting with self portraits lately and have wanted some outside opinions. Now I know where to come. THanks

Hi Aster, and welcome. (hmmm - curious, how come so many cute gals are into photography in here, but in the real world...?..tch....lol) I like this pic, nice style & idea, the only thing I can comment on is the fact that because you and the hallway at the end are both lit you seem to be 'fighting' for attention - 2 focal points that seem to conflict. How's about burnin the doorway area just a touch so you are lighter? That will bring all the focus on yourself. (",) p.s. I concur with Slynky, he IS an a$$.

hey alpha, quit winking at the fresh victim, you'll scare her off, especially if she knew what was winking at her...

PunkClown ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 6:27 AM

Hi Aster, like the others I shall say welcome too, but as usual I'm coming late to the party. I like your self portrait, and I think the long shot of the hall/corridor has a certain mystique, as has your off centre, slightly out of focus, 'pretty miss' look! Perhaps there is something missing, perhaps not. In some ways the left part of the image looks to be part of a different photograph altogether, yet with your inclusion on the right, the whole comes together well for me in a rather off-beat way. As the others have said, it depends on what you are trying to achieve. (Italics because these things can be very subjective) Keep posting more please....BTW ~ Slynky's really an angel in wolf's clothing and Bonbon is an angel in angel's clothing. Everyone here is really rather nice, except for me and I'm very very bad! (grrrrrowl) (oh, and Jordy's a bit bonkers, but really a nice fella too) :-)>

Welcome hotti, ark, I mean Aster. I like that pic of yours. Good gaze control, my eye keeps bounching from you to that hallway and back, and back. Creates funny loose feeling. One major tip for future pics, eyes should be sharp, always. Thats what they say. But, anyway, nice to see you here, in our own special place in the evil world. .n
