This time I'm playing with my new toy, Anything Grows. Thought y'all might enjoy seeing what I've come up with so far.

Can you do a long woman's hairstyle? If so, I'd like to see a render of it.

You can set the strand length to whatever you want. I know this because when I did the eyebrows, I accidently set the length to 400 in. This, coupled with the fact that I had the eyebrows two inches top low resulted in Tammy Faye Baker eyelashes. Heh. I'll try and do a long hair render when I get home tonight. We'll see if can turn my guy into a hippie or something. So far I'm really having fun with this, although I have encountered some weirdnesses: 1. When I was creating the Hair object, by using a copy of the dude and deleting vertices, some times the direction of the hair would reverse, so that they pointed inside his head. Now I seal off the shape (fill in the polygons on the bottom), and that seems to work. 2. If you want to use a shader to control one of the options, the shader has to have existied before the Anything Grows object is created. New shaders don't appear in the drop down list. But if you cut and paste the object, they do, so that's not really a huge deal. Also, it occurs to me I haven't tried the refresh button when I create new shaders, so maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. 3. When creating the Anything Grows primitive, I could not access the very bottom options (like Z Wiggle). This probably has to do with my screen settings; I didn't see a scroll bar, and I couldn't move the option window up. I don't know if these weirdness have to do with me or the software, but I know which way I'd bet, so I'll keep experimenting.

twillis, Let me see if I can address some of the weirdness. 1. Anything Grows uses the surface normal as a starting direction for hair growth. If you see hair growing inside your object, it's probably because the normals got reversed. Closing your object like you did gives Carrara enough information to figure out the right direction for the normals. You can also use the Reverse Polymesh Normals command in the Vertex modeler. The reverse normals commands is a bit flaky though so you may have to play with it to get it to work. I had to do this, select facets, reverse, unselect, reselect, Standard Polymesh Normals, and then it was reversed. 2. You got it, just use the Refresh Master Lists button to have Anything Grows check for new shaders and objects. Unfortunately there was no way to get notified that something new had come along or a good place to automatically refresh so it had to be manual. 3. The smallest resolution I tested on was 1024x768. With that you should have space for the whole AGro Primitive UI. If that's not the case please send me a screen shot and we'll see what we can do. Very nice head, Terri ! About the missing scroll bar problem, if you don't see it then try to press 'space' to have the hand tool and scroll the AGrows window with it . I never had this disapearing scroll bar problem before so i don't know if it will work . Ha, and a little trick to reset normals in case they get messed up : in the VM, select all, cut and paste . I hope it helps :) litst

Thanks, Eric. I assumed most of the problems were on my side; I hope it didn't sound like I was complaining. I can see I'll need to experiment with the reverse normals command, although so far just making sure I use a closed surface seems to work pretty well. It should have occured to me to use the Refresh thing. I was thinking was soley to do with changes made to the Anything Grows settings, and not the whole scene. Actually, I think a manual refresh is fine; an automatic refresh might eat up too many memory resources. I'm probably using a smaller resolution monitor resolution than 1024 x 768; on account I am an old lady with old eyes. Well, middle-aged eyes, anyhow. I'll verify this when I get home. I should also mention that it's possible to get a lot more realistic looking hair than my cartoonish efforts. I'm more interested in cartooning than realism, so I'm using relatively low strand counts (and thick strands). However, you do have the option to do much finer hair, if you have the memory for it. I'll try to post an example of that as well as a long hair example when I get home tonight. My poor dude is gonna be used like one of those Barbie heads we had as kids (well, maybe you guys didn't have one). Eric, another side effect you should probably warn people about is the fact that one winds up with the theme from the musical Hair playing in one's head all day. It's been 4 HOURS of "give me hair... long beautiful hair" over and over and over ALL MORNING LONG.

Thanks, litst. I'll try the space bar trick tonight. I'm still not happy with the eyesockets, so now I'm just trying the "ignore it and maybe the problem will go away approach". He's fun to use with this hair plug-in. I think I'll try beard and mustache next. And Tammy Faye Baker eyelashes. Ch-ch-ch-chia! Ch-ch-ch-chia! (This may only make sense to American readers, I don't know how universal chia pets are).

nyar1ath0tep,

Here's a quick 5 minute hairstyle. It's just slope for the length, and checkers in the Y Wiggle to control the part. You can go much farther that what I did playing with length stiffness, wiggle, and gravity.

twillis,

None of the beta testers told me about the hair musical problem, I'll have to check into that. ;)

If you finish up your head or get the chia pet thing going, please submit it to the user gallery!

Sure, Eric. One Chia-Head coming up. Another cool thing I might have to try is combining Anything Glows with Anything Grows to create one of those fiber optic sculpture thingys.
